Title: quick! I need opinions Post by JenniferD on Mar 8th, 2006, 12:46pm a friend was having trouble getting a contract back from an atty's office. It had a bunch of typos and she asked for it to be corrected, and to get a copy of this contract on disc. Its been weeks. So she scanned and emailed the original doc to me, took me an hour to download it, then all day to re-type it and send it back to her (corrected & proof-read). Now we can't decide how much she is going to pay me. Suggestions? |

Title: Re: quick! I need opinions Post by Margi on Mar 8th, 2006, 1:00pm Hi Jennifer, I used to be in the business, actually - I was the manager of a business centre and we leased office space to small companies and did their admin work for them. You have to determine your hourly rate - and to do that, I would do a search to find out competitors rates in your area - and record your time. We used to figure on 8 minutes per typed page, so we could do just over 7 pages per hour. Legalese is harder to type though, so maybe 6 pages per hour. We charged $35 an hour, so a quick way to calculate is to total the number of pages and divide by 6 and then multiply by your hourly rate. (i.e. 42/6=7 7*35=245) This is a link to one of our competitors and I see the rates are still the same here in Canada: http://www.businesscentre.ca/support.html Maybe go through your yellow pages and look for Office Services, or Word Processing and see if you can find a website that will give you an idea of competive rates? And, don't forget to include the time it took you to download and reload the corrected document - could be a couple of extra hours on the bill! |

Title: Re: quick! I need opinions Post by ABarham on Mar 8th, 2006, 1:32pm I think Margi is pretty close on that one. When I was a salaried paralegal, and of course did stuff other than type, I was paid $27.00 an hour. But for a full day of what you did, I think somewhere between $30 and $37 is pretty good. Louise |

Title: Re: quick! I need opinions Post by karma on Mar 8th, 2006, 3:05pm A freind? Let it ride one day the favor can be returned. |

Title: Re: quick! I need opinions Post by Dragnlance on Mar 8th, 2006, 3:10pm I agree with Karma, but it "depends" Some friends will not return the favor, (not a real good friend in that case, but true none the less) Some friends insist on paying for services as such. My suggestion is, if they want to pay, what do YOU think it is worth? Maybe they need to cook dinner for you some night, or there is some thing from Partylite candles you want... or maybe and even $100.00 will do. Just my 2 cents. Lance |

Title: Re: quick! I need opinions Post by ABarham on Mar 8th, 2006, 3:11pm Ya know---I really have go agree with Karma. I wasn't thinking about it being a friend. I have always taught my children that friends do what they do for the friendship, not because they EXPECT anything in return. If a favor gets repaid at some point - it is just an additional bonus to the friendship. Mama Weezer |

Title: Re: quick! I need opinions Post by BarbaraD on Mar 8th, 2006, 3:19pm One question Jen. Did she PAY the attorney yet? If not - take your fee (give her the amount) to take OFF his/her bill for "redoing" it. I've done that a few times. And I have been known to send the jerks a bill for doing their work that they didn't get around to finishing. Otherwise - I'd decide how good a friend it was... sometimes a favor is worth more than the money.... Hugs BD |

Title: Re: quick! I need opinions Post by Mr. Happy on Mar 8th, 2006, 4:14pm I'm still stuck on the "hour download" thing. Even at slow, slow, SLOW rates, that still comes out to the better part of War and Piece! Then, you were able to proof read and re-type the entire thing in one day? Your friend can't afford you. Nobody can. Freebie's da word. RJ |

Title: Re: quick! I need opinions Post by JenniferD on Mar 8th, 2006, 4:21pm thank you all :) she asked me to do it for pay, but we just couldn't come up with a figure initially. You all have NO FREAKIN IDEA how slow my dialup and puter are, that's why everything takes so long - I can't even look at the videos y'all post on here. So anyway, we did come up with a good "friend" deal and I'll be doing some other work for her that she's going to pay me for. Thanks for all the really good input!! |
