Title: My son is now a Marine! Post by Karla on Jun 21st, 2006, 10:58am My 17 year old son was sworn in yesterday as a US Marine. He went to Milwaukee to verify paperwork from his first trip down there and then was sworn in. He signed up for 8 years. 4 active 4 inactive. Right now since he is just leaving his junior year of HS and entering his SR year of HS he will start out with one year of inactive duty. According to his contract and what they said his position will be clerical. His desire is clerk of courts. He wants to be an attorney. They promised him they would pay for his education for law school. He dreams big. He realizes that he could by chance end up in artillary or grunt but its not likely. I hate the thought of the nation being in war and him enlisting but I know it is what I would have done at his age also except I would have gone in the Air Force. His Dad was a Marine so he wants to follow his steps. He thinks the war will be ending in a year or two. I said by then we will be at war with Iran and Korea also. He don't believe me. I think we made a mistake by having zero tv in the house while the boys grew up. He has not had the war in his face every day in the news for the last few years. I think that may have left him with a rosy picture of it. Please keep him in your thoughts. His name is Christopher. Thanks. |

Title: Re: My son is now a Marine! Post by Mattrf on Jun 21st, 2006, 11:14am You should be proud of your son, there are far too few these days that feel patriotic and are willing to serve there country and protect the rest of us including those that seem to hate being American some times. Tell your son thank you for all of us, it is a great thing he is doing. |

Title: Re: My son is now a Marine! Post by Richr8 on Jun 21st, 2006, 1:06pm That's wonderful. I know you must be proud, but at the same time very concerned for his future assignments and welfare. I am facing a similar possibility with one of my twin boys. He has been a little warfighter at heart since he could walk. I never discouraged him, but often hoped he would discover another career along the way only because I fear as all parents do, for his safety. Well, he'll be eighteen on August 3rd and I know he has already ben to the recruiter, but has no firm plans at this time. I'll support him in his decision and join the thousands of proud parents who's offspring are patriotic and proud of their heritage enough to serve. I did. "Semper Fidelis" |

Title: Re: My son is now a Marine! Post by Tiannia on Jun 21st, 2006, 2:38pm Karla, you did not do anything wrong by not having tv. I dont think that kids that see it everyday have a clear picture of what war is either. My hisband was over there for Desert Storm. He was in Panama as well. You see bits and pieces on the news but not what the live is really about. You ahve done good. Be proud of him and support him as you have always done. Shaun says that as long as it is in his contract then he is ok. Unless we hit national emergency, there should be nothing that will take him to the front lines. Christopher, you make us proud. Tia |

Title: Re: My son is now a Marine! Post by Melissa on Jun 21st, 2006, 11:36pm Karla, my 3rd brother-in-law leaves for MCRD on July 29th(I think). And I thought the 1st two were hard!! I am going to miss Matt to bits and just know I'm going to ball my ass off at the airport. :'( I am surprised to see that he already has an assignment before even going through boot camp? How did that happen? My brother-in-law Dan served his 4 years and was a Forward Observer. Right now my brother-in-law Mike, who's home on leave for Dan's wedding, is an Embassy Guard stationed in Albania (he's on his second 4 years + 1 more for his bonus). Neither of them knew what they'd be assigned to until they got through boot camp. Anyway, tell him I said thank you! :)mel |

Title: Re: My son is now a Marine! Post by Kirk on Jun 22nd, 2006, 2:12am Not to worry Karla. The Marines like their people educated. He will be kept informed. More than likely better than you. Atleast I knew more about Viet Nam than my parents did by a long shot. Be proud of the young man. He'll do well. |
