Or alternate subject: My son the genius is a MORON.

After everything settled down yesterday, my son tells me that he has been suspended for 10 days but as usual he did nothing wrong.

I had to go to the school this morning to find out that he AGAIN was messing with the school's computers for reasons other than education, downloading stuff onto his jump drive WHICH HE WAS TOLD NOT TO DO IN THE FIRST PLACE, and ended up getting a virus on the schools computers. Then, they found out that he had downloaded information on how to get around the school's puter security software, which is what he did last year (hacked into it!)
So lets ice this layer of the cake: he may be expelled and they are talking criminal charges because this is the second time.

SOOOOOOOO...... in the meantime, the dr. put him on accutane for his skin, the insurance denies the claim (so far) and the prescription is $578.19 A MONTH.

Did I mention that the job I was hoping to get, I didn't get? Oh yeah, and did I mention that the unemployment benefits will be running out real soon?

when does this crap let up?

added: If he is expelled he will be sent to alternative school which means I will have a 45 minute drive each way, twice a day to take him there. hello!?! How the heck am I supposed to find and start a new job and say, oh by the way new boss, I can't be here because of meetings with the school board and I have to drive my son back and forth to school????!!!! I am past frustrated bordering on meltdown.

Have you researched the medicine that your son is on? It is discouraged to be used in teens because it can lead to aggressive behaviour and suicide. There is a list of nasty side effects. Please look into this if you havent already.

yeah, we were informed by the prescribing doc about that, but looks like its a non-issue anyway cuz I can't afford even half that cost.

At least he is a computer genius and if he hones his skills in the right direction, can actually start his own business. Time then to look after the great mom that went through all of this with him over the years.

Ummm....maybe buy him a good pair of tennis shoes and let him walk that 45 minute drive. Maybe he'll learn that there's punishment when you misbehave.

The parents seem to get the punishment....

Criminal charges? Ask the court for home confinement with the ankle bracelet.

Accutane. Ask the Doc about an alternative or generic substitute.

know just what you're going through. had a daughter kicked out of an entire school district. it was either that or face a law suit. she turned herself around big time. i beat the school security on hte computers in college. when they booted up the comps all you heard was i'm trapped inside this computer let me out. everyone thought it was funny but the school. oh well life does tend to work itself out hang in there. jim

Jennifer---I know how you are feeling. You want to scream at the top of your lungs---but nobody seems to care. Your son will outlive you so try and remain calm....Believe me I know from experience---my two are 18 and 22---and the stuff they put my wife and I through would make for a good sitcom. Funny to others----not so funny to us.

I swear to god, this is an ACTUAL CONVERSATION I HAD WITH THE KID....WORD FOR WORD OF WHAT HE JUST SAID TO ME........
mom I was thinking about something last night. You know when sound waves of the same frequency, I meant to say wave lengths, interfere with each other and it seems to get louder? its called constructive interference. when to out of phase waves meaning the crests and troughs of waves interfere they cancel each other out. thats called destructive interference. thats why its quiet on a plane. you know light waves, or light works with waves too. LIke this, (taking flashlight and shining it on stove) see? its light. the two lights interfering make it seem brighter on what I am shining it. I think it would be possible to make a beam which would cast shade in different areas, like destructive interference. What do you think?

Technically, it should be feasable, but no more so than an opaque object blocking the emitting light source in the first place. Sound can travel through a solid object, so you have two primary choices for noise reduction... Sound absorbing materials and noise cancelling technology... Both of these are used in modern sound proofing, because it can be difficult to block all sounds with just one or the other without making the barrier unresonably think and/or expensive. But with light, even a lhin layer of foil or other materials can create a nearly perfect barrier against visible light. Blocking other frequencies of light and radiation could benefit from your son's line of thought though, but it would still have to compete with other materials already found to have dampening properties for those frequencies.

Yep... You'll have trouble with that one... Theoretical thinkers can definitely be a tricky bunch.

I think this kid needs to be pointed in the right direction to allow him to develop. Some people just don't fit into the norm but will amaze you when put in the right environment.
Today's schools have little interest in reaching out to kids that are different.
Having said that a sharp mind is no excuse for being a pain in the ass and disobedient.
How old is he?

We need to go back to the days when the only reason people had children was to make sure there were enough farm hands around.

A few hours of hard work every day would do wonders for knocking most of the snot out of todays children.

Most children today have too much time, too little to do, to much material crap, and too little motivation. Hard work? What? Who? Me???? - Can't we just pay someone to fix it or buy a new one? Ain't progress grand!

Hard work will teach great lessons Jennifer - I'd have the boy sweating from places he never knew existed. Every day off would become a lesson in the wonders of manual labor - it's amazing how many tasks you've been putting off for just such and occasion. Make a list and start crackin' the whip.

Pain in the ass for sure but basically a very good 16 year old kid. He's always been this way. Once he stayed home from school cuz he was sick (around age 11 or 12). I called to check on him and he told me that he was watching a program on Discovery channel about nuclear weapons and biochemical warfare.

"Um, Harry, just promise me you won't do any experiments or build anything while I'm not home, ok?"

"Oh I won't Mom. Besides, even if I did, I'll only use it on bugs."

Dark, that was just like stuff he says all the time. I have no clue what the hell he is talking about most of the time. If he could just use that energy toward his schoolwork and not spend so much time trying to figure out how to build huge fan fields to blow hurricanes back out to sea, I'd be a lot happier. (his theory is to reverse the wind)

Could be worse... He could be puttin' his talents into not gettin' caught... At least when you get caught, it tends to knock ya down a peg or two for a while... When you don't get caught, you just keep gettin' worse and worse 'til it's just too bad to hide...

Sounds like you need to perhaps speak to someone in the school system to find out how you can get him into some advanced programs. I'd even go as far as the local college to see if there is maybe a class he can take after school.

Just suggestions... I don't know what it's like to have a gifted child, but I do remember what it was like being friends with them at 16. Irritating as hell!! [smiley=laugh.gif]

Agreed. Sounds to me your son thinks "outside of the box" and that's a good thing. Also seems like a candidate for advanced level science/technology courses to keep him challenged and allow him to focus his thought levels in a more productive manner. Could just be a case where the school's curriculum is not up to his level.

He needs an outlet for his computer skills. Maybe contacting your local Linux users groups and having him attend would give him some ideas of what real Hackers do. He could teach himself a simple programing language like Python, and learn to Hack a computer by making it better. If he doesn't have his own computer to play with then getting him an old one to work on. People throw away older computers too slow for Windows that will run Linux just fine. Of course with his record having his computer connected to the Internet might not be a good idea until he proves himself trustworthy.

know how it is to deal with a troubled kid, the school years are pure hell. just getting my daughter to school everyday is a challenge. i am fortunate because she is special needs and under the 504 program which gives her special help and some protection from getting expelled.

I hope things start looking up for you soon.

Paul, he just thinks stuff, then I see him going up to his room with a screwdriver, a few toothpicks, a piece of wire, a broken telephone and a few other unknown gadgets ........and believe me, it leaves me wondering wtf will he make this time?

He was learning something Linux something a jiggy on the puter at school. He does have his own puter and many spare old ones people give to him to tinker with. He took several of the broken ones and built a working puter for my daughter.

The prob with trying to get him enrolled in advanced classes is that he won't keep his grades up in order to be enrolled. He WAS also taking college computer courses thru the high school, but now he will probably be kicked out. Remember last year when he hacked into the school's security system? The IT guy said he'd hire harry on the spot if he was 18, and they used his way into the puter to find and close the gaps- those same gaps that harry was this time trying to get around! I'd like to whap him upside his brilliant head and make him THINK about consequences before he does this shit. EVERYONE says if he used just half of what he is capable of, he'd achieve the unthinkable. But he just doesn't listen and thinks there is nothing wrong with what he does cuz he is "learning" about whatever he is doing. (which really is his motivation- that brain never stops!)

oh, and your comment about anti-light being not feasible right now? Give him time.

Your example of his conversation with you makes me think that he needs to see a psychiatrist...his loose associations sound as if he may be having an emotional crisis (and he is at the right age).

Jen,

Sounds like he is well on his way to becoming a Hacker (Being a Hacker is a good thing). Since he can build computers he should direct his excess energy ( mental that is) into installing, learning, and running software. PM me your address and I will send him some Linux discs. Tell him he can use them to make a workstation, web server, database, ftp server, terminal server and even a cluster, all for free. Then if he wants he can learn programming, the good kind that is. Also if he has any questions he can email me.
