Title: Tomorrow is round 2 Post by Paul98 on Jul 27th, 2006, 9:43pm Last Tues. I had an unwanted guest in my house. Sick bat and I awoke to intense itching on the back of my hand and broken skin. Bat excaped. Spent 5+ hours Tues. night in the ER waiting for post exposure treatment to rabies. 3-20 ml gamma glob. shots one being on the back of the hand where the skin was broken. tet. shot and the rabies vaccine, + blood drawn. Tomorrow is the second treatment in a series of 5 spread over a month. To be honest, I don't see what all the fuss is about these shots being painful. Some of my trex shots have been more annoying. Granted the 20 ml in the back of the hand was uncomfortable but far from painful. The most painful part so far was my ass BEFORE I was treated. It was sore from all the sitting and waiting. However, as the treatments progress and my titer rises, the post injection site may become real tender with the increased immune reaction. I may not be saying "piece of cake" when we get to round 4 or 5! Wish me luck! Thank god for medicine! 200 years ago I would be a gonner, 60 years ago I sure as hell would not be doing sit-ups after treatment. Jim, be careful with the Cyotes! Ain't foaming yet, -P. |

Title: Re: Tomorrow is round 2 Post by alchemy on Jul 27th, 2006, 10:53pm Paul that sucks for you to have to go through that. My mother inlaw got bit in the neck by a bat. She had to do all the shots. I think if they could have found the bat they would have given it the shots instead ::) |

Paul that sounds horrible, I'm so sorry you're having to go through it. Is this in case it had rabies or can they'did they test you for some sort of positive response first? |

Title: Re: Tomorrow is round 2 Post by Paul98 on Jul 28th, 2006, 5:18am Thanks Guys (and Gals)- Helen, although I did not witness the bat bite me, it is assumed all bats are positive for rabies. Since I did have broken skin on the hand and swelling and itching and the fact I saw the bad directly on my skin, shots are warrented. I really wish the little puke didn't get away. I'll bet there is a 99.9% chance the bat was not rabid but still, 0.1% chance of contracting a 100% fatal disease.......I'll take the shots. At least the shots are small fromm here on out and only one per treatment. Jim, to funny about the inlaw joke. [smiley=laugh.gif] Watch out for the Cyotes! -P. |
