Title: Question ? Post by lilboo on Aug 1st, 2006, 6:43pm The Doc is going to be giving my hubby a new preventative, it's a shot that you give yourself under the skin called D.H.E. Just curious if anybody here has used it or knows anything about it. He has an appointment next week for them to teach him how to do it. Thanks Kathy |

Title: Re: Question ? Post by maffumatt on Aug 1st, 2006, 6:46pm You need to PM either Gena or Unsolved. DHE is some serious stuff. |

Title: Re: Question ? Post by ClusterChuck on Aug 1st, 2006, 6:50pm That is a SERIOUS drug! I hope he does not have any heart problems! I am surprised that they are allowing him to give it to himself, without supervision. I have had the DHE treatment twice. I was admitted to the hospital, for a few days, while they administered it in a slow drip, and they monitored me CLOSELY. I was not aware of it being used as a preventative. It is usually used to break a cycle, when nothing else is working. I don't want to scare you, but research this drug, and be careful with it. But, I hope this treatment works for him with no side effects. GOOD LUCK!! Chuck |

Title: Re: Question ? Post by lilboo on Aug 1st, 2006, 7:00pm As far as heart problems, yes he does, he had a major heart attack back in Nov. of 04 and had a quadruple bypass. He's still having issues with his heart he also has a difibulator. I will definately be checking in on this before they start him on it, I'll have plenty of questions ready. Thanks |

Title: Re: Question ? Post by BarbaraD on Aug 1st, 2006, 7:55pm Lib DHE affects the heart valve (they had a class action lawsuit on this a few years back). I've heard of one other person doing DHE under the skin. Most of the time it's administered IV or IM. It IS a VERY serious drug. I've used it over the years to break a cycle, but never as a preventative. Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Question ? Post by brewcrew on Aug 1st, 2006, 8:06pm It's the same drug (Dihydroergotamine) that's in the nasal spray called Migranal. I went through the IV treatment in the hospital a few years ago, and they always preceded the IV injection with some drug that prevented me from puking all over the place. From the National Headache Foundation website: Quote:
Be careful with this shit. It broke my cycle, but that was only when oxygen and triptans stopped working. I'm no doctor, but if your husband has a history of heart trouble, I'd be running in the opposite direction of DHE45 right now. At the very least, he needs to bring this subject up with the prescribing doctor. |

Title: Re: Question ? Post by Dissident on Aug 1st, 2006, 9:54pm Yup, used the ole D.H.E (nasal) myself for ONE cycle...it's shit IMO! It came in the exact same little glass bottle as the one in the below clip but it was administered differently (into a nasal sprayer). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlcjHDDG8dE |

Title: Re: Question ? Post by nani on Aug 1st, 2006, 9:58pm Kathy... do not let the dr give it to him without talking to his cardiologist! I'll say it again... VERY serious stuff. |

Title: Re: Question ? Post by superhawk2300 on Aug 1st, 2006, 9:59pm Hey guys, I got, like, a case of Migrinal. Does the danger have to do with the delivery method or just the drug itself? |

Title: Re: Question ? Post by lilboo on Aug 1st, 2006, 10:44pm Well, I mentioned to him what some of you had to say and now he's having second thoughts. I read about it on WebMD and it does not sound like a preventative and he is on Metroprolo (spelling?) which it mentions about not taking it if your on that. I think he needs to get his neurologist together with his cardiologist before they do anything. It does sound like serious stuff. Thanks for your input, you guys are great. |

It's the drug itself. IV is direct and works very quickly. But any delivery method is dangerous if you have a heart condition. The drug constricts blood vessels - all of them, and you don't want that if your coronary arteries are already constricted. |

Title: Re: Question ? Post by Ree on Aug 1st, 2006, 11:04pm Dave went into the hospital when he had a 7 month cycle and they put him on an IV of DHE once a day for a week..... when they administered it they treated him like a lab rat... the whole damn hospital came to see if the guy was going to blow up... and the chief of staff administered it. They had him hooked up to monitors etc. So I am very leary about the way they toss around DHE and let people administer it to themselves.... I have also heard about the heart valve thing and we are quite nervous about it. The DHE worked for a week... then he got wacked a few times more so that the Beast could show us who was in charge. That was his longest cycle ever though so we have been very lucky... He won't be taking any more DHE... ree |
