Title: Hannah was in the ER UPDATE 7/28/06 Post by E-Double on Jul 21st, 2006, 4:13pm At 1am, Joanna noticed she had alot of blood in her stool. it was really bad, so we took her to schneiders childrens hospital. they had to draw blood and do xrays. they ruled out a fisher (sp?). thank goodness all the tests came back okay, so they are thinking she may have a milk protein allergy, but they dont want us to switch formulas yet. they are also testing the stool for some kind of bacteria. it was really scary for me and Jo . we had to restrain her and she was crying and it broke my heart. it su*cks seeing your child in pain and there is nothing you can do for it. |

Title: Re: Hannah was in the ER this morning Post by Lizzie2 on Jul 21st, 2006, 4:48pm Awww honey I'm sorry you guys had to go through this. Does your pediatrician have an after-hours emergency line or a doctor on call at nighttime? The only reason I'm asking is that it's always a good idea to give them a call, if you can, before going to the ER. First of all, that alerts them that you are going to the ER and it also is another sounding board to maybe save yourself the visit or not. Not saying that you didn't need to be there - that's not what I'm saying at all. But if they had decided that they could see her first thing in the morning and that would be safe enough, then it would have saved all of you the hassle of going down... BUT - I can't stress this enough that I don't want you to take that the wrong way - it's GOOD that you went and that you got the help you needed for her! A fissure is actually just a little break in the skin (almost like a cut) around her anus (forgive my terminology...I'm a nurse) that is sometimes from irritation from having so many bowel movements and also wearing a diaper all the time. Fissures are very common and are generally the number 1 reason you'd find blood in a baby's diaper. You'd be able to see an area of redness or breakdown there, however, which I guess is how they ruled it out. To treat a fissure, most people use desitin or zinc oxide or A&D ointment....proshield and triple paste work for really BAD skin breakdown, but I wouldn't move to those until the peds said that was the best move. But anyways...that's for the future since you said they ruled it out, which means that wasn't the cause. I'm glad they also ruled out any other major things like obstruction, which is why they do the xray. That's a very good thing to rule out!!! Keep us posted on what you find out. I know it was a horrible experience because I see parents going through the terror of lack of control when their child is hurting every day. We don't ask parents to hold their children down because we're used to working with babies whereas the ER is not. I would never want a parent to hold their child still in the crib while I drew labs or whatever. But I guess they go with the mentality that you being there will provide comfort.... Mostly I feel bad for you having to go through this entire thing and I hope that Hannah is okay!! Please let us know what they find out because I know I'll be sitting here worrying away until you do!!! Love and hugs, Carrie :) |

Title: Re: Hannah was in the ER this morning Post by JeffB on Jul 21st, 2006, 4:52pm When my girl was about 3 she had a bad flu, we took her in and between her barfing on me then her mom barfing from all the barfing going on I was at my wits end. Of course thats until they took her in a room, taped a piece of paper over the door window so I couldn't see them put an IV in her arm, they finally let me in after beating the hell out of the door. I can still see her crying eyes looking at me in terror.... :( I guess that why whenever she's sick she won't leave my side, and pretty much shuns the ex wife. ;) Again good luck!!!!!!!!!! |

There's nothing worse than that helpless feeling especially when the little ones aren't able to tell you what hurts or what's causing a problem. I'd love to tell you this will be a one off time, but I expect that all the parents out there will tell you that it's part and parcel of having the little darlins. Title: Re: Hannah was in the ER.... UPDATED Post by E-Double on Jul 21st, 2006, 9:53pm Thanks everyone!!!! It certainly was/is an emotional day/eve...... We got her home and then I had to rush back to the children's hospital some 30 miles away to bring them her latest bloody diaper for a test of Clostridium difficile toxin because her pediatrician was unable to do that specific test. Carrie, We did call the docs emergency # b/c it wasn't just blood in the stool or like we may find on paper (sorry for the graphics) which is telling of a fissure.......it was running out her tush.....that is what made us call and what made the dr's send us to the ER of Schnieder's Children's hospital ( I'm actually employed by the same hospital healthcare system NSLIJHS) We should know results tomorrow and hopefully it is just allergy.......fingers crossed. Love you all!!!!!!!!! Eric |

Title: Re: Hannah was in the ER this morning Post by lilboo on Jul 21st, 2006, 11:03pm Hi I hope evrything turns out ok. When I read you post it reminded me of what happened to my son, he had blood in his stools, it was to the point where he had nothing but runny blood and clots coming out, he had to have several blood transfusions and after three days and several tests they found out he had diverticulitus. This is from Web MD: Diverticular bleeding is a condition in which pouches (diverticula) that have formed in the wall of the large intestine (colon) bleed. Bleeding into the colon occurs when a perforation, or hole, develops between one of these pouches and a blood vessel. Sometimes a person with diverticular bleeding will have sudden, severe bleeding from the rectum. Bleeding often will stop on its own. If it does not, treatment may be needed to stop the bleeding and to replace lost blood. In my sons case he had to have surgery to have the pouch removed and closed up. I pray everything works out for you. Kathy |

Title: Re: Hannah was in the ER this morning Post by LeLimey on Jul 23rd, 2006, 5:01pm Eric I didn't know what it was so I looked it up. It said that this is a bacteria thats always in your gut and that normally your "good bacteria keep this "bad" one under control. However when you take an antibiotic your good bacteria are reduced and unless the antibiotic kills off this one too it will flourish. It is treatable though with a couple of special antibiotics so fingers crossed they can get our princess on them ASAP. Its certainly nothing for either you or poor Jo to feel guilty about. I know you do, I know you will, all us parents are the same on that score but truly, these things happen :-* Hannah will be fine, this can be treated, milk allergies are easy to solve and she will continue to grow, thrive and capture more hearts every day. Just like her lovely mummy and daddy do! We love you all and we're all with you in spirit lots of love Helen xxx |

Title: Re: Hannah was in the ER this morning Post by E-Double on Jul 24th, 2006, 8:11pm We were in ER all night again........she appeared to me to be dehydrated and lethargic and I didn't quite like how she was behaving........ Turned out I was right. She was cathaderized ( I wanted to kill the nurse cuz she couldn't get it) and hooked up to IV's, we were in all night. They ran some more tests and though she has the toxin, it has not broken the blood barrier thank god which pretty much means that she will be in pain but it will not travel to heart. We saw a ped. gastro this morning and she is scheduled for a sigmoidoscopy tomorrow morning. She may have some other stuff going on but they feel we are kinda safe. They released her and fingers crossed! Luv to all and thanks! E http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b6d905b3127cce8b118c94ff0900000025113QasWrlwx0 |

Title: Re: Hannah was in the ER UPDATE 7/24/06 Post by rickyshot on Jul 24th, 2006, 10:22pm I just finished praying for your precious Hannah. What an ordeal. You were smart to take her to ER. God Jonny I know the feeling you went through too. My oldest son had menengitis when he was 15 months old and had a grand mal seizure. he was comatose for 24 hours. I was told when asked what are his chances and I quote Ms. Caldwell do you believe in prayer? I vividly remember being alone in the ER and watching them tying my baby down for the spinal and closing the door. OMG. :'( :'( I can't stand that memory. Praise God He is 24 and about to give me my first grandbaby. He is also my most religious child. He has no memory of his ordeal but definitely touched by God. Eric Hang in there. The pic is precious. Keep us posted. |

Dairy allergies and gluten problems go hand in hand. Google milk protein allergies and gluten sensity and you'll find a bit of info out. You can also check out Enterolab.com, they have reliable testing and a lot of very good info. (I do not know any of the people at enterolab personally, nor do I get any money from their testing.) Title: Re: Hannah was in the ER UPDATE 7/25/06 Post by E-Double on Jul 27th, 2006, 3:57am Finally got her back to sleep....... No update until Friday as far as results of biopsy. We have had to change her food once again. This stuff is perscription formula and is going to be a fotune. Where specialized formula like Nutrmagin or alamentil costs around $40-50 per case. Elecare is $200+ I hope insurance will pick up some of it Thank you all!!!!!! :-* |

Title: Re: Hannah was in the ER UPDATE 7/28/06 Post by E-Double on Jul 28th, 2006, 4:32pm Sometimes answers bring more questions. Biopsy fine! This means nothing wrong with instestines nor a Milk protien allergy. However some can have allergy without it showing up in biopsy [smiley=huh.gif] Why keep us not knowing for so long without at least telling us what looking for. Blood in stool can be a symptom of GER (acid reflux) This is what we suggested to pediatrician prior to the bleeding which she is still doing........... Now continue with $$$$$ formula and pserscription for reflux! F-en docs! When ya suggest something you get poo -poohed no pun lol until something severe occurs then they send ya for treatment and emergency and send ya into massive anxiety when it pretty much turns out to be what to nervous but educated parents suggested to begin with >:( Atleast she will be ok!!! :) Miserable but apparently ok! Thank you all for supporting me and my family! I love ya! Eric and Joanna and now we shall call her baby Venom |

No Enfacare, isomil, prosobee, pregestamil or a few others I could name? I know you've tried a lot, but Elecare is still a jump over some other alternatives....especially when they aren't sure of the exact allergy. Did her PKU come back fine? There are several others that are easier to come by and cheaper than elecare. Just because she tried Lactofree doesn't mean that isomil or prosobee wouldn't work...those are both soy based, which means lactofree, but lactofree is still milk based with just the lactose removed... Nutramagin is usually a goodie - sorry that one didn't work... I'd have to go digging to find names on some of this stuff, but if you want, I can ask our Ross rep for coupons or any deals he can help with for the Elecare. Just say the word, and I'll give him a call Monday... Hugz, Carrie |

Agreed...that can do it, too. Eric - how fast were the changes? I had one today that was on BM plus HMF and had to give him formula 3 times today and he was a disaster after that...I sure as hell hope that giving him BM with HMF for the next 24 hours will return his gut to where it was before... Feeding intolerances are sooooo common and yet soooooo frustrating... Hugz again |

Title: Re: Hannah was in the ER UPDATE 7/28/06 Post by E-Double on Jul 28th, 2006, 10:33pm only quick change that was not done systematically was the new one. many you mntion are comparable to what she was on, with exception to soy. believe me we researched and i work with alln the docs too. I had my early freakout over hannah during her first week home but have been chill and levelheaded since. |
