Post by zwibbs/Scott on Aug 10th, 2006, 7:23am
They nailed 21 bastards who were going to carry bombs on carry-on luggage then blow them up over parts of England and the US..............I remember when the police in England cornered 2 terrorists at their homes and made them walk outside totally nude, so as to protect them from consealing anything.                                                                            They have been watching these 21 people for a few months and made their move to stop them today !!!--I am extremely impressed !

They would consider dying for the cause an honor. Their picture would hang in reverence on the walls of their families homes as a martyr. Let them rot in jail for the rest of their miserable lives.

I agree with Steve.  Dying in that situation would be too much of a tribute.  Let them rot in jail & live long life sentences plus 1 day.

I hope they catch the rest of them

My mom called me about the same fear for me.  I'm flying over 2 days after 9/11.  I guess this means I can't carry on my toiletry kit anymore or even a bottle of water!  I hope they will still serve drinks on the plane, however, because that's a long time to go without some kind of fluids!  There will probably be an even greater chance that luggage will not make it...

I'm glad they caught them, but now I'm nervous about flying over!

Well, DON'T be scared to fly. I flew to London two days after September 11th in 2001. That meant 4 security checks, but no delays. Now things are different.

I'd be just one annoyed traveller right now, because I just heard that flights from Helsinki to London and New York are either cancelled or hours late.

And why? Because passangers have, goodness sake, packed alcohol, facial cream, shampoo, perfumes and other liquid stuff with them! ::) Thank heavens I'm not flying anywhere right now because my Red Bulls would be taken away from me! :o

In fact, the news informed me that passangers to UK cannot even take their HANDBAGS to the plane, just their tickets and passports! Oh come on! >:( Too bad they're not kidding...

Now, I understand that security is security, but this is taking things few steps too far. I need my lipstick, chewing gum and notebook! I never travel anywhere without them. Sure this experience teaches people to, hmm, travel lightly...

Steve is correct... to kill these low lifes would be a honor.. Real punishment could only come if they are allowed to rot in prison while performing hard labor.

I am so very glad that they were caught before they could kill anyone.

Matt Mary and Lizzie, none of you need be afraid, the airports are scrupulously checked over and you'll be as safe as you can be anywhere.

More drinks than you can handle are served on flights so don't worry about that and check the TSA website every day for updates nearer when you fly for what you can and can't carry on.

You're coming to me anyway, there's a limit to what you'll need!  ;;D

I flew four days after the first London bombings coming to the US last year, security was tight but it was very reassuring.

We're going to have a brilliant time, you've got more to worry about from me than any terrorists, I'd sort those little buggers out if they spoilt my plans!  ;)

Can't wait to see you all!
Helen

Nice to know we occasionally get something right (and in SPADES they got this one right!! Just have to try and convict them now and get them locked up to rot for life)

Not much consolation to the family of the innocent man gunned down in Stockwell tube due to an error. Callous but I'm afraid I will live with one innocent man killed in error rather than 1000's of dead innocent people.

Flying out of the country as you all fly in I'm afraid - nothing personal Lizzie et al- off on hols. Hope you have a wonderful time in the UK. Watch out for that Limey though- she's dangerous! :o  ;)

Love to you all

P.S. Not looking forward to trying to keep a 6 year old amused on a flight, equipped only with the inflight magazine and a sick bag! Just bought him a bloody personal DVD player for his birthday too.

AND having to show my Tampax and Imigran to the world in a clear plastic bag, might as well just shout "yes folks, get out of my way I'm menstrual and I get headaches, don't fuck with me" Dread to think what other personal things people will have to have on show in these bags.

No, Jefferson was not Italian, so I don't think calling him a goombah is appropriate.  Even if he was Italian, I don't know it would be appropriate.

He isn't the guy who forgot 'that this nation was founded on Christian beliefs' - he did more to found this country than anyone else, and he wasn't Christian.  Sure, he knew that most of his compatriots were Christian, but at the end of the day, they decided not to put any reference to Gods in the US Constitution.

Curious to see the rift betwen Condi and George over the current situation - she wanted a cease-fire, he wanted Israel to attack Syria while they were going into Lebanon.  Fortunately, the Israelis are aware that Bush is not a deep thinker, and that Cheney is not good at choosing targets.

Well, not sure why one of the Bobs tried to make this a religious discussion - I guess he doesn't like Jefferson.  Or something.

The Presidents have always had a 'bully pulpit' and have used it for various purposes as they saw fit.  The fact that George made a speech that referenced God is no surprise.  The Constitution doesn't require Presidents abandon all religious beliefs while they serve. It does limit their authority to use the government to advance their religious interests, though.

And clearly, we have moved away from Washingtonian attitudes.  The current gang certainly isn't humble about asking for God's protection and favor - with hubris, they arrogantly proclaim that we already have it.  Funny how religious fundamentalists and oil money are driving the current governments over there and over here.

Its too bad that John Adams' prayer went unanswered: "I pray Heaven to bestow the best of blessing on this house (the White House) and on all that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof!"

Thomas Jefferson
A Prayer for the Nation

Almighty God, Who has given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech Thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will. Bless our land with honorable ministry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people, the multitude brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endow with Thy spirit of wisdom those whom in Thy name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that through obedience to Thy law, we may show forth Thy praise among the nations of the earth. In time of prosperity fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in Thee to fail; all of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

"Even if the word "God" was in the Constitution, it probably would not make any difference. Secularist groups like the ACLU would probably dismiss it as a mere formality. There are 50 reasons to believe that this is true. Since secularists dismiss all references to God in the state constitutions, there is no reason to believe that they would behave any differently with the federal Constitution. Their commitment to secularism will not allow for the possibility that they might be wrong."

The Treaty of Tripoli (1796) has been controversial and Wikipedia has a bit of debate over Article 11.

Quote:
"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."

Arguments in support of view that Article 11 shows the United States was not a Christian nation:

Joel Barlow And The Treaty With Tripoli
Does the 1797 Treaty of Tripoli say that "The Government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion?"

The mistake modern Christian Nationalists make is obvious. They believe that a person or a country can be 'Christian' even if they have no interests in the teachings of Christ, and they ignore those teachings which do not sit with their preconceived notions. They have no intention of implementing the Kingdom of God as outlined in the Sermon on the Mount. They believe that God is a Republican, and that he is angered by stem cell research.

The fundamentalists in this country are little different from the fundamentalists of the Middle East.  They believe in using the police power of the government to enforce their religious laws and biases. They denounce as secularist any government that has not established a state religion. The do not believe in the equality of women. They see gays as a threat to their own sexuality.  And they are suspicious of science, which promotes subversive notions that the Earth is not flat or that evolution is a biological process.

I personally knew a doctor in Illinois that was kidnapped by the "Army of God" because he performed abortions.  My father (who was in law enforcement) got threatening letters and phone calls from the posse comitatus. The Oklahoma City bomber was part of the Christian Identity movement.  Most members of the clan considered themselves Christians.  Fundamentalists are active in this country - maybe less so than in others, but the violence is here.

edit: I'm sorry your family was subjected to those morons Jonathan. We obviously have extremist in this country, don't get me wrong, we're no different than anybody else in that sense of the word, I didn't mean any disrespect I just wanted to make that clear.

Nothing like blaming Thomas Jefferson for the country's ills. He's different though; as were most of
those revered by the pulpit pounding Christian right. They were products of the enlightenment and knew that religion can be messy and waste lives. They
did this blessed place a favor by leaving religious types to their own devices. It's worked so far.

"The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe with blood for centuries"---James Madison....for whom you can blame the Constitution and these quotes:

"The means of defense against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home."

""Since the general civilization of mankind, I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of freedoms of the people by gradual and silent encroachment of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations."

Damn. If only guys like him weren't around at the time so we could all be all alike.

The Klan is like the Muslim fundamentalists. They murder, and blow up things that get in their way of sending Jews and Blacks back to where they came from. It's not really a good idea to be a Catholic around them either.

This said; the world is stuck. If the terrorists are successful a wedge is driven into our way of life. If we are successfully agressive, a wedge is driven into our way of life.

This is going to be bloody but that's not new either. The ability to export terror on such a scale is and to get on TV is.

Spot on from your link: " Thomas Jefferson believed that the ethical system of Jesus was the finest the world has ever seen. In compiling what has come to be called "The Jefferson Bible," he sought to separate those ethical teachings from the religious dogma and other supernatural elements that are intermixed in the account provided by the four Gospels."

So TJ was a non-religious christian (small c) or 'christologist' or 'Jesusian' that believed that Jesus of Nazareth was a bloke who developed a system of ethics (how to behave and stuff) but Jefferson wasnt' interested in worshipping Jesus as part of a three-part God, and he was sceptical or dismissive of all that talk about angels, miracles, and the resurection.  And while Jefferson did believe in God, he considered God to be inneffible and all mysterious-like, not someone to converse with, not some one/some thing that could be pinned down.

Clearly, Jefferson did not "accept Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior" in the sense that most fundamentalists consider the litmus test of being a Christian.  Jefferson would have likely accepted the same ethical teachings from some one named Brian, although in this universe, Brian was a bit more muddled. ("And a man shall lay down his hammer, and remember not where he put it .")

Well, not sure why one of the Bobs tried to make this a religious discussion - I guess he doesn't like Jefferson.  Or something.

Nope.  Just figured I'd get to watch you fall all over yourself.
