I'm currently making the recovery discs for it. It's going to take 14 CD ROMS :-/ WTH ? I've been working on this for about an hour now and I'm only on disc 7. >:( How many discs did it take for you to make your recovery discs ? UNsolved <-- Burnin' through a stack O discs !! |

Title: Re: PC Recovery Disc ... Post by Tom K on May 16th, 2006, 12:18pm You would think that if it takes that many, they would provide them with the computer. Don't bother wasting time with the disks, get the progam called Ghost. Once you set it up, you can copy your whole machine automatically to another drive. I run 6 drives in my box and one is dedicated to holding the Ghosts of all the others. HTH |

Title: Re: PC Recovery Disc ... Post by Kirk on May 16th, 2006, 10:37pm I hadn't realized they were still selling Compaq's. My Compaq Portable 2, backs up on one 5 1/4 in. Floppy Disk. All the other machines in the house back up to DLT tape. I use a mini kernel on a bootable floppy with F/Tape on it. Boot from the floppy and recover from the tape archive. [smiley=smokin.gif] |

Title: Re: PC Recovery Disc ... Post by Opus on May 16th, 2006, 11:15pm Wow, feel sorry for you guys, If my OS ever needed recover, I would just download the latest version and install, My OS is one disk but you have to download the extras. If you do have one of those crazy restore partition, making discs or an image of it is a good idea. The cheapest way is to use Knoppix, run partimage, and save the image to a USB drive. Reminds me I better run sbackup tonight, and set up a schedule, been behind on my backups, well my backups of backups. I use a USB drive for off site backups in case of fire. Rambling Opus/Paul |

Title: Re: PC Recovery Disc ... Post by cekelle on May 17th, 2006, 12:21am I've had computers for years and never needed or used a recovery disc. Maybe I'm missing something? I've had some bad problems before, but nothing I couldn't fix by download and the CD's that came with the PC. :-/ Chris |

Title: Re: PC Recovery Disc ... Post by unsolved1 on May 17th, 2006, 12:42am All my other computers came with discs. I did need them occasionally. ( I had some major problems and had to reformat and re-install ) This computer I just got came with NO CD's at all. I had to create my own rescue discs. The program said I can only make 1 set. I hope that I never need them! UNsolved |

LMAO UNsolved[/quote] The Operating System is only 64K Why would I need a CD? The Linux boxes haven't failed since 94. So I don't worry about them much. Course if I wanted to practice failure, I have a Microsoft XP disc around somewhere that I could load. [smiley=smokin.gif] |

Of course, it's a DVD, and it was provided by the manufacturer, and now I don't use any of the software on it... But it makes a great coaster once you seal up that big hole in the middle. I have an old 8080, I loaded MSDOS 5.0 with 5 1/4 floppies. What a great OS, it even worked with a mouse. Now I am fighting to get Microsoft Windows server 2003 to update. SP-1 won't install, it says it is corrupt, I have downloaded that 230 MB file 3 times. Where the heck are MD5sums on MS.com? Opus/Paul |
