Here is some California insanity for you, and I think there price is off a bit.
It says my 3 bedroom 1 bath 980Sqf house is worth 705k but it actually more like 800k and I bought it three years ago for 430k and we are not even in the best area.
I could not afford my own home if I had to buy it now, hell we could barely afford it at the price we paid.

Yeah, that's a cool site.  I've been there before.  For my area, it only gives me the tax value, which has absoluely no correlation with actual "market" value, but it is helpful.  It's also out of date by at least 6 months because it's showing the property next to me with a really lowvalue, as a vacant lot.  There's a lovely two story brick home there now.  Also, this time, and the first time I accessed this site, they tell me that "satellite images are not available for this area".  Oh well, it's still a good site to visit to give a homeowner an idea of how his property stacks up against the neighbors.

There was a nice, even-handed, non-panicky article about real estate values in the Wall Street Journal today. While there will be isolated instances of a downturn they're indicating that on average we're really looking at more of a breather than a downturn. Based on how most people's values have gone up over the last several years, there's not much wrong with a breather and it shouldn't hurt hardly anybody but those who were a tad agressive and took huge risks anyway.

Geezz! I'm living in an invisible house. It said NO HOME WAS FOUND at my address. Looks like a house and I still have to clean the darn thing...... ummmmm....

Also said there was no house at my kid's address. And they were going to sell it.... guess that knocks the price down quite a bit. Maybe they should just quit paying the mortgage.... ;;D

Correct. It varies from place to place - around here, sales of existing homes dropped significantly (20-30%), and prices went up a little, but not at the rate of previous years.  Hope it is a leveling off, not a big drop.
