Title: Back 2 Irag - Please Keep Him In Your Prayers
Post by LadyLuv on Aug 1st, 2006, 1:15pm
Last Saturday, my Godson returned to Irag..

Doug who has been in Irag since last October came home for 10 days and has now returned for another 9 months (or possibly longer).  Doug also served in Desert Storm.

Please include my Doug in your daily Prayer.

I agree Mrs. Deej, I do pray for the safety of all the troops.

While standing out side of the hotel at this years Milcom Convention, a patron of the hotel (not attending OUCH Convention) came over to our group and asked if any of us had any relatives in Irag?

Before anyone else could answer:

I heard the best answer that I have ever heard. Ramon stated, "I do".. the guest ask, who?  And Ramon answered "I have 1000s . each person over there that has an American Flag on their uniform."

Ree.. will he be coming home for good or just on leave? I Pray for all of them also... the following is the best state I heard since the war started.

Peace & Blessing
LL

:-/My son was supposed to come home from Iraq tomorrow, we got this little surprize a few days ago!

                                                             Pappy

BAGHDAD, Iraq–The U.S. command in Iraq announced Saturday that it was sending the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team to Baghdad to try to quell the sectarian violence sweeping the capital, and a U.S. official said more American soldiers would follow as the military gears up to take the streets from gunmen.

The 172nd, which was set to return home after a year in Iraq, was tapped by George W. Casey Jr., the top U.S. commander in Iraq, to bring its quick-moving, light-armored vehicles to patrol the sprawling city of 6 million people, hoping security forces respond faster to the tit-for-tat killings by Shiite militias and Sunni Arab insurgents.

The U.S. military hopes more armor will intimidate gunmen, who in recent weeks have become more brazen in their attacks.

“This will place our most experienced unit with our most mobile and agile systems in support of our main effort,” said Casey. “This gives us a potentially decisive capability to affect security in Baghdad.”

President Bush said this week that he had decided to send more troops to Baghdad after the surge in reprisal killings began to threaten the unity government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, which took power May 20.

Families readying for the return of soldiers to Fort Wainwright were notified midweek that the brigade’s deployment was extended by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. About 380 of the soldiers have already returned to Fairbanks. Now they are waiting word to hear how many of them will have to return to Iraq.

Aside from the timing of the extension, families also were concerned with the prospect of the soldiers going to Baghdad. The 172nd has spent the year in northern Iraq, near Mosul and Tal Afar, conducting security and counterinsurgency operations and helping train Iraqi security forces. But Baghdad, some family members say, is a different beast.

“They’re going right from the frying pan into the fire,” Samantha Gouldner said earlier this week when she heard her husband, Sgt. Ken Gouldner, may be going to Baghdad.

The brigade commander, Col. Michael Shields, told Alaska reporters Thursday there would be challenges if the brigade was to move to a different location within the country, including Baghdad. He said while soldiers have built relationships with local tribal and government leaders in their area over the last year, different areas of the country have very different cultural and ethnic makeups. He said wherever the brigade is moved, it will have to adapt to a new environment and surroundings, but will continue to receive training throughout the extension.

Since deploying in August, the brigade has lost 19 soldiers, 14 of those to combat deaths. More than 300 have been wounded or injured, according to U.S. Army Alaska.

The extension of the brigade, especially when so close to returning home, illustrates how the wave of violence in Baghdad has dashed administration hopes for substantial reductions in the 127,000-member U.S. mission in Iraq before the November midterm elections.
