Title: I don't know what to do... (puter) Post by Melissa on Jul 28th, 2006, 4:24pm I can transport my laptop anywhere, as long as I have AC power. I just purchased a battery because I thought that it had shorted out when Eli dumped water everywhere about 2 years ago. Well, it wasn't the batter that's the problem, my puter doesn't want to recharge it. I want to be able to take my puter with me for when I would go to a clients house, as I then can pull up examples and figure out prices on things. But it's such a PAIN to have to plug the bitch in somewhere! I don't have money for a new puter, and I have NO clue how I would be able to fix this? I don't want to spend more than $100 to have it fixed, as I didn't pay a whole lot of money for the refurbished things to begin with. I have already tried cleaning the contacts and using my can of air to get out any particles, but still nada. Don't get me wrong, I love my puter, but I just feel stuck right now. :( Tanks, vent over. |

Title: Re: I don't know what to do... (puter) Post by Mattrf on Jul 28th, 2006, 6:54pm I am a puter guy but it sounds like something probably shorted when the water was spilled on it, water and puters don’t mix well. That is a bummer if we lived close I would have been glad to look at it for free. Do you know anyone who works on computers that could help you? It really sucks when a computer that is three years or older has problems because the cost is to much to fix them, a repair place can charge over a hundred an hour with a one hour minimum and you can see how fast the fix would be more then it is worth. You could take a volt meter and test the leads that hit the battery and see if there is any power getting to it, but not sure how much that would help. Do you know anyone that has a laptop with the same battery so you can at least see if it will run off the battery if it was charged? Sorry none of this is much help. Matt [smiley=damncomputer.gif] |

Title: Re: I don't know what to do... (puter) Post by Melissa on Jul 28th, 2006, 7:41pm Thanks anyway Jim. :-* Matt- after talking with someone on this site, I've decided not to worry about it and just buy myself a new computer whenever it is I get the money from my first, or second, job. Unfortunately no one I know of around here has a puter like mine (I'm out in the country with a lot of, um..."slower" folk ;;D), so that's a no go. You're very sweet to try and help me though, I really do appreciate it! :)melly |

Title: Re: I don't know what to do... (puter) Post by ShadowLord on Jul 29th, 2006, 8:15am If you knew for sure that it can still run under battery power as long as the battery is charged, then you could probably find an external charger for it for less than $100. Another option is using an external battery, but they tend to be over $100, and the bigger (more capacity) they are, the more they cost, but you may get lucky and find an OK one for under $100 somewhere. The only one I found at NewEgg.com was $139 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834999171), and they're currently out of stock. Thank you so much Drk. :) Would you believe the external charger is what I ending up needing? With Beeyul's help, I found one for a reasonable price. He's been absolutely fantastic at helping me out and I can't thank him enough!!! :-* :)mel |

I tend to agree, stay away from the e-machines. Let me know, Mel, when you are ready, you can pick up some pretty decent ones now, and school will start soon, and you can get some pretty good deals. I'll give you a few ideas, Mel. :) |

Title: Re: I don't know what to do... (puter) Post by ShadowLord on Jul 30th, 2006, 9:35pm Then again... At least when you call tech support you won't be talkin' to someone halfway around the globe that can barely speak english. You'll just have to pay long distance charges, and wait 'til they're open. Other than that... They don't make their own laptops, so they're not really any better or worse than anyone else's. PFDAN............................................................................
