Title: Re: Did anyone see that ?? Post by Redd715 on Jun 5th, 2006, 12:04pm I read an editorial piece yesterday regarding health care in America, pharm-co's and insurance co's. Seeing this just remended me of that reading, how OUCH has tried to get funding/grants/ etc. from the company (being as CH'ers are the folks who keep their profit margins up there). Just seems to me that there are better things to spend their money on. |

I can't disagree with this at all. I'm just saying that I understand WHY they do it. I don't empathize, I simply understand. |

Title: Re: Did anyone see that ?? Post by Mattrf on Jun 5th, 2006, 12:56pm I just find it scary that all the drug companies advertise there medication like there cloths or something. That the medication that is prescribed to you can be swayed by advertising is just wrong, what if the best medication out there was from a small company that did not have the advertising budget to get it’s medication the recognition and there for you never heard of it and neither had your doctor? I know we all see it all the time, at the pharmacy and at the doctors office, the nicely dressed sale person with all the samples in there bag to give them and talk them into prescribing, how many times have you been given the free samples from the doctor? I know we all like the free stuff considering how much we all rack up on pharmacy bills but I just wonder what’s out there that we never heir of, and that might actually help? Money talks as we all know. Stepping off my soap box now. [smiley=twocents.gif] |

Everytime I go to my doc, she charges me $95, that isn't covered by my insurance. When I leave, she gives me a bag of stuff. Usually in the bag are at least 8 boxes of stat doses, any pred that I may need, verap and other med samples. If I"m going on a script, she usually gives me the first months worth of tabs. I figure that since it would cost me $125 per box of stat dose, without insurance, I'm getting at least $1000 of meds right off the bat. Not a bad shake for $95. My stats cost $10 per box with insurance, so I'm getting $80 worth of them, actually, but even so, I don't mind. The point of all this rambleing is that she gives me a ton of samples! |

I went to see him about a cold once, and I ended up goin' home with a month's worth of Ultracet samples... PFDAN............................................ ShadowLord |

Title: Re: Did anyone see that ?? Post by Mattrf on Jun 5th, 2006, 1:12pm That is actually my point, if they are giving away that much money worth of drugs it’s because the drug company is giving it to them, to get everyone using there medication. So is there better medication out there that there are no free samples of that would work better but isn’t prescribed because the doctors don’t get free samples? It is a classic marketing strategy to flood the market to get name recognition so people want just that product. It just makes me wonder about what might be out there that we don’t know about, not that a drug company would ever have anything but our best interests in mind. It reminds me of a book I read once called Of Blood and Wine at least I think that was the title, it was about the Gallo brothers and how they created there wine empire and how brutal they where when it came to how they ran the company and how they did there marketing, it is a good read and you will be amazed at how brutal these guys where even to there own family. |

I think my former psychiatrist's children's college educations were being funded by the makers of Concerta - provided by a diagnosis of ADHD. LMAO.... It's true - but what can be more frustrating, from the medico standpoint is that consumers watch tv and then rush in to their doctor and ask for the latest drug to treat "such and such." The doc says he'd rather start the patient on a different med because they feel it would better suit the patient, and then the patient says, "No...I don't want that. I want "such and such" - I know it is the right thing to treat exactly what I have." And how do they know that? Not usually by reading the journals or digging through the pharmacology texts (we are an exceptional group here!) - but rather by tv, magazines, etc. My first neuro told me that he had patients without seizures or migraines rushing into his office begging for Topamax when the word was out that topamax causes weight loss.... [smiley=ohjez.gif] Although for formula-fed babies, we do tend to use more enfamil based products rather than similac products. It's not that similac is not used at all, but not as much. And which rep do you think is up on the unit educating us more often? I refuse to be swayed....even if I do write with pens sponsored by drug companies!! ;) |
