I posted this under the MySpace topic but it probably should be it’s own.

Are your kids to smart when surfing the net and delete all the temp files and the history so you can’t tell where they have been?

I am an IT guy and on my daughters computer I have made it so in Internet Explorer the general page under tools where you are able to delete all the temp files and the clear the history is no longer there. This way she is unable to clear everything and I can still see what she has been up to on the internet.

I have put together a word doc that walks you through how to do this and how to go view the files so you can see where your child has been surfing and what type of content they have been looking at.

This only works for IE and I have not been able to find a hack for Firefox so if anyone out there knows how to do a similar thing in Firefox please let the rest of us know.

If you would like the file please let me know and I would be glad to email it to you.

Or maybe if DJ wants to post it on the site that would also be cool.

We just created 3 seperate accounts for each of our 3 kids to log onto individually. They are password protected. So that way we can go in a see if there are porn sites in there cashe or history file. They are so ignorant of how dad can tell. But it is enough that after they were all busted once that they never did it again.

Kids can be very resourceful and so are there friends but it is good that you have showed them you watch and that you can bust them, but that first time you go look and all the files are gone, you will be going what the hell! Hint keep an eye on the dates of the files that are cached to make sure they are not going in and deleting just the bad ones and check the recycle bin as well. I tell you this because a week after I gave my daughter a laptop she had already figured out how to set up accounts on it for her and her friends and changed the administrator password. I put a quick end to that but you get my point. [smiley=laugh.gif]

Hey IT, Dude.....I installed Ubuntu Linux and now my Win Xp wont boot up, its in the start menu along with Ubuntu but will not boot (Ubuntu will boot up, but I want my XP back)

Any insight on what I need to do?

Ubuntu - I am what I am because of who we all are - community.

Great to hear a South African native word used internationally. :)

As for the kids surfing the net and what they are looking at.
My methods are maybe very old fashioned but they seem to work.

1. No computer in a child's room
2. All computers in a central, walk through area in the house, so everyone at anytime can see what you are doing.
3. Big Momma is always watching, I'm the last to go to bed.
4. Have less computers than you have kids.

I find cellphones more of a problem. Each child needs one so that I can know where they are and for safety reasons(where are the good old days?) but the messages kids send to each other are hair raising!

I'm with Jas, I keep the computer where anyone can look at anytime. Periodically I would just plop my ass down next to my daughter and see what she was doing. She had a myspace account but dropped on her own because she thought it wasn't a cool place to be.

I also keep the PC in a common area and she has to ask to go on the internet but you can’t keep your eye on them every minute and if you do they think you do not trust them and that is bad for them as well. It sucks you have to walk a fine line to protect your kids but at the same time make them feel you trust them and that they are good kids but hay kids will be kids so you have to do what you have to do.
I trust my daughter completely but that does not mean I don’t keep an eye on her for her own good. Know what I mean?

No, it does nothing.

Im going to try the XP Disk and boot from it and run the repair console. either that or bring it to someone that knows what they are doing....LOL ;;D
