Title: Al Asad Airbase
Post by chewy on Jun 19th, 2006, 9:56pm
I recieved this email today from El Asad Airbase.

On behalf of the troops here at Al Asad Air Base, THANKS!! I am deeply
moved by your generosity. The items have been arriving, and we are so grateful.
I take the goods to the Chaplain's office for distribution. They are usually
very good at sending thank-you notes, but I wanted to put in my personal
gratitude.

I am not ashamed to say that I have wept, when I get emails from Masonic lodges
in the USA offering to help these troops.  These young men and women, work 12
hours shifts in blazing heat, fighting dust, flies, and boredom. If they are
lucky, they can take a 3-minute shower after they are off duty. They should not
have to stand in line for an hour to get a cake of soap.

We are especially grateful for the DVDs. There is no base movie theater here, so
the DVDs are fabulous. These young troops, America's finest sons and daughters,
need the chance to relax in their limited off-duty time. I myself, am amazed at
how high morale is here. These fighting men and women believe in what they are
doing. I am honored to help provide computer services, and I am not fit to wipe
their shoes.

Your generosity is in the finest traditions of Freemasonry. You are a credit to
the craft.

Masonically,

Charles E. Martin, UNISYS Field Service Engineer

So, are you a Mason? Or is this a hoax, a mass e-mail? If you are, it's a nice thank you. If not, ???

Well, good on you guys! My dad was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner. I'll have to see if they're organizing anything here locally so I can contribute.

Keep up the good work!

Sounds like some Irish Spring would be a good bet too.

Good on you Don.  Amazingly, toilet paper and soap are often some of the most appreciated things in a new theatre (military term not movie term).

DVD's save their sanity.

Organize a post card drive from a local school, letters are still suspect, but post cards are often a good alternative.

When the troops are over there, getting a package in the mail is one of the best things in the world.  Getting a package from a stranger that says I support you, is one of the most emotional.

This is whats been happening weekly with my Masonic Lodge:

I have been sending about 30 to 40 pounds of various things, soap, sun lotion, socks, candy, ping pong balls, vitamin C, antacid tabs, shampoo etc. I have already sent about 200 DVDs(not those kinds). I have a
shipment going out Wednesday, it's children's books and frizbees. I usually ship every Wednesday.
