Sorry for stepping on your post. Can anyone help zwibbs identify that the flower in question is indeed a "tiger lily" or "Lilium lancifolium"? It looks like one to me albeit a little light on the number of spots. http://www.efloras.org/object_page.aspx?object_id=7360&flora_id=1 Hope that helps. Scott |

Thanks Mel. I thought you were mad at me. If I did something to offend you---I'm sorry. I love flowers and in NY the Tigers have been out the past week. My garden is booming---Basil, Rosemary, parsley----but the Tomatoes have lagged. The weather has been weird. |

It's been weird here too. The corn is stunted as well as those Lilies we're talking about. The stems are supposed to be at LEAST about 16" high, the ones you see, are less than a foot. :-/ |

Title: Re: a bug Post by sailpappy on Jul 26th, 2006, 9:34pm ;;D ;;DNice Picture Mel, Shake the bug off, clip the flower and wash it, Day Lillies are yummy, all varities are edible as long as you don't use pesticides on them!! Hehehehehe! I was tempted to stop in the middle of the Highway on the way to Clusterchucks. there were masive beds in the Medium of the road! I guess its a good thing Terri doesn't eat flowers or I might have ended up incarcerated!! Pappy |

Title: Re: a bug Post by sailpappy on Jul 27th, 2006, 9:36pm Daylilies - Slightly sweet with a mild vegetable flavor, like sweet lettuce or melon. Their flavor is a combination of asparagus and zucchini. Chewable consistency. Some people think that different colored blossoms have different flavors. To use the surprisingly sweet petals in desserts, cut them away from the bitter white base of the flower. Also great to stuff like squash blossoms. Flowers look beautiful on composed salad platters or crowning a frosted cake. Sprinkle the large petals in a spring salad. In the spring, gather shoots two or three inches tall and use as a substitute for asparagus. NOTE: Many Lilies contain alkaloids and are NOT edible. Day Lillies may act as a laxative. Title: Re: a bug Post by LeLimey on Jul 28th, 2006, 3:31am Vig and Mel I don't know what it is with the two of you and nasty arsed bugs I'm sure ::) I hate them, anything with more than four legs is a definite anaethema to me..ewww. Barney came in with a handful of yellow and black caterpillars yesterday to show me and I about screamed the house down at him.. those things belong in the garden! Next time he wants to show me bugs he can call me to the back door (little bugger only did it to make me screech, he finds it hugely amusing so I can't disappoint now can I?! ;) ) |

Title: Re: a bug Post by Jasmyn on Jul 28th, 2006, 4:53am Sherbet Mel, when I saw the heading "a bug" I thought: "Charlie with the flu, now Mel, I should tell these young kids to stop rolling in the grass at conventions!" Well, after the photo... stop rolling in the grass, you'll pick up bugs. ;) Nice bloomin pics ;;D Bloody conventions, left me with a spelling handicap! |

Title: Re: a bug Post by Cathi04 on Jul 28th, 2006, 2:31pm OK...Technically, that is an Oriental Lily. I believe the name is Juliet. Daylillies come in big bushes of tall slender spikey leaves, and they dont hold up well when cut. Due to the color of this variety, it very much resembles a daylily, but, in fact, if you look, one flower per stem, shorter, thicker leaves, it is an Oriental lily....like the coveted Rubrum lillies(white with pink throats) or the highly prized Mont Blanc lily(pure white, bigger than your hand, commonly used in bridal bouquets.... how's THAT for info overload?
