Title: employees......
Post by maffumatt on Aug 8th, 2006, 9:16am
One of my employees has been out for a month for an injury, the other was out for 2 weeks for the reserves. The one that was hurt started back yesterday, and called in sick last night for today. The one in the reserves was suppose to start back Thursday but was a no show, worked FRI and Mon and was a no show this morning. I havent missed a day in 5 years, I just don't understand people. What happened to work ethics? Today is interchange day and here I am sitting at work by myself with the engine 7 miles up the track and cars to get out to the UP. Sometimes I think it would be better to just be an employee..........

If I lived closer, I'd ask if you were hiring.

It sucks when you can't rely on people to be there.

Work ethics went the way of the spotted owl.  It is rare to find people who have pride and ownership in their jobs.  Most people just try to find new and inventive ways to get out of work and to do as little as possible when they are there.  I say fire the bastards...2 days of NS/NC are job abondoment.  YMMV

From all the people I have hired, 1 in 10 have good work ethics and are exceptional workers.  50% are marginal and 40% are incenced that they actually have to do work for their pay.  The ones that make their own hours are shown the door.

Senior citizens are the most dependable and I'd take them over a snot nosed it's all about me, me me 18 year old kid anyday!

I always made payday on Monday. I knew everyone would be there to get their checks. ;)

Your right Matt! It seems nowadays, everyone thinks their job is a right and not a priveledge. I cannot figure some people out.

Sorry Matt :-/ that you're having such a tough time with your employees..

But I really think that it's a trend... We have very few problems here at work with the older estasblished workers, but the younger ones is a different story (not all of them).

Our Station Manager hired a new assistant in February. Kim spends 20% or her day on her cell phone, 10%on personal calls on the company phone, 20% in someone elses office and another 20% with people sitting in her office laughing and talking. The other 30% is spent between lunch, restroom breaks and work... Every Since Kim has been here, Kathleen (Sales Asst. ) have to do part of her work (daily) in order to catch up on things that were not done from the day before. It get's worse each day... If Gary leave for the day @ 3, Kim leaves @ 3:15...

Why she's still here, noone knows.. I think it's because the Big Boss don't want to admit he made a mistake.

I have always treated any company I have worked for like it was my company and have l ways had good work ethics the only time I miss work is because I was really sick or going to a job interview because of not being appreciated by my employer.
What strikes me as odd is everywhere I have worked there have been people that under produce yet that is the standard they set and the one they are graded on but people like me that produce much more are held to a higher standard even when the pay is the same?
It’s a shame it makes you want to be a flake when being a good worker never gets you anywhere and you see people that don’t care get ahead. I have left company’s that after I left had to hire two people to fill my position paying almost double what I made but I could never get them to give me a raise and when I left the new employer would give me 30% more then I was making, just doesn’t make sense.

I have given up trying to find halfway decent help. I've noticed for the last 12 years that most young people don't want to work. I have 4 people that work directly under me. Two need absolutely no supervision from me. One needs a little (he's 22 and does a pretty good job). And the other one needs a lot of supervision, (he's also 22).

I've learned to just give them what they can handle, and nothing more. Becky does 3 times the work of both of them, and she's there for half as long during the day.

The one guy IS starting to pay more attention, and ask questions and learn. That's a good sign. I think he's found that the more work he does, and less talking, the faster the day goes by. I don't mind if they talk while they work, but not everyone is capable of doing that.

It's America today.

I my 50 years I've seen just about everything that I was taught change to the point that I could not imagine what I see now.

It seemed simple.  Do the very best you can...everyday.  It was drilled into my skull.

Now, we can't even cut our own grass.

I need to stop now before I get started.

Dad had 18 employees, most of them were WWII vets. These were kids of the depression. They looked at things differently. They knew that things can turn around awfully fast. They also knew that he could get along with 17 for a long time.

I haven't seen anyone bring up the following point so I will.

Many states are now Right-To-Work states.
Which means basically the employer can release you from your job without cause.
I know this doesn't excuse anyone from having lax work ethics but it is a fact.

Employees are no longer treated as they once were so
their devotion & dedication has suffered.
The world of big business now [for the most part] treats employees as expendable.
Hard to "get into" your job when you don't know if you will have it from one day to the next.

Some companies have gotten wise and have employees be part owners in the company. That seems to reduce
the turnover rates. It also seems to instill [in some] work ethics & dedication to the company.

There are several reason why America's work force
has no dedication anymore, I am just bringing up a few.

Oh, and pride. Pride in a product you help produce.
That's another.
Not many are proud of the work they do or who they work for, they just want a payday.

*This all has just been my opinion of course. I am referring to the work force in general, thankfully there are thousands that rise above the rest.

I disagree that "It's kids of today".  We're just older and more responsible. Yeah, the WWII generation was a bit different but tell me, who bred/raised the kids of the 60's? Rhetorical question but interesting none the less.
Many years a ago I read an excerpt from a hummanitites text book where the author complained about kids of today. The excerpt was written by Socrates (469 - 399 BC).
Ask any generation and I beleive they will say the same of kids of today.
MHO.
