Title: Soldier's homecoming

This wonderful man had a chance to photograph the welcoming home ceremonies for his regiment (he was in the advance party).  I just included the link to the forum (you dont' have to be a member for this particular section).

Please be aware that these pictures are very emotional.

Those were amazing pictures. Thank you. :)

Watching those pics made me wonder what it was like when my grandfather and his troops came back home back in 1944...

Naturally the situation back then was different. They were in war because they didn't have any option. It wasn't a choice to any of them. They had to go to risk their lives for their country. Finland would have lots its precious independence if they didn't fight for it. We lost lot of young men back then.

Only handful of those heroes are still with us. Part of me is scared that what will happen when they're all gone and the younger generations won't see them on Independence Day Ball held at the Presidental Palace and cannot be truly reminded of their history. It's been a long time since the war, so it's easy for the youngsters to forget the true meaning of our Indepence Day. Many youngs already show signs of taking it for granded and I think that it's unfourtunate.

Aguess I got caught back thinking about Finland once again... Can't help it. Sorry about that.

It's funny, he *asked* for critiques on his pictures.  That particular thread is up 4 pages now and not one person has offered a *critique*.  Like someone said, the pictures he had taken were *real* photojournalism.

Just for historical accuracy, Finland was a Nazi ally and fought with them during WWII.  Sorry about that.

Photo's with feeling.

The utter joy of people reunited.

My prayers to the families of the heroes that would not return.

The price of war is just too high.

Just for historical accuracy as you say.  Finland had NO choice but to ally with the Germans.  Russia was making a massive effort to overtake Finland and subjugate it to Russian rule.  Finland wanted no part of this and asked Sweden, France and the United Kingdom for military support by regular troops.   The Finnish govt/people were literally forced into signing the Moscow Peace Treaty of 1940.  The Soviets took huge chunks of Finland for their own use.  For better or for worse, the harsh terms made the Finns inclined to seek support from Germany, and made many Finns regard a revanche as justified. In the end, this might have been a necessary condition for Finland's survival in the World War.

So....read and realize that Finland felt that it had no choice in this matter.  Who it thought were allies weren't and the Finnish people thought that allying with Germany was the only way to get out from under Russian control.

Thanks for clearing that up about Finland being an ally of Nazi Germany...I'm sure that your explanaition brings comfort to the 6 million Jews and approximately 50 million Russians, not to mention the other several million Allies who fought and died against the Nazis and their allies in WWII.  I guess that the end justifies the means, Delta-especially since the Finns had "no choice" but to ally with Hitler and friends.  The Brits could have done the same thing but instead they fought-how silly of them! ::)

CHTom,
When you learn your history a bit better, come back and we'll debate it on another thread.  Until then, be a nice fella and read a few more history books.

Sanna,
Finland has a lot to be proud of during WW II and their treatment of the Finnish Jews.

I guess that you would have voted for Oswald Mosley for PM had you been around during WWII.

Actually my daddy was a nice gentlemen who knew better than to argue with his betters,  much better mannered than some people on this board.  *Yo*,  How old are you?  Not only do you need history lessons, it would be wise for you to take a few English lessons and learn to speak properly.

Equal to what?  Perhaps a first grader?  Oh wait, "yo mama" and "yo daddy" is more commonly used by fifth graders isn't it?  When you grow up and you can have a discussion with your intellectual equals without resorting to puerile comments and behavior, please come back.

Nevermind, just go away.  I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

Ok just 1 stupid Question!

Exactly what the he11 did you try to accomplish with that crap CHTom?

Ok 2 and a comment.

And why did you feel you should attack people trying to show something and portray something that touched there hearts?

If you feel the need to attack people go do it on, or at a thread that isnt one that is trying to be positive. That was totally unprovoked and at best childish. You must really be crying out for attention to act in that manner. I am sorry for you and your loss, but if you like someone may have a spare pair to lend to you.

Mike

Ghost, I understand and appreciate your motives but you're playing right into this gormless gob-on-a-stick's hands.. ignore him. He wants a fight, it's all he's good for! Piss and wind springs to mind...  ;;D

Actually what I wanted to do what he did was totally wrong and needed to be brought to the front. I feel sorry for those that need attention so bad they have to attack people over seas, or even here. he couldn't think of 1 good thing to say? pathetic!

Mike
Thanks Helen but sandie and darlin didnt deserve what he did.

That could prove extremely dangerous could it not?   Someone might want to check his ISP and see if it traces into the nearest rest home (you know the kind where you wear the nice white jackets that let you hug yourself all the time).  Only a person not in their right mind would be stupid/ignorant/egotistical/demented enough to launch an actual *attack* on the women on here!  Don't you concur Helen?

Well, Ghost, my first post corrected an historical inaccuracy regarding the roll of Finland in WWII, that was my only goal.  You are correct, I should not have allowed myself to be drawn into a battle begun by Nazi apologists, but I hope that you understand that when I read something like that I do get upset and I responded in kind.  If you read the responses that I received, not one of them acknowledged Finland's role during WWII as a Nazi ally.  My remarks had nothing to do with Sanna or any other Finn living today, but it appears that some people on this board appear to want to ignore that fact and instead responded with personal attacks-and my responses could have been worded better.  As a child I had neighbors who had been in Nazi concentration camps-numbers tatooed upon their arms-and thus it is a subject that stirs strong emotions in me.  I do not hold Finland's Nazi past against the current Finns as I do not hold the German Nazi's sins against the current Germans, but I do get upset with people who want to ignore history or are apologists for the Nazi's and their allies during WWII-I think that I can accurately state that there were NO valid reasons for any country to join Hitler and his crew of homicidal racists.  If Delta and LeLimey want to ignore history and imply that there were "good Nazis" who had valid reasons for being part of the most barbaric crimes of the last century, then I pity them and they disrespect those on the Allied side who fought and who gave their lives to stop that great evil. Shame upon them and others who think like they do.  In my mind, the Nazis were the personification of evil and I cannot understand how any rational, non-racist person could think otherwise.  This is what I should have written instead of what I did, so apologies for my former posts on the matter and let this one stand as my true response.
