Title: Car MPG recommendations
Post by BlueMeanie on Apr 20th, 2006, 6:10pm
Hi all,

Haven't posted much lately. Been busy looking at houses.

O.k., here's the story... I'm moving 60 miles ONE WAY from my job. This kills the conserve gas thread.  ;;D

I NEED a car that has excellent MPG. I figure to put around 30K miles a year so it'll be pretty much a disposable car.

What can you all recommend ? BM

PFDAN to everyone.

LOL Jimmers, I was thinking more on the lines of a Chevy Cobalt so far, the sticker reads 34 MPG with a manual tranny.

Honda Civic, hands down. Still get 40 mpg (hwy) after 12 years and 175,000 miles. Damn dependable, too.

That sounds like a heck of a deal. It would last me 6 years at that rate.

Thanks Nani.

I have been driving a Ford Focus ZTW....33mpg on the highway.  Plus, it's fun to drive--good acceleration at lower speeds.

Well, hubby drove 30 miles to work 1 way each day and got 27mpg with his 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix.  So far I'm getting 26 with my Bonneville, but I haven't driven it far enough to really get an accurate highway mpg.  Plus, the acceleration is much faster than a 4 banger. ;;D

Of course, a V6 Camry is a good choice too for pickup and mpg. ;)

If not a Honda Civic, then a Toyota Corolla. Rated at 30/38, with 40+ possible on the highway with cruise control.

My dad lives 45 miles away from his work, and drives 5-6 times a week. He drives a Honda Civic, and I have one because of him. He gets an average of 38 mpg at 70. I am cheap, so I drive 60. I got 47mpg the other day going to see them. VERY reliable cars. Has a good strong engine, and goes, (as my dad states) like a striped assed ape.

Hope this helps man

I had a 1989 Mustang 4cyl, that got the same gas mileage, I guess the engine efficiency development is really stagnate.

I gotta agree with Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. I just bought a 2006 Corolla and got 38mpg coming from Memphis to Kentucky and I had the cruise on 78mph all the way. I am sure if I had driven 65mph, I would have easily gotten 40mph. Both are very dependable. The only reason I got a Toyota instead of Honda was we have a local Toyota dealership in town.

The hondas are great mpg and reliability. My Kids getting 38 mpg hwy and 32 mpg city with a civic he says. Nice zippy little car. And hes a got a heavy foot.

For sale

Ford expedition.
12 mpg city, 14 hwy if you drive like me.
Cant hardly give it away. Only $90.00 to fill the tank yesterday.

Acura RL uses premium gas 14 city, 20 hwy at 85 mph cruising speeds. tickets extra.

Have 69 dodge 4-w/dr p/up not for sale but gets over 7 miles per gallon. has full dual tanks of gas from 4 or 5 yrs ago. I have come to call it my retirement account due to the value of the gas.

Think I'll get a moped.

Depending on what you'd like to spend there are several choices.....

Buying new....price not much of a concern....

VW Beetle Diesel   City - 37  Hwy - 44
VW Jetta Diesel              36             41
Toyota Corolla                32             41
Honda Civic                     30             40

Buying new......price a concern......

Kia Rio                    City - 32   Hwy - 35
Chey Aveo                       26             35

Buying used....
All of the above plus.....

Dodge Neon           City - 29   Hwy - 36

All are manual transmissions.....

Suburban 4x4 - 11 city, 15 hiway, and you only need to fill up every 400 - 450 miles.  Saves on frequent stops at the gas station. Only $114.00 yesterday.

I'm glad you are having such excellent results.  THis could very well be true if your original intake was overly restricted, but I have seen several independent studies performed by various car clubs and magazines that don't support yours as typical results.  In fact, K&N filters typically let in more particles to your intake system and in some cases offer no performance increase over OEM filters.  In addition, the oiling (usually over oiling) of the filters will contaminate the mass air flow sensors on many modern cars.  I won't argue with results, so if it's working for you, great.

I like my 2000 Excursion with the 7.3l Powerstroke.  Beleive it or not, it gets about 23 mpg on diesel, which is cheaper than regular unleaded here in California now.  I have it chipped, so I not only get the good mileage, it added 110 hp and 100 ft/lbs of torque too.

The environmaniacs hate me, but this burns cleaner and uses less fuel than my BMW.

edited to add:  plus I get to pull stoopid tourists out of the Pismo sand dunes almost daily.

We also have a 2000 Toyota Corolla with 90,000 miles that gets 34mpg, and that's with a bad O2 sensor.  As soon as we get that replaced, the mpg will go up.

:)mel

(p.s., FU, diesels rock!)
