Title: Re: Some pics from Drøbak and Oscarsborg Fortress Post by Kevin_M on Jun 10th, 2006, 6:12pm Sven, That Krupp nameplate, is this the same one? To an extent unprecedented in the history of industry, a corporation had become an integral part of a warlord's apparatus....two months before the invasion of Denmark, Krupp's Copenhagen agent was sending OKW [Oberkommando der Wehrmacht: General Headquarters of the German Armed Forces —WHS] coded information on the Danish armaments establishments. He was working under intense pressure; Hitler's formal directive for the conquest of Scandinavia (Weserübung) was not issued until three weeks later, and when the fleet sailed north at 5:15 a.m. on April 9, 1940, Krupp's representative in Norway was caught off-guard. Fifteen miles south of Oslo, where the fifty-mile Oslo Fjord narrows perceptibly, stood the eighty-five-year-old fortress of Oscarborg. Essen's man in the Norwegian capital had been ordered to send [the] OKW detailed information on the defenders' strongpoints, but in his haste he had overlooked that Oscarborg was armed with ancient 28-cm Krupp cannon. Despite their age they were in superb condition. In a blaze of deadly fire they crippled one heavy cruiser, Lützow, and sank another, Blücher, with a loss of 1,600 seamen and several Gestapo officials who where on their way to proclaim Vidkung Quisling dictator of Norway. |

Title: Re: Some pics from Drøbak and Oscarsborg Fortress Post by Kevin_M on Jun 10th, 2006, 6:48pm Yep, I wondered where the nameplate came from. I found that little history article about Oscarborg and the cannon there, but don't know if it's the same one. And they're still in superb condition. Good job Oscarborg! |

Title: Re: Some pics from Drøbak and Oscarsborg Fortress Post by Charlie on Jun 11th, 2006, 12:35pm Great stuff Svenn. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/photo flower.gif Nice history too. You have to wonder about the German surface navy. It's understandable getting clobbered by the Royal Navy, but it seemed to take a real beating wherever it went most of the time. 8) You gotta love it that you sent the Blucher to the bottom with Krupp weaonry. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/victory.gif http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/svenn.gif Charlie |
