Title: When We Were Kids......
Post by medic1852 on Apr 11th, 2006, 1:58pm
I remember when I was a kiddo, (just a wee little HOG). I did not recieve an allowance. If I wanted my own money I would go out and mow lawns in the summer time for cash. Started mowing lawns when I was about 8. My wife says that our hogs are still to little. Another thing was we would go in search of empty coke bottles the kind you could refund for cash..
http://coca-cola-collection.com/US25cl1.jpg

You always hear folks say, "those were the days". But were they? My pops was always gone on deployment or something (military brat), so we were always giving mom hell. I was never left with a sitter, after the age of 8. Mom and pops would just tell me, they would be back later. Well that was my cue to do what I wanted..I also remember running around without anyone to watch me. Cant do that anymore cause someone will snatch you kids.
Another thing I remember and this is and the coke bottle was my point. What kinds of thing do you all remember as kids. I remember the coke bottles...And Cartoons. Cartoons were great when I was a kid.
There was Super Chicken....George of the Jungle....Mighty Mouse....Speed Racer.....Bugs Bunny....Elmer Fudd....Yosimite Sam...Back in the 80's thought Tipper Gore and her bunch decided they were to violent....Now we got crap like the Power Rangers...I guess those arent violent...Oh well what do you all remember.

Interesting post Medic but ya need to respect yer elders young un ;;D

Yes I believe those were the days and remember them fondly (very). I raised my spending money the same way you did cept there weren't any plastic or twist tops back then. An average shovel job in Chicago was worth $1.00 maybe $2.00 if you had to dig the car out after the plows had come by. BIG BUCKS

I lived in a neighborhood of really big lawns so when I got my hands on a Briggs & Stratton I flipped it on it's side, remounted the carb on top, installed a pulley wheel where the blades used to be and the same on the back wheel of a bike...and man I was of to the races. No whining to the parents about how everyone had better crap cuz they didn't!

Yeah I miss those days when as long as you adhered to the one supreme rule " DON'T TAKE CANDY FROM A STRANGER "
you were pretty much good to go. There were no crackheads and if there were junkies we just thought of them all as wino's and hobo's and as long as they stayed in the boxcars and we rode on top we could all get downtown peacefully to sit on the shore of Lake Michigan next to the Planetarium just waiting for the next cop car to come by cuz you knew you could out run em and there hearts weren't really into catching you for a curfew violation anyway cuz if they did they would have to drive you clear out to your home precinct and even back then the cops had better stuff to do....like free coffee and doughnuts.

yeah man ! THOSE WERE THE DAYS !!.............tim

I grew up in Albuquerque New Mexico. 701 South Florida Street in the south east section of town. Havent been there in over 20years, and from what I understand the police now call it a war zone. but even in that neighborhood the golden rule was not to talk to or take candy from strangers. I used to run all over that town as a kid. Even then it was a huge town. But it had everything a kid could want to do. Go to the mountains about a thirty minute walk from my house, or go to the Zoo just a bus ride to the other side of town. Go to a baseball game wathc the minors the Albuquerque Dukes, (farm team for the Dodgers) on the far side of town. It was nice. Hell I could not imagine letting my hoggs loose on that town the way I use to roam it.

Back then...

8 Oz. coke in a bottle for $0.05
Fizzies tablets
Little Rascles
Bowery Boys
Clamp on roller skates with key
Sputnik and Telstar
Play was climbing trees
Junket tablets  (made pudding with them)
Hardware stores where they sold everything! and it wasn't packaged.
Gas was ~$.25/gal.  Not that I drove, just remember my dad bitching when it went to $.30/gal

Necco's , real custard, and chunkie's.  I never had a sitter either.  Mom and Dad alway's worked and I started at thirteen.  I gave them my entire salary $65 for about 50 hours before and after school and weekends.  My kids won't buy thier own gas, or anything for that matter, but I'm glad to do it.

Oh my. things have changed.

Went to boat shows and all sorts of things with them when little. Then we got a boat and spent weekends at the lakes. I fished all weekend and loved the quiet and really enjoyed it. We'd go to the big city and try out new fancy resturants for entertainment with anouther couple but I was always the only child....but I was good and I had fun. Always had a pet turtle or hamster or guinea pig. Kids now days seem to want so much more.....and hanging out at home is OUT ever.......and everywhere they go there is a perv lurking it seems too now days. I even walked a long ways to school by myself when in junior high verses ride the buss with the stuck ups.....no one ever bother'd me. Even walked out to where my horse was by myself along back country roads without any trouble. A bottle of coke and peppermint patty was a TREAT to me......times sure have changed !!! How 'bout chasing the ICE truck down the street to get a piece of ice off the back of the truck in the summer..... Ok, that's OLD days stuff... And the days when ICE was delivered to your house and put in the ICE BOX!  Yeah, we had a milk man too. Dad always said my brother resembled him (never did understand that one????).

Allowance??? Heck, we EARNED what we spent. We did the babysitting for younger brothers and sisters (us OLDER kids - 7-8 or so). Locks on houses - unheard of....

We walked to town - by the time we got home mom and dad knew everywhere we'd been and what we'd done -- the town watched us.

The one thing (after we were older) that we NEVER wanted done if we got into trouble with the law was "our parents told". When the cheif of police caught me doing something I shouldn't be doing (which was often) I'd always beg him to take me to jail, but "don't tell Dad!" Little did I know, he was having coffee with Dad every morning and giving him a run down on my nights activities. I learned this after I was grown, but he never took me to jail. I also didn't know they were laughing their rears off about it! Today I'd probably be serving some hard time for those childish antics. (The cheif always took the beer away from me - someone just bet me I couldn't buy it - I didn't even drink beer! But I'd take a bet on anything.)

I just wish the kids today had some of what we had and less government interference. We didn't turn out so bad.

Hugs BD

barefoot, t-shirt and cut offs.

Never in the house form sunup until sunset.

If you did something wrong the neighbor kicked your butt and then you got another one when you got home.

I watched the same cartoons Medic. Gathered coke bottles to turn in for a coke or RC and a moon pie or a boardwalk  :). We could scrap enuff cotton after school to get a drink and a candy bar. Hell I remember  (vaguely) 3 cent cokes then nickle cokes, then gasp damn it went to 7 cents! That was harsh. The front door on our house was never locked, hell it didn't even have a lock. Seems like we went a million miles on the old bikes. Or we made "tom walkers" and covered long distances on them. Nailed coffee cans on the bottom of them so we could cross creeks  :), we got wet alot! Picking dewberrys, blackberries, muscadines, then mama making jelly out of them. Snake hunting, snipe hunting, wonder how we survived sometimes  [smiley=huh.gif].
Guess I am into my 3rd or 4th childhood!

Growing into your cousin's hand-me-down clothes.

Wearing your sister's first Simplicity pattern shirt she made for you.  ::)

Seemingly permanent grass stains on the knees all your pants, or there was rip there.

Dirt on hands and feet that would never wash out.

Being old enough to not have to walk to school with your older sister and her girlfriends.

Corrupting your younger brother when he's old enough to get spanked.

Scraping your knees but not wanting to go home because mom would put iodine on it that hurt worse.

Having to sit at the table until everything was gone in your plate and washing it down with the glass of milk that got warm.

Having to get someone to cross you when you wanted to play on the other side of the street.

Commanding your first squad on a house by house mission when all your friends got toy guns for Christmas.  Then getting shot but still wanting to play, but had the coolest spin around act when getting shot and killed.

Leaving your bike in the driveway when your dad got home from work and pulled up.

One day it just became your job to take the garbage cans to the curb every week and still remember the sound of dragging the too heavy cans down the pavement driveway and so pulled them on your skateboard.

Planning months until your club of friends could each get a quarter pooled together to order some cool looking fort from the back of a comic book and then seeing what a piece of plastic junk it was after waiting 6-8 weeks.

Going to the drive-in already in your pajamas with a pillow in the back seat.

Putting your first kite together with dad and learning about tying rags together for a tail.

As a little kid (before I became an entrepreneur), I remember ...

- Playing chinese jump rope with my girlfriends until it got too dark to see the stretched rope.

- Riding my bike all around town, never going anyplace, just for the joy of riding.

- Playing cowboys and indians with my neighborhood pals.  I always chose to be an Indian.

- Watching Captain Kangaroo and the Mickey Mouse Club on T.V. - just because that's the only kid's programs they had then (what are cartoons?)

Then I got old enough to babysit.  Man, did I rake in the money at 50 cents per hour!

random memories as a kid...

- regularly raiding construction sites to collect returnable bottles to fund the candy habit

- using same construction sites as our personal jungle gym, jumping off the 2nd and 3rd floor into a dirt (and nails) pile

- going to the drive-in with my uncle, packing my own rolls of paper towels and windex so I could make a few bucks washing windows (EASY money)

- never wondering who was taking me anywhere, always got there on my own, even across town

- messing with the unsecured telephone network... stacking call trunks from one end of the planet to the other

- climbing under the Golden Gate bridge (I'd be arrested for terrorism for that today)

- spending countless hours at the beach unsupervised (unthinkable today with all the freaks out there)

45 LP's
Rocky & Bullwinkle
Mighty Mouse
Smurfs
Seeing "Annie" and "E.T." at the Fox Theater with my mom :)
Garbage Pail Kids
Courderoy pants
Mom and I getting Peanut Buster Parfaits from Dairy Queen
A&W Rootbeer Floats
Riding in a car without a seatbelt, especially laying down in the backseat and falling asleep
Not caring what I looked like, sounded like or acted like and laughing until it hurts
Playing outside with my friends until dusk...unsupervised
Cutting with a sharp knife when I was 6 or 7, guess when I sliced my finger open at 2 yrs old, mom figured I was good to go by then ;;D

I remember mostly my mom being inbetween marriages.  I pretty much raised myself with some help from my Grandpa and Grandma.  I REALLY took care of myself when mom took herself off of her lithium. (but that's a story for some other time)

I miss those days... :)

Captain Kangaroo!!!  I miss that show! :'(

Taking little brother up on the roof and telling him the Superman cape will make him able to fly.

Running with sharp objects.

Leaving the bathroom door open so mom’s bridge club ladies could hear you pee.

Smoking in the boy’s room.

The old light-the-sack-of-dogshit-on-fire on grumpy MacScrooge’s front porch, ring the bell and run was always fun.

Trying out the You’ll-go-blind theory (I don’t really know, the other guys told me that).

Pants’n the skinny geek and running his pants up the school flag pole.

Now that brought back some memories. People who lived in trailer parks would always put there empty Coke bottles under their trailers.

We used to sneak out in the middle of the night and craw under them trailers for the bottles. We'd literally FILL shopping carts FULL of bottles and cash them as soon as the store opened. That would add up to alot of cash back then. We sure where heathens.  [smiley=laugh.gif]
