Title: It has to be done...
Post by Donna_D. on Jul 24th, 2006, 9:16pm
I made a HUGE decision in my life today.  As of Friday, I am quitting my job...and no, I don't have another lined up...YET.

Many of you who have known me over the last three years know how my boss has a habit of not paying me on time.  I have had a belly full for quite awhile now, but needed to get through convention to insure I had the time off to attend.

Since I have been back from convention, things have gotten worse..much worse.  Today was the final insult.

I went into her office to discuss getting paid.  My "boss" then proceeded to ATTEMPT to belittle me into what I can only call "submission".  She had the NERVE to tell me that if it weren't for her I would not have made it through the last two years and that SHE was the only reason I was making it today.  THEN...this is the kicker... she told me that she felt I had not changed one bit since I left my ex and that I was still basically a doormat for people to walk upon!!  It was in that moment of clarity that I realized...the ONLY person walking on me in my life now....IS HER!!!!!!!!!!

SO, short story long...I am doing something I have never done before.  I am quitting one job without first having another lined up.  I do have a good lead on a temp service where I can get work as early as next week and that should tide me over until I can get the job I WANT instead of just ANY job.

I returned from convention, envigorated and empowered and feeling pretty damn good about life and I will be DAMNED if she is going to try to rob me of that by making me feel inferior.

Those of you who REALLY know me, know why I am posting this...No looking back now.

Thanks for the ear and send some "find a good job quick" vibes my direction. (I have already applied for a few that I would love to have, I am just waiting on some callbacks...so I have faith in me and my skill set that it won't be long before I post about my new position and how happy I finally am)

Sometimes we just have to do what we have to do and damn the consequences.

I'm sure you didn't just snap your fingers and make this decision.  It sounds like you've been giving it some thought for quite a while.  Where I'm from - what happened to you would be considered constructive dismissal and you'd have a good case for the Courts!

Good luck in finding what you're looking for.  You have a lot to offer a prospective employer and I'll bet you will have a new job before you know it.

Please keep us posted.

I will tell you, you did a great job as president of OUCH.  Since you took that job, I have seen a significant improvement in participation, the web site, the newsletter and now what looks like a great convention.  It's the result of a good team but it takes a good leader to facilitate and allow it to happen.  I hope you find a great job that allows you to fulfill your obvious potential and rewards you for it.  Please go into the interviews with the confidence that they would be lucky to have you.  I mean this sincerely.  Good luck.

You go, girl!

I did this once. Quit a job as director of copyrights at a music publisher because the president was asking me to ignore certain details of writers' and arrangers' contracts in order to save the company money. I quit on the spot without anything else lined up. Here's the encouraging part: I was working full-time in a completely different field within 2 weeks.

You can do that to, Donna. Talented people like you don't stay dormant very long. Pat and I will be having good thoughts for you.

Knock 'em dead,

Bill

And I do too. Does she not know that she had the President of OUCH working for her? You are an amazing woman Donna and I am glad you walked out on her. I will be anxious to hear about your new job and how happy you are with it.

Donna,

I think what you did was indeed admirable. My sister just did the same thing a few months ago after working a job for over 30 years.

Her health was more important than putting up with all the BS they dished out there. Stress was getting to her and we were hating who she had become.

So, I think you've made a wise choice and applaud your courage.

Keep us posted and know we're behind you.

hugs,
EDNA

For anyone else who is curious, it was about a year ago that I temporarily had a "new boss"...I started working for a DME company called Atlas Providers that officed with my "old" boss to save money and I was actually getting paid on a regular basis for a while.  Then my old boss basically railroaded the "new" boss out of there and the guy I was working for literally walked away from the business and signed over all interests to my "old" boss who then once again became my "new" boss.  Atlas Providers officially closed it's doors on 01/01/2006 and that is when the paychecks started bouncing again.

Lots of people who have kept up with me through PM's and phone calls will tell you the same.

Hope that explains it all....

And to the person who PM'd me regarding this...hope that satisfies your curiosity.

Thank you all for your kind words of support.  I just completed my resumee and plan to hit the phones tomorrow and start networking for a new position.

Good luck Donna, any employer will be lucky to have you and that low down bottom feeder will be hard pushed to replace you too which is even sweeter!
One thing I would urge you to do is see if you have any legal recourse as it sounds awfully like constructive dismissal to me as well as to Carole  [smiley=hug.gif]
Love you lots hon

Congratulations DD, for taking this step. I'm not sure what the unemployment laws are like in Texas, but it seems to me you may have some recourse to collect it while looking for a new job. I'm sure they would be very interested in hearing about you not getting paid. So would the local labor board.

You are very talented, and I'm sure you will have no problems finding another position in no time. I'm sure you will have plenty of offers, so you can pick the best one for you. Good luck!

Donna way to go standing up for yourself, I think that most of us have had a boss we hated and that treated us poorly and made going to work a real challenge. My last job while I had a good boss really sucked and I hated going to work.
I sat back one day and looked at all my past jobs and zeroed in on the ones that I truly was happy at and realized that the jobs I liked the best was when I was helping people, I am a computer guy and have had jobs working for hospitals and those I found where the most rewarding since I was keeping the systems the doctors use to help people up and running. Now I am working for a medical research center at Stanford University and loving the fact that I am helping people that are trying to help people on a global scale.
So my advice to you is search your past and decide on what jobs made you feel the most fulfilled and zero in on that job market, you work so many hours in your life and doing it in an unfulfilling job is not the way to go. My wife is in a job she hates but wont leave until the kids are out of school since her benefits are really good but I hate to see her so unhappy with her job, so my wish to you is that you find a job in the field you want and that it be a fulfilling job that truly makes you happy.

Best wishes and good job hunting vibes coming your way.

Matt

Tom, don't get me started.  This woman (not you DD), has got cojones the size of my head.  THe NERVE.

DD, you have a lot of talent, and think on you're feet, even when you're sitting.   ;;D  I'm glad you are motivated to get the hell out of there, people like that leech onto someone like you and sooner or later suck the life outta them.  You really should take her ass to the cleaners, after all the crap she's managed to squeeze by you.

Good move D.  Just do your best, there'll be no stopping you.

Rock on woman [smiley=headbanger.gif]
