Title: Breaking News about Clusterheads and Alcohol
Post by BikerBob on May 3rd, 2006, 8:50pm
"Our data indicate that CH patients drink less alcohol compared with the German population and that CH seems to protect against hazardous alcohol consumption."

http://tinyurl.com/zxh34

Poll: Why do clusterheads drink less alcohol than the German population:

1) Well, Duh... Maybe it's because alcohol triggers the goddamn beast  :o

2) That's bullshit, we only drink alcohol excessively when we are at an OUCH convention. ::)

3) Because Ueli hasn't reported his alcohol consumption in Germany and that would skew the results the other way.  ;;D

4) The data must be completely false as evidenced by Melly's abuse of Sangria.  :-X

5) any other answers?  [smiley=huh.gif]

BB   ;)

6) Because the population of Germany drinks more alchohol on a daily basis than the city of Boston on St. Patty's day.

In the last 10 years I had a few beers and a glas of wine in Germany (at 2001 Convention in Regensburg). So your conclusion goes in the wrong direction.  ;)

I can't even drink Sangria, too much alcohol content (I learned that the hard way).  I can only handle 12% or less and it has to be consumed after I've done any driving for the day.

Anyway, yes, the article says:

Quote:
data indicate that CH patients drink less alcohol compared with the German population and that CH seems to protect against hazardous alcohol consumption. Moreover, predictors for hazardous alcohol consumption in CH patients are not different from the general population.

Sooooooo what's your point?  That we arn't that different than the general population?

Well no, we really are not.

edited to change 11% to 12% and also to say: ha ha, I had 1 glass of Sangria and couldn't drink anymore, l get it now, LOL. ;;D

Well - it is interesting to note that the article states that having CH is possibly protective against hazardous alcohol consumption.  Most headache specialists would say otherwise.  So if the article is true - then it really contradicts what most in the field think and believe.

My  neurologist has implied that I'm a heavy drinker, and I drink maybe twice a year at most.  At one point, he made some comment to me about MS Contin and avoiding alcohol.  I reminded him that I don't drink, and he said to me, "Well........... (long pause), you're a clusterhead."

I think that's enough said right there about how ironic the article is, in spite of things!

Ok, maybe I don't get it. [smiley=huh.gif]

I do have a couple drinks about 4-5 times a week.  Society may call it excessive, but I don't give a flying yahoo what society thinks.  Who are they? God?  I think not.

Now, when I am in cycle, I am 100% alcohol free (except for the oopsie shotglass of wine and RC seeds.  BAD BAD idea, especially with the med I was on at the time).  The article is referring to CH patients, but I don't know if they are pertaining to while in cycle or not.  I will tell you this tho, when I am out of cycle, you can be damn sure I'll be living it up till tne next one!!

WTF, I am so confused. Either I'm a drunk because I'm a clusterhead or a clusterhead because I'm a drunk.

Or maybe not, and this Doc is a beanbrain, knotheaded moron. Yeah, I pick that one!

Have lived this whole friggin clusterhead life (25 yrs) listening to crap like this. If they are so sure, then where is the "cure". Oops, bad word, sorry!

Lizzie2, I feel for you.

" He thinks he drinks because she nags,
She thinks she nags because he drinks,
but neither will admit what's true,
that he's a sot and she's a shrew"

So, maybe this whole nightmare has nothing to do with alcohol, and maybe the medical profession will move on and address what the real problem is (of which I have no idea and STILL waiting).

Heavy sigh, regards,

Jon

Oh Ree, thanks for the laugh!

I was just pissed. The medical "profession" does that to me.

LOL Jon...made me laugh anyways! :)

Your comment is dead on with the medical profession needing to move on from focusing on things like alcohol consumption, IMHO.  When I was at the AHS conference last summer, someone made a statement to Prof. Goadsby during a Q&A session that if a patient wasn't a smoker, then they couldn't be a clusterhead.

Dr. Goadsby shot that concept down, as well he should have.  I later spoke to him in person and we both laughed over a few of the stigmas that I most certainly don't fit....nor do lots of people here!

For some reason, the medical profession got locked into categorizing cluster headache sufferers.  The alcohol "connection" is nothing more than another "stereotypical" CH'er, in my mind.  And something that we all here can poke through since there are a wide variety of drinking habits here.  I imagine we cover the whole realm between those who abstain from alcohol to those who drink daily, and everywhere in between.

So yeah - they should move on. :)

But I'm no shrew...  ;)

Nope Lizzie, didn't  think for one moment that you are a shrew. Point being that some Docs think they know what a clusterhead is (or isn't). We live it, and we don't know. How can they?????

Jon

I know....just had to joke some. :)

I have my theories on why docs don't know these stereotypes are dumb, but that's for another post on another day... :)

Take care!

I hate to say it but alcohol numbs the pain.  It's not a trigger for me so, I don't do it often but when I have a headache it's a nice escape.  ;;D

Yeah.. I have to admit the day they did the  survey only I turned up against the entire German population... and I paced myself!   ;)

Back in the "old days" when we were doing surveys on this site, I think the Survey says:  CHers who drink alcohol - 50% (about the same with smokers).

I don't even know how to answer that survey. I drink a drink occasionally (very occasionally). I have liquor bottles in my bar that have more cobwebs than my ironing board! I think I had a beer about six months ago.

Alcohol isn't a trigger for me, but I just don't think about drinking that often and when I do I'm too lazy to get up and go fix one.

That theory needs to get OFF THE BOOKS!!!

Hmm... I should never take surveys about alcohol or smoking. I never have smoked and have made few others quit... ;) And I drink about twice a  year - and not even a whole glass; few sips of bubbly gave me symptoms in January.

An amazing study. I hope it was not funded by GlaxoSmithKline as I'd hate that the high price of Imitrex is funding such gems of information such as this.

So, to carry there conclusion forward, they are saying that CH'ers should feel lucky because of our affliction, that we are spared of the concern of alcohol abuse. And, that maybe for those that are alcohol abusers, we could go into their hypothalamus and figure out a way to tinker with it so we plant CH into non-CH'ers to get them to stop drinking.

Pointless drivel.....

But then, Germans drink approximately 13 liters of pure alcohol (200 proof) per person each year
http://www.who.int/substance_abuse/publications/en/germany.pdf

That's 32 liters of 80 proof per person per year!

In the US it's 8 liters of 200 proof
http://www.who.int/substance_abuse/publications/en/united_states_of_america.pdf

Clusterheads as a group drink more and smoke more than the general US population.

Again I say, the malfunction that causes CH also causes us to have addictive personalities.  It will interesting to discuss the topic with Doc Sewell at the OUCH convention since his speciality is substance abuse.  There is research into tinkering with the hypo and neurotransmitters to control addiction.

Clusterheads contain and cope with a lot of intense pain, and the misery of how it affects life.  If smoking or drinking a little more than average is noticed through all the enduring, those doing studies about it are fortunate to not have a piece of this affliction to maybe understand it better rather than just pointing out the occurance of drinking or smoking.

have you ever noticed how often the same papers about CH reappear time and time again like it is new news. I think some of these guys take an old paper change the wording up a little put their name on it and act like its new, just to see their name in print.

This is way old news actually. My neuro at MHNI when I lived in Michigan warned about alcohol, but there are only certain drinks that will act as a trigger for me.

Brandy will bring it on almost immediately. So will Gin.

Peace,
