It turns out that wasn't true. A nurse gave her a spinal block medicine in her iv instead of pennicillian and she died less than an hr latter and now the hospital is looking at making lots of changes and is in jeapordy of loosing its liscence. Please read the article and realize it is important to question what meds you are getting. I hope they sue and get enough money to raise her son that was born. St. Mary's Admits Error in Teen's Death Hospital Admits Error in Teen Death Updated: 7:22 PM Jul 21, 2006 St. Mary's Hospital says it made a mistake that led to the death of a 16-year-old girl, and the death investigation has led to numerous violations. The Department of Health and Family Services found three violations in the wake of Jasmine Gant's death, and that could lead to severe consequences for the hospital. Jasmine died on July 5, after going to the hospital to have her baby. Doctors had planned to induce labor, but the state's investigation showed she was given Epidural through an IV instead of Penicillin. The hospital released this statement today "while both internal and external investigations are still ongoing, we have determined that medication intended to be administered as epidural anesthetic was mistakenly administered intravenously." According to a summary of the investigation provided by the department of Health and Family Services, a registered nurse gave Jasmine the I-V at 11:45 am. She was pronounced dead at 12:20 pm. An investigation by the State Department of Health and Human Services finds the three violations by the hospital. The most serious violation: hospital staff didn't follow protocol to make sure the correct medication was given to Gant. Other violations include no care plans for women in labor, and failing to have medicine properly locked up. NBC15 talked to the Department of Health and Family services Friday afternoon. A spokesperson says the state cannot fine St. Mary's for these violations. What the state can do is suspend new admissions, or revoke the license of the hospital. And, on a federal level, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Management calls the nursing services deficiencies a case of "immediate jeopardy", meaning the actions caused the death of a patient. CMS can terminate Medicare and Medicaid funding if problems aren't corrected by an August 5th deadline. In this afternoon's statement from St. Mary's, President Frank Byrne states, "We continue to work with the state to ensure those issues are resolved. St. Mary's is committed to providing the highest quality patient care in a safe environment." So the next step is for St. Mary's to submit a plan of action to the federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services by August 5th, and to the state department of Health and Family Services within 10 days. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services says it expects a "plan of correction" from St. Mary's sometime next week. The state says St. Mary's must be in full compliance by September 11th. |

I am still praying for the child who will never know it's mother and for the family that lost this young woman in their lives. Unfortunately, bad mistakes get made. Let's just hope the proper authorities and the courts can find some form of restitution that may ease the pain for this family in the long run. DD |
