Title: Diaper cake anyone? Post by Melissa on Aug 21st, 2006, 3:55pm http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/mfiltz/purplewisteria.jpg ;) JUST KIDDING I learned how to make these today. Each cake has 50 diapers that are a size 1. This cake has silk Wisteria adorning it. I'll (hopefully) be selling them as a balloon option for the hospital's maternity ward. (and I might donate one there from time to time) :)melly |

Title: Re: Diaper cake anyone? Post by Charlotte on Aug 21st, 2006, 4:03pm .No, I don't want a slice, thank you. But it would also be a fantastic centerpiece for a baby shower - the mom could keep the silk flowers. Charlotte |

Title: Re: Diaper cake anyone? Post by Margi on Aug 21st, 2006, 5:19pm That's pretty, Mel. Just be careful and don't let this get away on you. Corinne's friend made one for Savannah's shower and it cost her nearly $300 once all was said and done. Wasn't much bigger than the one you posted but she added all kinds of stuff to it, teddy bears, brush and comb set, gift certificates, etc...it can add up so quickly! She figured it would cost her just under $100 but....yikes! :o The last baby shower I was at, they played this game: http://hleeo.photosite.com/~photos/tn/14631_348.ts1143820273328.jpg It's called "Guess the Diaper Contents". It was real special, let me tell you. They melted different brands of chocolate bars into diapers and then passed it around the circle so everyone could smell (but not taste).... and whoever guessed the most correct number won some stupid prize. Even though we knew it was chocolate, it was still kind of icky. :P LOL Times have sure changed at baby showers!! |

Title: Re: Diaper cake anyone? Post by Melissa on Aug 22nd, 2006, 11:42am Ok, I am going to call them "Over the Hill Incontinence Cakes". How does that sound? I'm going to pick up some, uh, incontinence undergarments from town and the supplies I need from the craft store. I was thinking of having them sent with either a latex or mylar "Over the Hill" balloon or with some other cake "topper". (I'll figure it out eventually) What do ya think? Oh, and thank God for those guards! [smiley=laugh.gif] |

Title: Re: Diaper cake anyone? Post by Melissa on Aug 22nd, 2006, 2:51pm Well, there I was, standing in front of the wall of incontinence pads at Walmart and......... I just couldn't do it. :-[ I couldn't think about anything except the people that need to use them, or have to wear diapers cause they have no choice, like my 13 yr. old nephew that has MS and a rare disease. My moral compass got the best of me I guess. :-/ So, I went and bought some travel sized baby stuff to stick in my baby diaper cake instead. Little lotion, baby bath, balmex, powder, wipes & a teddy bear shaped hot/cold pack. I'm going to put my 1st cake on eBay and see if it'll sell. I know there's a ton of them there, but I don't care. *sigh* onward.... |

Title: Re: Diaper cake anyone? Post by Margi on Aug 22nd, 2006, 3:15pm That's a really good point, Mel - good for you for being so sensitive to other's feelings. You're 100% correct, too. I think, honestly, a Depends cake really only would work if you knew the person extremely well and knew that they would be able to take the joke. I think it would be funny to send Don one though. ;) |

My kids gave me depends when I turned 50 & I actually took them back & got something else. Your original idea is a good idea, and I really love the diaper cake. It is lovely, with the silk wisteria. Title: Re: Diaper cake anyone? Post by brewcrew on Aug 22nd, 2006, 3:43pm Smart move, Mel. If you have to wear them and you aren't all there, it doesn't really matter much. But if you have to wear them and you have all your faculties, it's got to be humiliating as all hell. You're a keeper, Melly. |

Title: Re: Diaper cake anyone? Post by DonnaHar on Aug 22nd, 2006, 6:01pm Being, ahumm, on the older than 50 side, I thank you for your sweet consideration, Mel. But for a 50ish party, depends cakes would be funny! That one could be adorned with Geritol, Prep. H, K-Y Jelly, Absorbine Jr., denture adhesive, moth balls......stuff like that. Have you ever thought about taking long, skinny balloons, twisting them in the middle, combining several and making flowers out of them? I've never seen it done and don't know if one could do that, but it sounds pretty. |

Title: Re: Diaper cake anyone? Post by JenniferD on Aug 22nd, 2006, 6:38pm After what my daughter was capable of doing with a diaper, I was afraid to open this thread. Glad I did though. What a cool idea Mel! Very very cool for showers. Can you think of something for my parents 50th anniversary? We're planning a party and don't even know where to start. Jen |

Title: Re: Diaper cake anyone? Post by Melissa on Aug 22nd, 2006, 10:44pm You guys are great, thank you. :-* (the "cake" is all packaged & up on eBay right now *crossing fingers*) DonnaH.- Twisters do those types of flowers. I could learn how, but I'm really not into twisting myself. They are very pretty though. Jennifer- 50th is "Gold", as I'm sure you know, and I wish I could be there to help you decorate for it. There are some beautiful gold 50th wedding anniversary balloons that you could make centerpieces out of along with white & gold tulle, gold curling ribbon & confetti. You could also hand dip white flowers into gold glitter and float some white candles in those bulb shaped bud vases. Here's some ideas from About.com... Put together a CD with songs from the era of the marriage date. Create a poem, write it in gold ink, and display it in a gold colored frame. Put together a family quilt comprised of each square done by a family member or close friends. Make a wish tree. You can use a big branch that you paint gold and decorate with gold ribbons, ornaments etc. Fill the branches with pictures of major events in your life, people who love and cherish you as well as tickets for a trip, travelers checks, gift certificates for different events and restaurants you could use on a trip, etc. Assemble a memory photo album with pictures highlighting 50 years together. Include the wedding, children, grandchildren, friends, trips taken together, homes lived in, etc. A nice addition is to include stories from children and friends. :)I love parties... |

Title: Re: Diaper cake anyone? Post by DonnaHar on Aug 22nd, 2006, 10:57pm Geez Mel, you sound so knowledgable about balloon art. Where did this come from? I don't remember ever hearing you mention this until after the last convention. Your ideas for parties sound great too. You really know your stuff. I sincerely hope you make it big in your new business!! |

I'm not sure Donna. One minute I was thinking of how I could make money doing something that I love and that was fun and the next minute I had immersed myself with website after website and endless reading about balloons and what could be done with them. :-/ It even got to a point where all I did was read about them all day, go to bed thinking of them, dreaming about them and then them being the 1st thing I thought of when I'd wake up in the morning. Geez, I sound like I'm obsessed or something! [smiley=laugh.gif] |
