Title: stealing 'me'.......
Post by cootie on Mar 4th, 2006, 12:05pm
You guys are always SUCH a help with questions and things goin on in the world today........could someone explain credit card theft plans and how banks handle it.....good plan verses bad ? My credit card co called today and tried to talk us into there credit card theft plan.....they will ONLY send the info if you enroll in the plan !? I talked to them not long ago cuz of these charges from the antivirus co I don't have and what to do about it and that guy tried to talk me into it then too. I realize in this day and age it is a GOOD thing to have but the figures he gave me STAGGER'D ME if I heard him correctly !!! He said they would charge us 70 cents on the dollar but if we went with the plan we could feel safe and not worry bout somone gettin our account info and us gettin charged thousands and stuck with it. They'd take care of it IF we had the plan.....no worry. But.......um........who can afford what they will charge tho ? And even if I heard the guy wrong and he said 7 cents on the dollar it would add up alot on your bill......too much. How does that work ? I think I may close that card soon and am goin to apply for one thru my regular bank that now OFFERS credit cards. They dropped credit cards years ago and we got stuck with this other bank for it we have now. MBNA I think it is. But our bank changed names and now offers a card again but not sure what to say about the extra credit card theft program if they mention it and so much. I've had my account stolen on ebay but they fixed it for me takeing charges off.....but......seems to me hackers can get into banks info ect ect and steal numbers even if you don't use your card online......rite ? Thanks and I always appreciate all your help guys.....am asking all this for Brad actually. I always tell him I will go ask the family when he has issues. He loves ya Pam

This world is gettin too scarey too fast.........too much goin on all at once. And nothin anyone can do........why can't some of it be controlled sumhow. Like the job situations and fuel hike ripoffs and havein to pay if someone steals accounts or loose everything. The land of victoms it seems.

Pammiecoots.......first off, you CAN'T behave like a victim.. you are ONLY a victim if you allow people to make you one! Be solidly informed! When you change cc, do you research....choose the best APR offered, and take the credit protection....if it is free! I had my briefcase stolen a few years ago, with a full book of checks in it. Once I realized what had happened, I filed a police report and set about stopping any charges. My bank reimbursed every penny, and cooperated with police to find this ring of thieves. Additionally, the bank gave me the number to report identity theft via the credit reporting companies.the ones that create your FICO scores. We have a watch on that as well...........If you have credit, the very best thing you can do is monitor that score. be diligent.
Don't let people intimidate you......YOU are in control, Pammie!
Good luck!

Thanks cathi......but is it rite to go with a plan that would charge you 70 bucks a month to have full protection ? I swear the guy told ME 70 cents on the dollar for the protection and I bout dropped the phone but that can't be rite......even 7 cents on the dollar per month is alot tho added to a bill. (no shit tho I SWEAR he said 70 cents cuz I got real quiet cuz of the SHOCK FACTOR). Not sure if it was monthly or yearly but it went by how much your balance was. But even if ya only owe a few hundred bucks those charges would be astronomical to keep up with along with everything else. So I'm tryn to get informed before I talk to my regular bank about switchin to there card and what a good theft plan is. My other card said they "no longer cover you" for any credit card theft.....and I think they are talkin bout charges if someone got yer account info sumhow or stole your card ! And only sending you the info IF you enroll kinds SUCKS. He'd told me the first month was free.....but of course if you don't call within 30 days you get charged. If it runs 70 bucks a month then FORGET THAT ! We been smart not runnin up a credit card bill but sumtimes things break and you GOTTA use it. Big bucks charges on the dollar of yer balance is NUTS if that high. State of contusion Pam

Brad's shop is suffering and he is a STRESS MESS and theft and price hikes on things has us THINKING.

Most of the credit card fraud these days can be eliminated by the simple use of a pin number. If every transaction be it debit or credit had to have a pin number punched in at the time of purchase, alot of this would go away. No more "Swipe and go" transactions. Very simple protection as I see it, but its just another way for the CC companies to keep the interest rates up for the honest people by saying "Fraud is costing us Billions!"

Does anyone think the problem wouldn't be solved if it really did cost them Billions? Yeah Right.

Be aware that cleaning spyware and viruses from your system on a regular basis. Both need to be updated (preferably) on a daily basis.

Example: a trojan horse, which is considered both a virus and spyware, can install a back door onto your system and allow a hacker into your system at will. Trojans typically anymore, add a "key logger" which notates the keys location on the keyboard that you push when going into a secure website. This information is then sent back to the person who wrote the virus and thereby giving them access to your accounts.

You  have to scan for this on a regular basis, because there are so many that come out every day (last year average was 40+ new viruses every day)

I help customers with this every day, and can tell you that it is no small problem. Thousands of people are infected, and not taking precautions to correct it, and loosing millions of dollars (collectively) every day.

Everyone is right.

These bottom feeders at credit card companies are as bad as the identity thieves. They are not on your side. The exist to get your money and nothing but. http://fool.exler.ru/sm/shrk.gif?SSImageQuality=Full

I've had luck calling them to delete mistakes and once to nip in the bud someone who was about to use my name. Nice timing!

The companies take advantage of fear that is promoted every time there is a horror story on tv news. http://www.kolobok.wrg.ru/smiles/standart/scare.gif?SSImageQuality=Full

Don't let them suck you in kids.

Creditguard, only $69.95 per yer gets you access to your credit report, assists you if your card is ever stolen, yada yada yada.... I sold the shit outta that when I was on the phones for crapital1.  It FEEDS on peoples' fears and we milked it for all it was worth.
First of all, check with your card company and what benefits you have with them. Remember, its part of the representatives job to sell you products and services of their business partners. You may already have the protections you need thru your company.
I think its like you're only responsible for $50.00 if your card or # is stolen but find out the terms of reporting BEFORE it happens.
Also, you already have access to your credit report and you can monitor it yourself, once a year for free at I think its www.freeannualreport.com. <--its close to that if incorrect.
It IS difficult to correct problems once they occur on your credit report, but you really don't have to pay a 3rd party service to do it for you. Stay proactive in diligently monitoring your statements and credit and question or report anything you're unsure of immediately.
But don't let a credit card company bully or scare you into buying a service..they're in it to make money...YOURS.

Nope, that's one that you automatically get enrolled in one of the many "credit protection" programs.

I'll try to find it again. I've got it here somewhere.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

When you order your free report here, you will begin your free trial membership in Triple AdvantageSM Credit Monitoring. If you don't cancel your membership within the 30-day trial period, you will be billed $12.95 for each month that you continue your membership.
 from their site.

here it is: www.annualcreditreport.com

This site gives you your credit report from the 3 major credit bureaus, you can also get your fico score and credit analysis for a fee,  I paid  $5.95 last Sept.

Also, this site does not try to enroll you in some form of "credit protection" service.
