Title: Re: Any plans for Passover in April? Post by MJ on Feb 25th, 2006, 9:32pm I forgot I have the internet. So I looked it up. taken from the internet; "Taking place the first 2 nights of the 8 day holiday, the Seder is the most important event in the Passover celebration. Usually gathering the whole family and friends together, the Seder is steeped in long held traditions and customs Leading up to the first night of Passover, the home is cleaned and cleared of all yeast foods, called hametz. All hametz is either eaten before Passover begins or "sold" to non-Jewish neighbors and friends" Purim; (from judaism 101) "Purim is one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when the Jewish people living in Persia were saved from extermination." Condensed versions, hope they are right. Raised in a lutheran home I missed out. |

Title: Re: Any plans for Passover in April? Post by sandie99 on Feb 26th, 2006, 4:22am I was raised Lutheran, too. :) My family isn't that religious, though. I'm probably the most religious person in my family. And I have traumas from my childhood: my school used to show us terrible film about Jesus' last hours before Easter break. :o And that was years before Mel Gibson's flick... Easter is interesting time for me this year. Me & Mum leave for Prague on April 13th, my birthday is April 14th and it's been 9 years since dad died on April 18th... That is always a sad time for me. I always miss him terribly on that day... Old memories from 1997 come back on that day. I connect dad's death and Easter, as back in 1997 me and mum attended some Easter concert day after dad passed away. I have happy memories about Easter, too. I used to dye colored eggs as a kid. That was lots of fun. :) And when I was a kid I used to eat lots of chocolate eggs, Kinder was my fave. Mum used to hide chocolate eggs around the house and I and my pals went to find them... Naturally it wasn't about if we found them or not but more like would we found them before dad - he liked chocolate more than anyone else! ;;D BTW, in America kids go trick'n'treating on Halloween. But kids in Finland dress up as witches and trolls on Easter, on Palm Sunday, to be exact. Then they decorate branches of birch tree with strings, feathers and all nice things and go to door to door say this poem: "Virvon varvon tuoreeks, terveeks tulevaks vuodeks, vitsa sulle, palkka mulle" It's difficult to translate, but it basically is good-will wishes; kids wish good health to the people for the next year. The tradition is, that after the kids have said that poem, they will give that decorated branch to the people who have opened the door and they will get candy, cookies, cupcakes, donuts, fruit, money or etc. as a reward. http://www.finlit.fi/tietopalvelu/juhlat/paasiainen/kuva/KRAK_2002_146_2.jpg Sanna |

Title: Re: Any plans for Passover in April? Post by LeLimey on Feb 26th, 2006, 6:32am I think it's really important to teach my kids about other cultures and religions so I love hearing these stories and traditions. I always take my children to the Diwali festival in Leicester for instance, the hindu festival of light. We've had special meals for Eid and all sorts of other festivals too but as yet we haven't celebrated a Jewish one, sounds like a good idea for this year. For Easter I always decorate the window with painted eggs and chicks etc, there are alot of kids living around me and they love to see it. I buy more easter eggs for everyone else's kids than enough too but its fun and kids were put on this earth to be spoilt once in a while weren't they? Barney was born on Good Friday so I always joke that everyone else got a visit from the Easter Bunny and I got the Easter Barney.. he never tires of hearing that and I love seeing that big satisfied smile on his face when he hears it again. This year is the first time his birthday has fallen on Good Friday again so we have to do something very special to celebrate I think. Especially as he turns 11, double one and he is excited about it. I haven't put too much thought into it yet but we WILL have a family day out somewhere fun, might take them to France for the day or something.. I'll let you know! First of all I have to get through a marathon pancake making session on tuesday night, it's usually about 3 pints of batter and I don't even eat that stuff! Kids! |

Title: Re: Any plans for Passover in April? Post by E-Double on Feb 26th, 2006, 9:55am Seder translates as meaning Order. It is a meal that has a specific order of tradition. Much like a Jewish prayer book is called a Siddur. This has the same root. The last supper was a Seder. The traditions of Seder essentially tell the story of the Jewish peoples exodus from Egypt. |

Title: Re: Any plans for Passover in April? Post by cardogman on Feb 26th, 2006, 9:50pm In the end as we all probably know the only real difference between Christianity and Judaism is the belief that the Messiah has come versus the messiah hasn't arrived yet. Old Testament / New Testament At each Passover seder there is an extra place setting and the front door is kept open for the messiah to come in and sit down and have a bite to eat. In 55 years it hasn't happened yet. I have a feeling it aint gonna happen. Dogburtcar |

Title: Re: Any plans for Passover in April? Post by MJ on Feb 27th, 2006, 1:06am Judaism says no messiah yet. Christians say hes been here and gone. Some say be back soon. Muslims say last one wasnt him came later. Mormons say been here a couple times. The UFO cult says will be here any day. Guy with the sighn says he saw him just yesterday. I wonder if the group that jumped on the comet ever caught up with him. As for me and my house we believe them all because its good to have something to believe in. edit to add: this was just a passing thought not intended to upset or make light of any belief. hope for all faiths. |

Title: Re: Any plans for Passover in April? Post by wildhaus on Feb 27th, 2006, 4:11am Passover (in Hebrew: PESAH) The week-long Jewish holiday, occuring during the Spring season, that recalls when the Israelites, the ancestors of the Jews, were miraculously freed from centuries of slavery in Egypt. The name refers to the last of the ten plagues that God inflicted on the Egyptians. All their first-born children were put to death, but God "passed over" the houses of the Israelites. Immediately afterwards they were set free. It also refers to the lamb that was sacrificed and eaten in ancient times on the first night of the holiday. (Exodus Cap. XI) Seder: The festive meal held on the first nights of Passover. The participants recite the Haggadah, as they symbolically relive the experiences of slavery and the joy of being free people. The traditional ceremony is very complicated, so it is done according to a detailed order. The Hebrew word "Seder" means "order." Haggadah: Jews in each generation are commanded to tell the wonderful story of their liberation from Egyptian slavery, especially at the "Seder." The traditional text that is used for this is called the "Haggadah" (telling) Hametz: When the Israelites left Egypt, it was so sudden that the dough that they took with them to make bread did not have time to rise (leaven) and become ordinary bread. To remember this, everything that contain bread, yeast or any other leavened items must be carefully removed from Jewish homes before Passover, and cannot be eaten or used during the holiday. In Hebrew leaven is called "Hametz." Instead of regular bread, Jews eat Matzah during Passover. (Exodus Cap. XI) Opening the Door: At the end of the Seder meal it is customary to open the door and welcome in the Prophet Elijah: Elijah the Prophet (in Hebrew: Eliyahu Ha-Navi): Elijah was one of the most beloved prophets of the Bible. He delivered messages from God, and miraculously helped many people. Elijah never actually died, but was taken up to Heaven in a flaming chariot. Therefore it is believed that he still travels around carrying messages between Heaven and Earth. The Bible also says that Elijah will be sent to announce the coming of the final redemption, when we will all live in a perfect and peaceful world. It is customary to leave a special cup of wine for Elijah on the Seder table, and it is believed that he takes a sip from it as he visits every house on Passover. |

Thank you for above posters for posting the meaning of Passover and some traditions. Also I would like to add the a total cleaning (makes spring cleaning a joke) is done to the homes including the removal and burning of all products containing leaven. Special dinnerware is set out and the home is reskohsherized for those who observe. A big to do but it is a joyous holiday. Also on Purim it is customary to get very drunk on this holiday. I kid you not. My cousing fell down the stairs one year. I almost died with laughter. OK I am warped. |

Actually, you only have to burn it if it is too late to get rid of it the normal way. Typically, a week or 2 before the first night, people take these food products to a store or co-op and sell them. If you forgot about an item and you see it the day before passover begins, you must burn it and then reclean the whole house. Also, the procedure of keeping water or anything moist away from the matzoh is really interesting. It is believed that when moisture touches flour is when 'chemetz' is created. In 1 part of the seder, you must make a little 'maror' sandwich. Maror is lettuce and horseradish, and there can be droplets of moisture on them, so you must take great care to insure there is NO moisture AT ALL on the lettuce. For passover at my house, i am going to clean my kitchen of anything considered levenous.....and just put it in another room. Also gonna have hand made matzoh from Israel shipped over.......and you can bet there wont even be the possibility of moisture getting near it!! Its gonna be fun, I cant wait. And just wait til the end when we are all held 'ransom' and my daughter has to find the hidden matzoh before we can be finished with the passover seder! YAY! BMonee |
