Title: Readers?
Post by georgej on Aug 17th, 2006, 6:50pm
Liz, Ellen and I are habitual readers.  Are you?

I was wondering whether we might start a thread here about recommended books and what we are reading now--don't know about you, but I'm always looking for something new and interesting.

Right now, I'm reading a couple of non-fiction books:

"Cliffs of Despair--A Journey to the Edge" by Tom Hunt.  It's about Beachy Head in Sussex--a place where a disproportionate number of people have committed suicide by jumping off cliffs over the years.  An eerie, disturbing read.

also,

"Brutal Journey--The Epic Story of the First Crossing of North America" by Paul Schneider.  It's about the travels and hardships of a group of 400 Spaniards, the Navarez Expedition, who set off into the northern unknown in 1528 from Tampa Bay.  Years later, only three emerged.  The rest died en route, after descending into a nightmare of hardship.  Well written, and interesting.

What say you?

Regards,

George

I'm reading Trinity.

Still on page 6 after 13 1/2 years .

Seriously, I'm reading "Black Mass" by Lehr & O'Neill

I love to read, but I'm sure you guys wouldn't be interested in the books that I read.  I'd need to talk to some of the ladies, it's more their speed.

Naw, it's wide open, Kimmie.  As far as I'm concerned, it's for everyone to get recommendations, not just particular genres.

Go for it.

Best,

George

Going away now.  Back in a few hours.

Just finished Angels and Demons and The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown.  Before that it was the Jack Ryan books by Tom Clancey.  There hasn't really been anything that tripped my trigger that is new, so I was rereading those this summer.

I'm getting like Jonny.

I like to read history but since the internet and porn http://www.industreal.spb.ru/smiles/lens.gif?SSImageQuality=Full  :o I spend time reading and researching for stupid ebay. I have books by my chair of which I read a page a day....maybe. Sad really. Now and then I'll reread old paperbacks. It's incredible the stupid crap I was into. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/read paper.gif

I go in cycles between science journals (AJP cell, Science), and fiction.  I like Dean Koontz (the man is a warped person) Clive Cussler. M Crichton.  Basically brain candy.

I might as well just put "modified" in my tagline or include decoder rings to read my first posted reply.

I read boring stuff, so then even crossing out the day on my calender is a distracting highlight.

I like that one too.  Old Ignatius P. Reilly and his d*mned pyloric valve.  LOL.

I've got a copy of John Kennedy Toole's other, earlier (unpublished until years later) book "The Neon Bible" around here somewhere.  Don't like it nearly as well.

Liz is from Nawlins, so "Confederacy" has particular significance with us.

LMAO about the ads from the Home D.  I like 'em too.  Some of it is fiction, though--particularly the part about "You can do it."  I've found that to be science fiction, as a matter of fact.

Shakespeare?  Hm.  "Now Faustus art thou damned...."  Wait a sec'--that's Marlowe.  "Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York..."

Go ahead and shoot me, but I love that stuff too.

George,

what a brilliant idea! :D

I'm a reader. I've been reading all sort of books ever since I learned to read.

I must admit that this summer I've been reading lots of so called "entertainment books" - nice balance to the media theory books I have to read for my dissertation!

But I recommed everyone to take a look at Joseph Murphy's books - his thoughts about the power of the subconcious mind has been inspirational for me.
Those who love to read biographys, take a look at Jane Fonda's. I got it for free and read it with no expectations... and it was great! :)

Me, I keep a Nora Roberts book in my purse for waiting rooms.

Other than that I read IRS rules and regs mostly (boring! but necessary and totally fiction).

Sidney Shelton is always a winner for fiction.

Right now I'm trying to proof MY book (Granny's Horsense Manual). It should be on the best seller list about 2010 at the rate I'm going.

Last novel I read "Cell" by stephen King. I've read every book written by him (regreting wasting my time with some) As far as non- fiction, generally war history. Maybe it's the prior Navy thing, who knows. Reading "The Last Days of Patton" by Ladislas Farago

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King... I've read each book at least twice.  Any of Stephen King's other fiction is also great.  Can't seem to get too interested in his non-fiction though...

Other than Stephen King, the only books I ever seem to read are technical manuals, repair manuals, and certification prep... They are just so... What's the word... Thrilling?  Nope... Funny? Not really... Coma inducing?  Much much closer... Stale?  Close enough.

See... Told y'all that I'm just a borin' geek...

Right now, Liz is reading something called "O Pure and Radiant Heart" by Lydia Millet.  Imagine this:  Oppenheimer, Fermi and Szilard have been reincarnated in the present to fulfill some unknown purpose.  They try to readjust to their changed circumstances, and attempt to understand the present world.  Among other things, Szilard has become addicted to speaking in Ebonic.

Judging by the laughter coming from the other side of the couch, I'd probably better read it.

Best,

"Paris 1919" about the Versailles Treaty and divvy up process that took place after WW1. Much of the bad shit today, and that which has occurred over the last 20 years was germinated in these talks. Some nice perspective to remind you that idiots often rise to the top of politics, always have, always will.

I am a reading freak and always have been!

I average a book every two or three days unless it is one that I just can't put down.

Some of my favorite authors in no particular order:

Patrick O'Brian
Ayn Rand
Bernard Cornwell
Herman Hesse
Wilbur Smith
Dan Brown
Jeff Sharra
James Clavell
Stephen Coonts
Nicholas Sparks
J.R.R. Tolkien
W.E.B. Griffin
Patricia Cornwall
Anne McCaffrey
Carlos Casteneda
Dean Koontz
Stephen Ambrose
B.F. Skinner
William W. Warner

I also read a fair amount of non-fiction but it is mostly first person accounts of war and religious history.

.......The cool thing is that being a ClusterHead I get to re-read a lot of books without remembering much from the first or second or ...well you get the picture.

.....oh yeah, and the cluster board ;)  Thanks Deej

Ree, what are you reading today, and these days?

Of course, it goes looney.  What are you reading?

I'm reading, "Mary Mary", by James Patterson.   His books are great...especially the ones with the Alex Cross character.

Other favorite authors:

John Grisham
W.E.B. Griffin
David Baldacci
Ken Follett
Clive Cussler
Tom Clancy
John Sanford
Mark Berent

Tanner would enjoy Mark Berent...he wrote Eagle Station, Rolling Thunder and Steel Tiger.   These are very good reads (Vietnam).
