Title: Geez Jersey......going too far methinks....
Post by TheMasterBaker on Mar 7th, 2006, 7:55am

On the surface this seems to suck...........WTF Jersey.....

You guys better do something about this before it spreads....

PRE-FILED FOR INTRODUCTION IN THE 2006 SESSION

This bill would require an operator of any interactive computer service or an Internet service provider to establish, maintain and enforce a policy requiring an information content provider who posts messages on a public forum website either to be identified by legal name and address or to register a legal name and address with the operator or provider prior to posting messages on a public forum website (http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2006/Bills/A1500/1327_I1.HTM)

Seems to suck down here too.....*sigh*

So basically, it means that they want anyone who is using the internet to be identifiable?

Wouldn't that be a good thing?  I mean, a lot less crime would be committed OR those committing crimes on the net can be identified and arrested....  IE, sexual predators of underage children.

IMO, I don't see why so many want to remain anonymous.  What are they trying to hide?  I suppose I feel this way because I am honest about who I am on the net...  I wish more people were that way. *sigh*

Ok, now that I said that, can you tell me what the opposite side to the would be?  I mean, why would it suck?

Just curious, not looking to get into an argument, because I really don't know why it would be a bad thing.

I agree with Melissa... We all should have our full legal name, and residential address posted for all to see before we post on this forum.  That way, any time someone don't like what we say, or who we are, it will be easier for them to find us, and let us know, in person, how much they dislike us.  It'd be so much easier to settle disagreements like they did in the old days.  Or maybe by phone instead.  They could call at any time of the day, all day if it's convenient for them, and tell us why they disagree.

Of course... My luck would be, when I wanted to find one of the trolls and let them know how I feel about them, they'd prolly of just used a false name and address anyways, so I'd be shit out of luck... But at least my name and address will be available for them to use any way they see fit.

And of course, if one of those trolls using the false name and address does something illegal, and DJ is unable to provide the correct information, then the site should be shut down immediately... Just because he runs this site out of his own kindness, and desire to help, doesn't mean he shouldn't have to spend all day, every day, making sure everyone's that's posting has provided a correct and legal name and address.

I was under the impression that internet movement can already be traced. Most cyber-pervs don't have the technical background to be able to 'hide' from those who want to know.

But imnothub... Why would the state of New Jersey bother using proper detective methods, if they can get the forum operators to do their jobs for them?  After all... With all the money they prolly spent on law enforcement, they can't possibly hope to be able to afford a computer forensics specialist.

Um, Drk?  That's a really nice cocky attitude you got there, but I got the impression that it'd be the ISP provider with the information.  Not the whole fucking world.

Ok, nevermind, I reread it and understand it now.  And no, wouldn't be a good idea.

but Drk, the cockiness was completely unnecessary. >:(

Actually... It's likely that the content provider will be held responsible.  And true, the content provider is only required to register the information... But...

Take CH.com for instance... DJ will be responsible to take this information for every registered user, and then verify that the information is correct.  Last I heard... DJ runs this site in his spare time... Do you think that he has the time to verify everyone's personal information?  Would you want the site shut down because he was unable to fulfill the requirements of a law that is nothing more than a way for law enforcement to not have to do their jobs?

Also... It's a bad idea to trust a new site with personal information.  Are you sure that information will be kept secure?  Are you sure they won't use that information to their benefit, or maybe sell the information to a mailing list?

Personally... I find anonymity on the internet to be a good thing... I know if I do something illegal, that the law can find me... That's fine.  But I don't agree with having to provide personal information on every forum I post to.  I also don't like the idea that if I start a website, and offer a guestbook, forum, chat room, or just a place to post poetry... That I could get into trouble for not prying into someone's personal identity information.  But that's just me.

P.S.  Ya didn't like my sacasm?  Oh well... That's what I get for trying to be witty.  LOL

See Drk?  If you would have explained it like you did in your last post, I wouldn't have gotten so mad at your wittiness. ;;D

Thank you for the explanation.

It’s just another way for Big Brother to keep the people down.

I’ll bet the tiny fine print will say that the keeper-of-the-names is responsible for any and all information, messages, remarks, innuendos, poems, manifestos, requests, misspelled words and lies that are posted or inferred to at any and all websites.

And I’ll bet the politicians have exempted themselves from the rules.

Funny that I haven't heard mention of this on the news at all around here.  You'd think they'd jump on this kind of thing!!

Although, they've been running news story after news story on NBC10 on how to find your kids "My Space" MSN blog website and monitor your kids' use of the internet.  Also, they've been uncovering some bad stuff happening on that website.

So maybe they've mentioned the anonymity thing somewhere in there and I just didnt' hear it.

Either way...don't think that's gonna catch on world wide too quickly! ;)

Think of all the great business opportunities if this became law!

I made public my e-mail addy on this site. The result for this morning: 14 mails in my inbox. 12 were marked automatically for bouncing, one I had to bounce manually, and only one was of the type I want to read.

Duh...                   [smiley=smokin.gif]

We know how well psilocybin works for clusters largely due to the anonymity of the web.

The reason to oppose stuff like this isn't on its merits but because I don't need to make things easy for Big Brother. They already do it but when you allow this, it just encourages more...."Well, we did that before so you won't mind just a little more....It's the last time, we promise!"

It's our job to make it as hard as possible for government spooks. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/google it.gif
