Post by Melissa on Jul 12th, 2006, 3:47pm
I don't want to go!  It's for a whole week from Aug. 7th to Aug. 11th.  Who here has served before?  How many hours a day were you in court for??

this sucks!!!

Surefire way to get out of it - Tell 'em, "The cops arrested him, right? He must be guilty." Extreme prejudice, but no racism, sexism, etc.

My wife has to go in a week, but she enjoys doing her civic duty. This will be her third time. She was excused the first time because she was a stay-at-home mom to our then 3-year-old. She was dismissed the second time because they got enough of what they needed before they got to her. Time commitment is tough to call. Depends on what number you draw.

Were you just summoned or actually picked for a trial?

If it is only a summon, well the last time, I was there for 1 and a half days then they let me go.

Spent a week reporting to court in San Jose,Ca. For 5 days about 8 hours a day and wasn't picked. Picked again to report to Oaklands Court (Alameda County), had to show up for about 6 hours then released.
Bumming for you!

They allow you to do that?  I have no one to watch Eli for me while I'd be gone except for Lily (11yrs old), and I really don't think that's fair to her.

Not only that, but I think that is the week of Jesse's vacation (not sure if it's then or the week after), so we'd be going out of town anyway.

I don't know what to do...  Guess I'll talk it over with Jesse. :-/

They will let you off because of child care.  Call the number and talk to them.  See what you need. Usually fax a letter with your Drivers License number and explaination faxed to them and you are good.

It's a summons.  It says that each of those days for that week is the list of possible jury trial dates for my term.  Says if I need to postpone it, I gotta request it before July 24th.

If I can go, it gives a number that I'm supposed to call after 6pm on the evening before each of those dates to see if there will be a trial.

Cripes, this is all making me nervous.  I always had a feeling that if I was picked for jury duty, it'd be some long drawn out case of murder or something. :-/

Hun they called about 100 people here and the fist day no one went into even be interevirewed.  Then day 2 after 2 hours they sent like 75 of us home.

But I'm serious, call them and tell them that you are a stay at home mom of a 3 yr old and that you have no day care. I bet anything they will tell you to send in something saying that and go from there.

Ok cool.  I'll do that then!  It'd be different if the kids were both in school, as I wouldn't hesitate to go then, but now is just not a good time.

Thanks Tia!!

Mel, I would love to do jury duty! Beats the hell out of being the defendant :)

You can always do what my wife did and tell them that your brother did hard time for three different crimes! Of course with her brother it's true ::)

I just spoke with the lady at the courthouse.  They don't accept not having childcare as a reason. :(   I was able though, to postpone it for the week of Nov. 6th through the 10th.  At least Lily will be in school and there's nothing going on that week.  I'll hit up my sister-in-law to watch Eli for me.

I don't know why, but I have a bad, bad feeling about all of this. [smiley=frown.gif]

I’ve been summoned 3 times. Been released and back home by noon each time.Never even reached the interview.
Here you have to call the night before you are to report to be sure you will be needed. They ask if there is any reason you cannot serve. I always told them no and I actually wanted to serve. No such luck.
What I don’t get is why me? Why was I let go? I wanted to be there. I’ve never served on a jury and thought it would be a new learning experience. But nope, told to go home. With my job I could have all the time needed for serve. I would get full pay while serving. Each time there was at least 100 people there. I’d say for at least 70 of them it was a hardship. Single mothers that had to find child care. People that did not get paid for the time off work. Many with no transportation and had to bum a ride or take bus after bus to get to the courthouse.
I don’t get it.
Now that I don't have a job I don't want to serve. It'll cut into my sitting time and piddeling away the days.
Gotta go........Days of Our Lives is coming on.  ::)

Just tell them you watch CSI, they will excuse you because they believe that CSI fans have a preconceived notion regarding evidentiary chains and DNA evidence ;)

Mel, I find the judicial system fascinating.err, flawed, but that's beside the point.
I've been called 4 times. first, I was working at the Elementary School level.....my kids needed me......2nd time, I took it. A fascinating action against Six Flags Magic Mtn, a woman who refused to keep her seatbelt on during a ride was injured....and suing for a LOT.hehehe...didnt work......3rd time, I waited in the Jurors' room all day..they never called us. 4th time, the very first day I called in for an assignment, they cancelled us all.........
I hope they call me again.....

They dont accept no daycare as a reason?!?!
Sounds to me like they want you to bring your kids with you.

Its no big deal Mel, I have done jury duty before.  Around here though, they only call you for a day.  If you end up getting picked for a trial that will take a long time, you just have to stay.
It was actually kind of fun.  They even paid me $10 for missing a day's work and driving all the way over there.

Hmm... I will never have to worry about that. Our justice system is bit different. But if somebody would call me in a bad time, I'd say that do they mind if I write a book/movie/episode about it... ;;D

But it would be kind of cool to follow some big case in a jury... Ok, I've watched too many episodes of Perry Mason, Columbo, CSI, Murder She Wrote, Diagnosis:Murder, Matlock...etc.

I've been summoned three times, and interviewed for a jury twice.  When they asked, "Are you acquainted with the arresting officer?," I answered "yes" both times.  I was never put on a jury.  Helps to know half the cops in town.

Chances are good you'll skate anyway.

Best,

George

I've been called twice.  Both times I sat around reading books for two days and was never even called for an interview.  Very relaxing.   :)

I can't believe they wouldn't excuse you for a young child. That's worked for years.

Since I'm a chronic CHer, I don't have any trouble getting out of it.

I've been called a lot of times and have served on a few juries. It's not that bad - just a lot of sitting and keeping quiet. Got called on a murder trial one time (they were asking for the death penalty). A couple of days into it - gee they discovered a "voice" tape that "proved" the guy wasn't the one. Apparently it had been laying around the police station for 8 months while they kept this guy in jail. I think he ended up sueing everyone.

Just be glad it's not a federal grand jury -- you could be tied up for months.

Hugs BD

This doesn't work in NJ. Here it only lasts usually for two days, that is if you don't get picked, and the days themselves could be over by or even before lunch. It really isn't that bad, and I think it would be kind of neat to get picked and actually participate. Don't sweat it, if you absolutely don't want to do it, you almost most certainly will get picked, so go in with a positive attitude and you will go home early. Best part is if you go, it will be two years before you have to worry about possibly doing it again.

They never call me. I believe it has to do with not having a drivers license. Now that I have a New York non-driver ID, I wonder....but then I do have seizures.

I was asked to testify in a civil thing for a relative but I was let go. It might have been interesting though.
