Title: Windows Update Problem
Post by unsolved1 on Apr 26th, 2006, 12:23pm
My friend is having a problem; she can't get any of the Windows Updates.

Following message is displayed:

[Error number: 0x8024001D]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view.

I cannot even find anything out about it at Microsoft.com    WTF?

Any help ? Anyone ?

Thanks in advance

She wouldn't happen to be using a pirated software OS would she?

Googled that error.....

Quote:
UPDATE: If you're getting error 0x80070057, you can rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download to c:\WINDOXP\SoftwareDistribution\Download.poo and all updates will be downloaded and applied again.

Probably have to do that in safe mode....

Starting today, Microsoft is really enforcing the "Genuine Advantage" program in the US. They are a pushing an update (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905474/) that will check your system for a valid keycode. If it is a hacked/keygen version then you will get a notice about that. Gives you the choice to buy XP for about 99 home/ 149 pro from MS & a few other options. They aren't going to block any critical updates if you have an unlicensed copy, just can't get any of the new updates.

Michael,

I have a desktop pc that did the same thing.  It had to do with the automatic update feature that XP has.

I had to redownload automatic update feature, then all was ok.

I'm not home...but I'm pretty sure the error was the same as hers.

I had problems with it myself AND my antivirus updates......said a component was missing ? So I did live update again manually and it seems to be ok for now. But my Norton antivirus stuff up in May and after that mess with McAFEE I dunno WHAT to do ?? (I paid online for my update and could NOT receive it......my brouser crashed and no matter what I did I could not receive it. So I bought the cd and could NOT download it and update either....AND......last but not least.......I am still bein charged for McAfee every year even tho I don't have it and haven't for over a year now.....can't get ahold of them via email or calling and have sent cancellation notices....my credit card co said they will NOT block charges either) So anyhow I don't want to go thru that again. Are any of the free anitivirus programs that good and WHY would they be that good if FREE anyhow and reliable ????? Hyjacker Pam

Sorry bout the semi-hyjack job I just pulled !!!!! Gotta figure out what to do in the next few weeks.

My buddie uses "AVG" anti-virus and likes it. He said it was Free.

I don't know where he downloaded it from though. Maybe it's "cracked".

The two antivirus programs mentioned are very good, but are only good for personal use. Then cannot be on a business computer.

One of the best antivirus suites is called PC-Cillin. All of my local customers that use it, have no problems with bugs at all, while those using other brands, do have issues.

Unsolved, If you have not tried the Windows system restore, figure out the approx date that unit worked, and roll back to before that date. If you don't know how, PM me and I can give you instructions

Yes, I know how to use Windows restore, lol. This update problem is not on my comp, but a friends who bought it used and 'restored'. (cheap bitch) I was just trying to get her off and running. I'll check it out and see if it has a restore point or was just reformatted by the guy she bought it from.

The REAL problem is: she should've went out and bought a new one instead of wasting $275 on a used, 9GB HD POS !  ::)

If those programs are GOOD and are free.......what makes them available like that.......free and all ? Why would a co let you use a product free and be as good as the ones ya buy ? I don't want to let my Norton expire (or risk tryin to update and it screw this thing up like the last renewel did with McAfee either. Do the free ones keep trogans and worms and all stuff includeing spyware out ? I jus don't see why they'd offer ALL that free and you be totally protected. I can't afford to buy anouther computer. I have killed once too often Pam
