Hi All,
I spilled a lot of water on the carpet in the utility room. The floor under it is concrete so I am not worried about that, but how do I dry the carpet out without it getting moldy and stinky?

Lots and lots of fans... One of those commercial dryers (okay... Not as easy to find)... One those things that construction sites use in the winter to help keep the workers warm that looks like a little jet engine (Wait... That may be a fire hazard indoors)... I'd go with lots towels and big box fans...

Four words: Wet/Dry Shop Vac.

You can remove the paper filter from these and use them to suck up liquids. THEN use the fans.

I did use towels to wick up some of the water, it worked pretty well.
Now I have a fan blowing on it and I turned an electric heater in that room to keep the temp up. I hope it doesnt stink too bad.

Should I put baking soda on it or something to keep it from molding?

Only because I've had to do it too many times myself. We also have a carpet cleaner into which you put detergent and water, pull the trigger in the forward direction (dispensing the cleaner), then let up as you pull it back toward you (sucking up the wet/dirt mix).

B$, I figure you could skip the step where you dispense and just suck. That didn't sound the greatest, but you know what I mean. If you don't have one of these, you can rent them at many tool rental centers.

If you don't have one, though, I'd go for the wet/dry vac option. $75 will get you a decent one, and you'll have it around to do all sorts of sucking. That didn't sound very good, either, but....well....get to sucking. The mold is reproducing as we write.

Get a dehumidifier, Brian, it will suck the moisture out in no time, and using a fan too, will make it that much quicker.

Just make sure you've vac'd or toweled up all you can get first, though. You probably won't have to use carpet deoderizer this way. The dehu's work prretty fast. Especially if you shut the door to the room.
