Title: Fishin' Tale (Not CH) Post by TxBasslady on Jul 24th, 2006, 11:37pm Now I gotta tell ya....I have a grandson who dearly loves to fish. He fits in real well with this G'ma, cause I am obsessed with the sport. Dalton has fished with me for years (he's 11). All those years, he NEVER caught a fish....cause he won't leave the damn bait in the water long enough. I'm talkin' bass fishin', cause that's what I like, and artificial bait. Last month he came over to the lake, and instead of a plastic worm, I put a 1/4 oz. spinner bait on his line, cause I figured he'd have to leave that in the water. Well bless his heart, he caught fish! :o He's been beggin' ever since to come back and fish. OK he's back, and today I took him up to the big bridge on Toledo Bend. This bridge spans 2 1/2 miles long, and the spot where it crosses the Sabine River, is the Texas/Louisiana State Line. It's about 20 miles from the lakehouse, and I bet he ask me 1000 questions before we got up there. What bait we gonna use? Can we use live bait? How deep we gonna fish? How long we gonna fish? G'ma, how much farther till we get there? Are we bass fishin"? How deep are the fish?.....on and on and on. You see, I'm all for him catchin' fish...but I have learned that there are certain ways to fish with him....cause he'll get bored real quick. So, today I took him to the bridge, tied a big ole crank bait on his line, and we proceeded to troll in the river channel. We hit a honey hole where the river makes a bend, and holy shit, we raked in the striper and white bass. The ice chest was overflowing.....and the fish were floppin' all over the boat. I finally had to turn on the live wells and put the fish we were still catchin' in there. He absolutely had a ball! ;;D These were nice fish! Most went 3-4 lbs. He's already askin' when we're gonna go again [smiley=huh.gif] I just had to share this....cause this is really not my type of fishin', but I enjoyed the hell out of it. I never dreamed that he and I would fill an ice chest AND the live wells. He's hooked! No way he's gonna go back to Texas till he hits that river channel again. It thrills me to see my kids happy ;;D It takes very little to make them feel that way. :) Take a kid fishin'! You'll never regret it...and you'll make a friend for life. :-* Jean |

Great post, Jean. I really enjoyed it. One of the most memorable experiences of my life was teaching a week-long fly fishing class to a group of kids between 10 and 14. What a hoot! I think I learned more from them than they did from me. Nice to hear about your fishin' grandson. Tell us any new stories that come along--please? He's hooked deep, now, f'sure. Best, George |

Title: Re: Fishin' Tale Post by Sean_C on Jul 24th, 2006, 11:51pm I caught a 6 lb bronze back on crank bait in Little Sandy Res 6 years ago, I wanted to keep her and put her in my 300 gallon tank, but I didn't think she'd make the trip home so I released her. Sandy res is loaded with big fish, but access sucks. Definately a very cool fish ;;D Sean........................... |

Title: Re: Fishin' Tale Post by Edna on Jul 24th, 2006, 11:55pm Jean, wonderful story !! But dear lady, please tell us all what we're longing to hear................ who REALLY caught the biggest fish ;) Really great advice, "take a kid fishing".......but if I may add to it............ take a mom fishing is just as great. I love it when my son and I go fishing, something we can share that's quite different. And, for the record, I caught the biggest fish on our last trip....LOL love you Jean, EDNA |

Title: Re: Fishin' Tale Post by TxBasslady on Jul 24th, 2006, 11:55pm No smallies here....those are up north. We have largemouth/black bass. Our lake waters are 95 degrees...too warm for the smallies. Biggest bass for me was a 8.69. That took big bass of the year for me in a bass club I fish. My next largest is a 8.68. I'll not stop till I get a double digit..LOL :-/ Jean |

We only went a couple of times when he was younger. We just fished in the lake for Trout. He get's bored REALLY easy...then starts flinging the pole around...then in the water...I've had to untangle the line from trees...rescue poles from the lake...re-bate (he wouldn't touch the worms), recast every 30 seconds, etc, etc. And he's even caught one before by MY GOD would he touch it?? NO WAY!!! Freaked out! Something about a mother and son time on the lake...I'm surprised he lived :) Mast |

I grew up in Northern New Jersey and trout fishing was my thing. I can't remember what I did yesterday but I can remember when I was twelve and caught 3 trout in one day !!! And I certainly remember all the fish my little guy caught right here ! |

Anytime you're willin', Jean, and the creek don't rise... ;;D Not much to learn, as far as casting goes. A person can teach anybody to fly cast in about two hours. The rest of it takes a lifetime to learn. Plenty of willing trout up here to practice on. (Idaho). All the best, George |

Title: Re: Fishin' Tale (Not CH) Post by BarbaraD on Jul 25th, 2006, 7:51am I started fishing with my Dad when I was small. My brother never liked it so I was Dad's fishing buddy. He hated it when I caught the "big one!" When my son was small, he and I spent a lot of time at the lake and he's a fair to middling fisherman. Now that we've got little Caleb, he loves to go fishing with Granny. He caught a "little" catfish, but had to let it go back to it's "mommy" and grow up. Granny sold her boat, so we just fish off the bank (he has a short attention span, so it saves putting the boat in and out of the water). Every day when he comes to Granny's he asks, "Is it too hot to go fishing today?" Never got into bass fishing -- I like bream (fish with crickets) and catfish. Glad you're having fun with your grandson, Jean. They just grow up so fast...... Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Fishin' Tale (Not CH) Post by Melissa on Jul 25th, 2006, 8:25am Crawlers & chartruse(sp) Mister Twisters. I've caught about everything using just the two baits. That is AWESOME about the bass Jean! When Eli gets in school, I'm going to make it a point to go out fishing by myself again like I used to when Lily was small and then in school. Right now, fishing for Eli is swirling his Spongebob pole around in the water for 2 hours. ::) We've tried having bait on his line with a REAL HOOK, but that doesn't work well with him as he gets pissed when he can't cast his "bopper" out far enough and then has problems getting the reeling motion down correctly. For some reason his bopper hits all of us in the head and then gets wrapped around the steering wheel, other poles, the dogs legs and my purse. He also likes squish worms and then to stick them down the holes that hold our seat poles. Ah well, there's always ice fishing. ;;D |

Title: Re: Fishin' Tale (Not CH) Post by Peppermint on Jul 26th, 2006, 9:09am You know Jean, I love this sort of thing. I watched a bass fishing tournament on T.V. Never knew it was that exciting. But where the heck ya go fishin' up here? It's one helluva trip to do it, unless you go to Sheepsheadbay and pay a pretty penny to get on a boat. 'sides that, the only thing I caught off Sheepshead Bay was.... Squid. ::) and it was a little one. and they used it for bait. I think my daughter has the right idea about getting the hell outta here sometimes. Fishin' sounds like a memory maker. Pep |

It's the best memories, Pep. :-* Y'all have lots of freshwater lakes in NY. That's where ya need to go. Where you caught the squid?? that was salt water. Check around...find a lake and take your daughter fishin'. Just a cheap fishin' pole will work....some places down here in Texas, you can rent the stuff you need. Most of these places are like catfish farms....you rent the stuff and fish at the same place. These are great places to go with a kid. Their guaranteed to catch a fish. Jean |

That is how I became my son's queen. Don't know nothing about fishing but got meself a hand line, sat with him on the pier, hooked on some poloni(boloni, I believe in your parts of the world ;)) and caught us some anonymous sea creature that liked the taste of preserved meat. I must say that I also had the time of my life. Fly fishing...well, I do not know about that one, lots of line to get tangled in... not very ambidextrous if you catch my drift. ::) |
