Title: As if we don't have enough to worry about Mumps
Post by catlind on Apr 17th, 2006, 10:27am
There is an outbreak of mumps in the west Iowa Eastern Nebraska region.  As of this morning 7 cases of mumps here in Omaha.

My daughter came to me yesterday and said "Mom feel this, there's hard lump under my jaw".  I told her to get as far as away from as she could, if she has mumps I'm moving out!!  I never got a mumps vaccination, I had measles and german measles and there was no need at the time to do an MMR.

It turns out, every single case has had the MMR vaccine, this strain of mumps is resistant to the vaccine.

Just fuckin ducky!!  If you live in the MO, KS, IA, NE area be on the look out for a mumps out break.

I guess it would be a fast way to lose weight....(gotta find the positive somewhere)

THAT is a moving target in my yard. Little batards killed an entire row of new rose bushes. Bastards!

Cat--be careful of *bumps* in strange places.  ;)

Oy Vei Update, This mornings news had 7 confirmed cases:

Nebraska now has more than 100 cases of the mumps.  State officials say 32 of the 110 cases have been confirmed.  Doctor Anne O'Keefe of the state Health and Human Services
System, said most of the mumps cases are in southeastern Nebraska.  Most of the cases are among people ages 10-18 and 35-45.  The mumps epidemic is the nation's first in 20 years.
Some 600 suspected cases have been reported in Iowa.  There are also cases reported in Kansas, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin and Minnesota.  Mumps is a viral infection of the salivary glands.  Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches and swelling of
the glands close to the jaw.

Well if you combine all 3 of the kids I might have mumps in the house, Andrea has a swollen gland on the right side, but it's a small one, Ayden had a fever, and Alex has aches and pains (something about concrete not being very soft when falling off a skateboard)

Andrea has had enlarged nodes since birth, not sure what that means other than everyone used to say she had a Kathleen Turner voice.  So far no fever, no general malaise and no further swelling so I'm just watching and waiting to see how the numbers show up in our school district.
