Title: Pay Pal question/scam Post by Karla on May 21st, 2006, 3:04pm I received this in my email today. I dont know if it is real or fake but either way it is fraud. Someone has used my paypal to pay 800 for a cell phone. I don't know if the url is a valid one for paypal or how to get in touch with them to stop the transaction. Do any of you know How I can reach Paypal? This is the url service@paypal.com is this the correct and legitamite url or am i getting a phis scam? Thanks for your help!! Scammers can use HTML code to show one address, but actually send you to another, kind of like this: http://www.clusterheadaches.com (http://www.ouch-us.org) Go directly to the paypal site via your browser and check your paypal account. If there is no charge listed, forward the e-mail to spoof@paypal.com. They will get back with you quickly letting you know if the e-mail came from paypal. If there is a charge, report it to paypal and see if you can get it canceled. |

I never never never open paypal from an email. If you want to check it out, go there and type in your password. Title: Re: Pay Pal question/scam Post by PL259 on May 21st, 2006, 5:49pm Forward the e mail to spoof@paypal.com this is their fraud folks, they will answer quickly. And they need to know. Also paypals address will start with https not http. Just as a safety measure change your paypal password and security question. Almost got caught on one a bit different from this one, then remembered that it was sent to the wrong email account. Now I spend the 7 or 8 bucks a month for one of the major credit monitors that automatically notifies me of any change in my credit history or any new credit/loan applications. JImbo |

Paypal advised me that if the e-mail message doesn't start with : Dear ( and your name), it is not from them. They ALWAYS use your name, not Dear Member. It won't hurt you unless you click on the link inside the e-mail, so if you open it by mistake, just don't click on anything and delete it. |

This may also be a real email from paypal and your account has been hijacked. Reading the source code of the email would help you tell if it is a fake. Title: Re: Pay Pal question/scam Post by unsolved1 on May 22nd, 2006, 8:58pm Good advice people ;) ( Sorry, I read this late ) It's not just HTML code that you have to be worried about, The link would most likely take you to their site which could be very dangerous if they use other coding. When using Paypal, like said before, make sure the address starts with https: NOT just http: https: addresses are more secure and generally considered safe. I would also click on the 'from' in the e-mail address and find out where this message was supposed to be sent from and add that address to your blocked addresses. There's no sense in getting another scam from this address anyways. NOTE: just because it says it came from 'johndoe@aol.com' doesn't mean much at all ! I had problems for a short time with someone sending mail using my address as the sender. Goodluck UNsolved |

If you MUST see what is 'on the other side' of that link, type it in a new browser window. Never trust a link that isn't secured (it must start with https://) 2) If you ever get an email from ANY vendor, and you want to then check your account just to make sure everything is OK, open a new browser and go to that site the way you would normally. DO NOT USE LINKS IN AN EMAIL TO GET THERE. 3) No vendor is ever (ever) going to contact you and tell you to 'reset' your account information. Ever. 4) MOST IMPORTANT... NEVER use your ATM/Debit card for transactions. Use your credit card. There are federal laws protecting credit card users. Your liability is almost ZERO if someone steals your info and uses it without your knowledge. The credit card company MUST credit you any disputed amount. Your bank does NOT have to do this if someone fraudulently uses your debit card. Big difference. 5) REGULARLY scan your bank statements and credit card statements for unusual activity. It is up to you to find the fraud and report it. Stay safe. Don't fall for stupid tricks. |
