Title: If you are ever in Boston...
Post by Jonny on Jul 11th, 2006, 6:42pm
Never drive through the big dig tunnels alone, always have a spotter with you to watch for falling ceiling slabs of concrete (3 tons each)

You have been warned!!!!

This is Mass, the land that let Ted Kennedy walk on a murder charge.

The blame game starts now, nothing MORE, nothing LESS!

I see, we here in California suffer the same affliction, we also had a piece of the Bay Bridge fall a year or so ago. And now they want to make ranchers pay for their cows farts, seems to adding to the global warming. And just wait if Arnold gets outed and we have Angeledes, he's already said he's gonna tax everything under the sun here.

I dont know if you know it, Jeff.......the big dig was paid for 60% by federal dollars, that means you and everyone in this country has been paying for these killer tunnels for the last 20 years.

We that live here knew it was just a matter of time before someone died.

No one up the chain gives a fuck, I have to go through that very tunnel to get to the airport Thursday.

Wish me luck....LOL

Jonny, at least your state isn't known for the highest taxes in the country.  Most of our politicians think NYS stops at the Westchester Co. line.

Really?.....If you figure in all the taxes that have been paid in for this big dig by the people in this country, we are the biggest tax grab of the country.

Now, one is dead.....there will be many more. I know many, many dudes that worked this dig and they say that shit is going to happen, and people will be killed.

Things they knew were not right but told "Do it, we are behind schedule"

It sucks that city inspectors mandated how it was to be built, and they also inspected it after it was built to see if it was to code.
Now that it failed, the construction dudes are to blame?

That is the opposite of what should happen.  Once the city inspected and approved the tunnels, it should have released the contractors from any liability.

I honestly believe that we all have a number, and when its called...............................its called, your going thats all there is to it.

The odds of her being in that car, in that lane, in that seat, going through that tunnel at 75 mph and having a cieling collapse on top of you and not the person next to you is 1 in 100 gajilion.

It was her time, I can't explain it any other way.

When an engineer signs off on a design, he is professionally and legal liable for that design. The same standards should be applied to the builders and the inspectors.

You know Sean when it is my time to go I hope it is something like that! At least Linda can get rich on the lawsuit, but someones head needs to roll for this!

A friend of ours worked on the recent rebuild of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel  and they ran into the same "We are behind and over budget" bull-crap. The general contractor on that job told the powers that be "tough shit" and went on to finish the thing right! Over budget and 2 yrs. late, but I won't sweat crossing it now.

As of an hour ago they have found 60 more slabs that show signs of stress in that west bound section. they havent even started looking in the east bound section yet.

No tunnel of death for me tomorrow, Ill be taking the Tobin bridge to the airport.

Yeah, and we are not even talking about the thousands upon thousands of water leaks in two other tunnels. then theres the fireproofing falling onto cars causing damage and car accidents.

The water leaks are so bad it turns one tunnel into a skating rink in the winter, oh sure they try to sand the shit out of it, but WTF?!!!!

Anyone want the convention to be in Boston?.....LMAO ;;D

No, bro, I disagree.
The inspectors are there to make sure the builders did it according to spec.  The builders dont have the freedom to decide how they are gonna get things done, they are told what to do.

Here in Portland, there is a huge problem with stucco siding.  The builders kept telling the inspectors moisture would get in if they did it they way it was mandated, but the inspectors (code) wouldnt budge.  Now, 7 years later, the builders are filing bankruptcy because they are getting sued left and right.  Here too, the builders dont have the freedom to do things as they see fit, they MUST follow the orders of the state or city code.

With the big dig tunnels, the whole reason us taxpayers pay for inspectors is to make sure the builders did things according to spec.  Whoever came up with the spec should be liable.....i think.

you dont think so, Flo?

I would say so. Its been declared a crime scene.

No your not. Eastbound to Logan is closed indefinitely.

Quote:
Mumbles is going to have a lot to answer to though,

No he dont. The tunnel was planned and built under the direction of the Turnpike Authority. Nothing to do with the city.

Quote:

The inspectors were all Ma employees paid for by Ma. residents.

I drive through the primary tunnel at least twice day. Last Friday it took me an hour and a half to travel through it. Cant wait till they start laying tons of sod on top of it for the greenway. The tunnel project was all about land value, not traffic engineering and certainly not safety.

Its all going to come down to the deepest pockets. My guess and its only a guess, is that it'll be settled out of court for a 7 or 8 digit figure by the insurance company's. The company that built that portion of the Big Swig as its known up here, went bankrupt on the project and the Bonding Company finished all of its incomplete work.

All in all, its a tradgedy to say the least.
