Title: ha's and scuba Post by tanner on Feb 22nd, 2006, 10:16pm i recently returned from 6 months on the island of st.maarten. i went down there at the invitation of a friend that owns a very nice villa with an olympic size pool. last feb i blew my back out at work and rather then sit on my ass and collect disability and lose what little mind i have left we thought it would be a good idea to accept the invite and swim, swim, swim. while i was there some other friends that own a scuba biz thought i should learn to dive which we managed by having my gear dropped overboard and suiting up in the water so as not to screw up the back. i never actually went diving while i had a bad ha, but i did notice that a shadow would go away and i never had a new one start while i was at depth. Usually 30to45 meters. anyone else ever notice anything similar? it almost seemed like pain didn't exsist on the bottom! tim |

Title: Re: ha's and scuba Post by Dragnlance on Feb 22nd, 2006, 10:58pm Tanner, I am a certified Master Diver, and had to hang up my gear due to the HA. It just took the fun out of it. Any time I was down more than 50 feet, or 30 feet at a longer time, I would come up with a total spliter. Freaked a couple of my dive partners as they thought maybe I was Bent! I have talked to a couple of people that have migraines that also had to quit because of HA. Hope this helps Lance |

Title: 'Re: ha's and scuba Post by tanner on Feb 22nd, 2006, 11:10pm well dragnlance , thanks but that do'es not make my day. one of the instructors down there is a migraine sufferer and while she wouldn't dream of going out with one happening she had never had one start while under. i was really hoping i was on to something......... tim |

Title: Re: ha's and scuba Post by Sean_C on Feb 22nd, 2006, 11:12pm I dove there Tanner, pretty cool place ain't it ;;D We tried to go to Saba but we never made it. I never had a problem with Scuba myself, but I have heard of others having an attack after like Lance said. My brother is going to be an instructor Lance, he just came back from the Galapagos Islands. He said it was awesome diving with the whale sharks and hundreds and hundreds of hammer heads ;;D He said you could swim a foot away from the whale sharks, totally awesome creatures, best trip he said he's ever been on ;;D http://www.galapagoscruise.com.ec/index.pl/galapagos-diving Sean............................ |

Title: Re: ha's and scuba Post by doodles on Feb 23rd, 2006, 12:15am Being an instructor for well over 10 years, I experienced the same thing you did. However it always came back later with a vengance. I would imagine the relief came from breathing the higher concentration of oxygen.. remember that when you dive everything is compressed! So you are breathing a higher concentration of nitrogen and oxygen. Not to mention being weightless in a beautiful envirnoment! How could you go wrong?? [smiley=laugh.gif] Janet |

Title: Re: ha's and scuba Post by tanner on Feb 23rd, 2006, 12:22am thanks janet, they always come back with a vengance anyway so i think i'll take the good when i can get it. my neuro, (great one btw) when i called to ask him what he thought of the idea was all for it, he said " it might help or your head might explode". He is a real quality of life kind of guy and i am going to miss him dearly. he is retiring in dec. due to his increasing battle with parkinsons........tim |

Title: Re: ha's and scuba Post by doodles on Feb 23rd, 2006, 2:17am Bummer about your doc... I always feel that if diving brings you joy, do it... if it brings pain...well that's a no brainer. I have tons of wonderful memories of all the live aboard trips I got to share (one or 2 with my dad too) only a few had pounders at the end. Certainly not enough to keep me from going out again! Lucky you...6 months on a tropical island... most I ever got to spend was a week! LOL ;;D |

Title: Re: ha's and scuba Post by Jasmyn on Feb 23rd, 2006, 7:37am Cool place Karma! Old Franky(Jeepgun), don't know when the guy is gonna check in for a change, dives a lot and he has no problems as far as I can remember. I had though, can't take the pressure down there but then again I have equalizing problems with my ear on the ch side. It seems your neuro is correct when he say "it might help or your head might explode". |

What the hell are you doing going to 45 meters within 6 months of learning? That depth is very dangerous for novices, and usually is reserved for technical divers, who dive with trimix and take down 2 or 3 tanks. I too had to hang up my gear, the headaches were just terrible when I surfaced. I am still a certified/renewed instructor, but only go in the water when I'm not in cycle. |

Title: Re: ha's and scuba Post by karma on Feb 23rd, 2006, 9:03am Tim, I don't regularly dive anymore unless it involves some kind of work and usually at less than 50 or 60 feet. I'm episodic and don't have problems other than sinus headaches after diving. |

Title: Re: ha's and scubaI agree with the Post by seasonalboomer on Feb 23rd, 2006, 10:01am Never had any problems diving but have never had the opportunity to dive while in cycle. I agree with Marlinsfan on the depths you were going to. 30-35 meters might be okay as long as you're with very experienced instructors, but not 45 meters as a beginner/intermediate. Not unless you know exactly how quick they can get you to a hyperbaric chamber to cure the bends. Scott |

Title: Re: ha's and scuba Post by tanner on Feb 23rd, 2006, 10:47am good morning all, scott ijust got up and came back to this thread you and marlinsfan are both correct, i didn't need to go back to my log book to see the mistake i made. that was supposed to read 30 to 45 ft. my "deep" dive for qualifiing was only at 60 ft. most of the rec dives were done in little bay at divi where we were helping to build an artificial reef. you can't find more then 40ft anywhere near there. i,m sure i made a couple edgy double tank dives offshore while we were rigging float bags to "fish balls" but in each case i was always diving with very experienced instructors. karma, i almost think i recognize your place..... i'm sure that we must know people in common down there. unfortunately i had a great falling out with the owners of the company i was diving with but still have some friends and reasons to return. you live in a truly wonderful place, but hard when you are used to the states. a single trip to grande marche can set you back more than i make/made in a week..... tim |

Title: Re: ha's and scuba Post by karma on Feb 23rd, 2006, 3:34pm Tim, Sean You think its hard adjusting to the islands. Try adjusting to the states [smiley=laugh.gif] I don't know what you mean about the shopping you just gotta stick to the booze and cigs. The rest is unnecessary. If you were working with the reef balls then I know most everyone and probably the dive company folks as well. My House is in Guana Bay. It was origianly built for Benny Goodman in the late 70's I didn't live there then but I've heard many stories of him serenading the valley with his horn at nite. Give me a shout next time your headed this way. I'm sure I can set you up with what ever you need. |

Any time works for me. Don't need a thing. Smokes are 12 bucks a carton and you have a hard time spending more than 10 bucks for a bottle of booze. The sun is free and I get to see it come up over the ocean every morning. Got a beach I can walk to and it never gets cold. What more could I need? |

Title: Re: ha's and scuba Post by tanner on Feb 23rd, 2006, 5:36pm hey sean, guana bay........very nice! you up the road from al and ramona's place? pity what they are doing to dawn beach. we were down there for the closing of scavengers, like it or not the place was an icon. we were staying on the other side of the hill cote d azur, lowlands. third villa on the right before you get to the french side. are you familiar with the yellow submarine? if so i cut my leg(just a tiny puncture wound as we were rigging it to tow from bobby's marina by the airport. didnt pay it much attention,i mean its not every day you get to tow a sub through a draw bridge, past pelican bay and then sink the thing in little bay. big fun turned into bad staph infection. the dutch docs (who i think are great btw) just couldn't find a way to fix it. after mucking around for a month or so they suggested i either go to the hospital on the french side or maybe back to the states. almost gained a peg from the knee down but the wound is recovering (this is now 5 months later). the moral to that story is {if you cut yourself in simpson bay run don't walk to the nearest antibiotic. I think you might be giving some of these people like jonny too rosy a picture of the place!!!! i mean there are the bad things too, like casinos, clothing optional beaches, world class dining, and you can never find a time day or night when someone isn't trying to hand you an ice cold mini hieny........ cheers tim |
