Title: important reading Post by zwibbs/Scott on Apr 20th, 2006, 2:03pm Smile, Talk, and Raise your arms. STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters... February 01, 2006 My friend sent this to me and encouraged me to post it and spread the word. I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks. Seriously.. Please read: STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00pm, Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this... A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. RECOGNIZING A STROKE Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps, STR . Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S *Ask the individual to SMILE. T *Ask the person to TALK . to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. . . It is sunny out today) R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. {NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue... if the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke} If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved. "The deeds you do today may be the only sermon some people will hear today." --St. Francis of Assisi . _________________________________________________________________________________________ WARNING: All e-mail correspondence to and from this address may be subject to public disclosure under the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act(FOIA). |

Title: Re: important reading Post by BarbaraD on Apr 20th, 2006, 2:42pm Thank you Scott As a person who lived with a stoke victim and saw what it can do without warning to a "healthy" person, this is an important thing to know. Hugs BD |

Title: Re: important reading Post by Lizzie2 on Apr 20th, 2006, 3:27pm Good thing to post. Since we all live with something that has abnormal neurologic features, it can be easy for us to overlook new things that we may not see as serious right away. I'm willing to bet a good number of us have some risk factors for stroke between issues like weight, smoking, blood pressure, diabetes, family history, co-morbid migraine disease, and some other things....so we need to be on the lookout! Hugz, Carrie :) *Oh and since this has been read by at least 30 people at this point, that's at least 3 people you've saved according to the cardiologist's theory. Good work. :) |

Title: Re: important reading Post by medic1852 on Apr 20th, 2006, 5:14pm An important note to this..... Time is a factor in stroke recovery! There are two types of "STROKES" either a bleed which is the worst and one caused by a clot. Both are bad but if you have to have one pray for the clot! The reason is if you meet the criteria, time. They can administer a clot buster medicine and re-profuse the brain or the damaged area. With a bleed the damage is already done, but it must be stopped. So if someone you love starts having "stroke like symptoms" the following is very important! Notice the time of onset Take all of the persons medicines to the hospital with you As quickly as possible go immediately to the nearest hospital. Best of all call an ambulance and tell them the time of onset since we can begin treatment as soon as we arrive, since we are an EMERGANCY ROOM ON WHEELS. Rodger |

But remember...say NO to thrombolytics until a CT scan is done. That is playing Russian roulette!! Also, there are a list of several other things that make thrombolytics contraindicated, but the main one is giving it to a person having a stroke before you know if it's embolic or hemorrhagic!! Stay safe and Rodg is right - earlier the treatment the better the outcome!! Hugz, Carrie :) |
