Title: Question about next years OUCH Convention Post by Roxy on May 24th, 2006, 6:57pm Does anyone know if next years convention location has been set yet? If not, why don't we consider New Orleans? The city does need help, and tourism is a good way to help out. Just a thought. Having one in the south might help some people to be able to attend also. Flights are pretty cheap flying into the area. Tracey |

Even though I live in Chicago where the humidity is bad, I've been in the south during the time of convention. I was in San Antonio during last years convention...I thought I was going to die! The air was so humid it looked like it was raining! NOLA in December, I'm all over it, July...blech... :) |

Title: Re: Question about next years OUCH Convention Post by stevegeebe on May 25th, 2006, 9:58pm Thanks Tracey. Looking forward to seeing you. I've not had the pleasure of attending a CH Convention. I've wanted to but could not make it happen. I've always look forward to the photo-posts. One thing I know for certain is that it is mostly about meeting with fellow Cluster Heads and sharing the stories and meeting the people who post, in person. It seems to be less about where it is held and more like a family reunion. I may be wrong but with the exception of the people who arrive on Thursday, I'll bet little sight seeing is accomplished. Again, I've not been to a convention so I'm only guessing. Maybe not this year. Perhaps the following year... after the geographic distribution finds equlibrium. Or maybe the year after. Who knows? I would, however, enjoy hosting a meet and greet for those intrested...maybe in October...when it is less humid. I'll cook and pray for a little help from a friend in Houma. Steve G |

Title: Re: Question about next years OUCH Convention Post by Edna on May 25th, 2006, 10:25pm OK, I've composed myself after hearing from Tracey..........................I think !!! :-* Thank you from the bottom of my heart Tracey for your intention. Seems as though not many are in agreement with you though. Too bad for them, they know not what they do. I thought your idea to perhaps attempt a convention to help out is wonderful. Steve does have a point about the geographics, after all...........we sure would NOT want to be host to people who really don't care. Sorry, but the cheap shots about the city just aren't helpful at this point. Forgive me if I offend anyone, Katrina and all she wrought on the south are still too fresh. Yeah, Louisiana politics suck.........but the people here make up for that. Too bad some may never know that. Billboards about killing...............do you ever read any about drinking and driving???? It kills too you know. Not really sure what billboard you're speaking of, but I would hate to think we're the ONLY state that worries about things like drunk drivers killing, or unborn children being murdered. Forgive me, perhaps you misunderstood the meaning. After all, what I took away from my convention visit will forever be MORE about the friendships and fellowship that remain in my heart today. You can smoke in New Orleans, and you can drink........BOY can you drink. You'd never get thrown from the porch with nowhere to mingle again.........hell, just stay in the streets!!!!! But, alas, we're sooooooooooo misunderstood here. Steve, I got your back buddy. Great hearing from you tonight, and can't wait to see you next week. And just try to remember, it's RACELAND, not HOUMA.......LOL.......only a 20 minute difference.....LOL And Steve, you got the right idea........Tracy what say you........think the meet-n-greet is a much GRANDER idea. Title: Re: Question about next years OUCH Convention Post by stevegeebe on May 26th, 2006, 10:24pm Good question nani. During the repairs to the hotels that the company is in partnership with, I've become close friends with the managment peeps. With advanced notice, I would work the required angles and reach out to my neuro to secure a speaker/doctor. Dr. Deborah Elliot comes to mind...who is my neuro.. I could easily see the gang in the Chateau Sonesta (in the French Quarter)...within walking distance is the Red Fish Grille, Acme Oyster House. Zydeque BBQ, Absenth House Bar and too many other choices to mention. It would be a blast...I mean New Orleans did not have a nine billion dollar tourist industry because it resembled a plastic hotel adjacent to an airport runway. If that is all that is required, and that's not necessarily bad, than New Orleans is perhaps too distracting and counter-intuitive to the whole experience. I really believe that it's more about the friendships and that is why I feel that it does not matter where it is held. But if we need someone to scout out the possibility for consideration, I will be happy to do so. In all candor, I understand why other locations should be in consideration. But please do not discout my hometown in the future because of the reasons noted within this thread. Steve G |

Title: Re: Question about next years OUCH Convention Post by Lizzie2 on May 27th, 2006, 7:07am [smiley=hug.gif]'s Edna... Even though I only wrote one word on this thread, I just wanted to say that I didn't mean to give the impression that I wouldn't travel or even that I didn't want to travel to New Orleans!! I would very much like to, and I agree with what has been said above about how badly the city needs tourism, etc... In response to the fact that you need someone to agree to actually HOST the convention - I have a thought on this..... Does the person hosting the convention actually have to live in the city where it is being hosted? We have you and Steve as definite contacts in the local area. What if somebody else (or a group of somebody elses) were to volunteer to "host" the convention with planning and taking care of all the details, yet you and Steve would be available to make recommendations, get us some contact info if necessary, and pitch in however much or little as you are able? Would that be feasable? If that's the case, then technically a convention could be held anywhere and be hosted by anyone- not necessarily from the host city. Of course it is always easier if you live in the city where you are hosting....but is it a requirement? If enough of us want to do this in New Orleans, then I think we should. I think we should be able to gather our resources together and pull it off - even if the primary person responsible for hosting is not actually from New Orleans. It would still be much easier than hosting a convention in a city where the host is not from OR we don't even have contacts for! At least we have both of you (and a few others) in the area!! What say you guys??? I'm for it....and I'd be willing to put in whatever I could to help pull it off! Carrie :) *Edited to add: I remember during Katrina that so many people said how much they wished they could help. This is something we could do. Maybe some of us couldn't do much to help at the time - but this would still be a big thing to help bring tourism to the area and help build up the local economy. I think Roxy and the others who have posted in favor of this idea are really on a good path! |
