Public school makes for better scocial skills in the long run.

It's a good idea to learn at least OF things not everyone thinks you should know. We have enough surprises thoughout our lives

Public education and schoolbooks have become a political battleground between conservative and liberal agendas. While the actual standards of many public schools is shit thanks to lousy students with bad attitudes. I agree with Charlie for the greater good but I would still choose private or home schooling.

Depends on your definition of "Education"

If it is to memorize fcts, and become
adjusted to factory work...send them to public school.

they have blocks of subjects, very little horizontal thinking, and most tests are standardized...which means if you can regurgitate information, you will do pretty well.

Retention? what's that?
Cross subject problem solving? What?

Home school if you can afford it.
More emriching of topics and
you can let the child discover skills and information.
Library is imprtant either way.
Reading of other view points,
energizing imagination...that is what sparks learning.

I was pretty smart...I could have had all a's
but I also had dyslexia...and was bored in
public school. Being a new kid all the time
didn't help me become very "socialized"
and in high schoool I begged mother
to let me go to a correspondance school....
but lack of funds and information
helpd us back and I stayed in public school....
Heck I even went to Prom...
but itwas a waste of time....

My true friends still keep in touch,
but so much is posing and pretence...
why bother????

Life will teach you all we lack...
either path is just as good.

It's up to you...lead and guide wither way.

I'm not sure I'm educated enough myself to teach my kids, hell my kids no more about the computer than I do and the oldest is 7.

Deal or no deal? I don't understand the question. Some people want to school their own kids, and do. Others want to send them to a school, so they do. I've met great people from both routes.

Small town schools are ideal. Small classes, and the teachers can actually spend time with the kids that need it. I know some kids that grew up home schooled and they went into shock when they went to college. One jumped off a bridge. The other came home and still lives with his parents.

Social skills are needed, and good education is hard to come by. Never stop learning, and teach your kids that.

I went to both public and boarding schools and both have advantages... Sent my son to boarding school for a few years and then back to public schools. He got a lot out of both. Learned to stand up for himself in boarding school and went back to public school with more self-confidence.

Either way I think they need the interaction with other kids.

What I have a problem with is PRE school. I think we're pushing these kids too fast. Let 'em be kids for a while. They really don't need to read and write by the time they're three or four -- let 'em be KIDS!

And I agree - small schools are best -- less students - more teacher involvement. Parents NEED to be involved also - that's the biggest problem -- schools can't TEACH if parents don't get in there and help a little.

This is a sore spot with me right now -- our pubic education system SUCKS and it's our fault as much as the government. Parents send their kids to school to learn everything and think they can just ignore them for 12 years and the kids will learn -- PARENTS have to be a part of education. Parents have to teach their children respect for teachers and make sure they do their homework (they have to be interested enough in their children to do so) and be there for them. They have to "get involved" in school activities and KNOW what's going on in the schools. Know the teachers, know the principal and be there when something happens.

We need to learn to turn off the TV at night and spend some quality time with our kids and their school work or else we ARE going to raise a generation of morons. That's where home-schooling comes in -- After classes they need parents to LEARN with them at home!

The more I work with high school students, and hear about the s**t that their teachers pull with them (teaching them how to snort coke, and roll joints), and the horrendous s**t that they pull on their teachers (low-cut tops in order to pass tests...), parents, and adults in general, I am of the opinion that I will never have kids. Seriously, I worry about what I will do.

I pulled some crazy stuff in high school, but it pales in comparison to what the kids in my youth group tell me. And, they aren't bashful about it either. I never would have been open with my youth minister about the stuff I did...but these kids have no problems.
