Title: Adopt a pet from the animal shelter Post by Charlotte on Jun 14th, 2006, 8:22pm That was one thing in the challenge thread. I adopted a 5 year old cat on Superbowl Sunday. Her person had gone to the nursing home and was never coming out. She had been in kitty jail for 10 days and was so depressed she didn't even move. I knew she wouldn't make it much longer so I adopted her. It is 4 or 5 months later and she has come to life. She looked at peoples feet, not their faces, and she did not know how to play, but she is making great progress. She loves to roll around on the cement slab outside my back door. For the first few weeks, that was the only thing that made her happy. She still misses her person, and she gets mad at me because I'm her substitute, but she has a life and a home. It reminds me of when I was the stepchlid and how I used to get mad at my adopted father. Eventually he became one of my best friends. Charlotte |

Title: Re: Adopt a pet from the animal shelter Post by Melissa on Jun 14th, 2006, 9:48pm Aww Charlotte, how sweet of you to adopt a cat. I wish I could myself, but we can't have cats here due to hubby & son's allergies. I'm glad there are people like you who care! :)mel |

Title: Re: Adopt a pet from the animal shelter Post by BarbaraD on Jun 15th, 2006, 6:41am My grandson and I adopted Homer (right now a 60 pound pitt bull mutt!) from a shelter in Florida after he and his mother and sibblings were put in a trash bag and then in a dumpster. Don't know how his sibblings made out, but Homer has taken over the house, yard, neighbors, etc. We have a 5 pound mini pin who "attacks" Homer (the poor thing thinks he's 9 feet tall and bullet proof) and Homer growls and plays with him but never hurts him. He plays with the cat next door (I really think she's serious, but he thinks she's playing). He wrestles with Caleb (grandson) and never leaves a mark on him. They've bonded big time and we just can't remember life without Homer. These animals from the pound need a home and people just let them die. I agree with Charlotte -- if you're in the market for a pet - ADOPT one. Hugs and doggie kisses BD |

Title: Re: Adopt a pet from the animal shelter Post by chewy on Jun 15th, 2006, 6:47am Neighbor just adopted a little kitten. He's been prowling the new territory lately. He has no fear of Tucker. In fact has decided that the fat little Beagle is a great play toy. Sneaks up behind him, swats his ass, and runs like hell. Tucker sees him around and just groans. I see lifelong buddies in the making. |

Title: Re: Adopt a pet from the animal shelter Post by Margi on Jun 15th, 2006, 10:13am Our young Hops is adopted too, but...shhh, don't tell him. I found him on the shelter's website, he was brought in on my birthday last year. When I went to see him, he literally stuck his paw through the bar, as in handshake mode, and introduced himself and asked me to get him out of there. After a month of turmoil while he educated Barly on living with a male cat (instead of female Moxie that lived to be almost 20 years), the two are now best friends. Hops is a real car guy too - he LOVES anything vehicular and he slept in my truck in the garage last weekend. Just decided he wanted to go camping. Windows were open, garage door was open, his kitty door (milk chute) was open - he totally chose to sleep in Mum's truck. Our neighbour brought him home one day after motorists started honking at her 6 blocks from our house. Hops RODE ON TOP OF HER VAN over to Safeways, the little shit. :o He thinks he's a surfer dude, I guess. Fortunately, he hasn't done that again. He's a cool lil dude though and SO grateful to have been rescued. He gives the nicest two-pawed hugs I've ever had. Rescued animals are forever in your debt. http://pic11.picturetrail.com/VOL361/2036010/3944402/116319671.jpg |

Title: Re: Adopt a pet from the animal shelter Post by JeffB on Jun 15th, 2006, 2:39pm Precious was about to meet her maker in Henderson, Nv when me and my girl found her. I tried to trade the cat for my girlfriend but they wouldn't go for that. So I now have two women who live with me and I love 'em both to death. Never was a cat person, always had dogs growing up but I wouldn't trade my lil fuzzy ball for the world, still looking to trade the girlfriend tho! |
