what are you boiling it for?  a cassarole or stew?  or are you going to broil it after boiling it?

New England Boiled Dinner.

Shoulder, taters, carrots and cabbage.

Not sure when to toss in the other stuff.

Post by Richr8 on Feb 18th, 2006, 5:13pm
... pror to serving would be my guess depending on how finely you cut up the taters and carrots. Let's see if I'm right.  Ladies, Chefs?

Good God - you've become domesticated!  Will wonders never cease! ;;D

BTW - what time is dinner and do we all have time to get there for this scrumptious repast you're preparing!

well, potatoes usually take about 30 minutes to cook if cut in quarters, and I have found they take the longest to cook out of the other veg's, so you could go from there.  :-/

Yuk.

Reminds me of my grandmother's boiled chicken. It made the whole thing come out gray and sticky.

But when will the shoulder be done? Its 3.5 pounds.

1 hour? 2 Hours?

Should have stuck with the George Foreman.

Good God Don, don't you own a freaking cookbook???

According to my CD "Easy Chef's One Million Recipe's", for a 2lb pork shoulder it should be boiled for 1 1/2 hours for a stew, so I would imagine it should be 2 1/2-3hrs for a 3.5 lb?

Title: Re: I'm cooking
Post by Cathi04 on Feb 18th, 2006, 5:31pm
Ok, Chewy.....I may be on the wrong coast, but New England boiled dinner is a fave around here.... minus the parsnips.thankewveryymuch........
I generally use a pork shoulder........3-4#,  I cook it in lightly salted water 2-2.5 hrs, at which point I dump the veggies in and cook another 45 mins.......CEPT the cabbage.that goes in VERY last....only needs about 5 mins to wilt and look awful-which is when it's ready.

Now, ya gonna make it with cornbread??? HMM??? Ya gotta man!!!
Go get some Marie Callendar's mix.......

BTW-remember to add a bit of pepper before serving.and RIGHT NOW, add sage.......and some thyme........some marjoram, too........to enhance the flavor, of course!!!!!!

Cathi

As my son would say, "Chewy's grubbin bigtime tonight!!"..........ENJOY!

1 pound boneless lean pork shoulder
1 large onion, chopped
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried rosemary
2 cups water
3 medium carrots, sliced
1 large green bell pepper, cut into 1 inch pieces
3 cups mushrooms, halved
1/2 cup burgundy wine
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
Trim any excess fat from pork shoulder and cut into 1-inch cubes. Spray a large soup pot (or Dutch oven) with nonstick cooking spray and heat over medium heat until hot. Add pork and cook over medium heat until brown. Stir in onion, basil, rosemary and water and heat to boiling. Reduce heat, cover and simmer about 1 hour or until pork is almost tender. Add remaining ingredients, cover and simmer about 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally.

Makes 6 Servings
Serving Size: 12 ounces

Cooking pork and not cooking it properly can be dangerous. I've never heard of boiling pork, but then again who knows. Use a meat therm. and check on the internet when the pork will be considered done---I believe it is @ 180 degrees. I have 3 different grills outside and I use them 24/7/365..would suggest that you do the same..........Boiling sausage-???--I guess you're not Italian.

Charlie's Meatloaf

I haven't posted my meatloaf recipe in awhile:

Chisel out enough room in the microwave for your thawed beefalo; the stuff in back, not the package from 1998, leave in plastic tray. Mix with Hamburger Helper, onion sticks, and Ketchup enhanced green tomato paste. Toss in some fake salt and Bacon Bits if you wanna go nuts.

Pound on the microwave key pad to set the sticky timer--you probably can't so forget this step. Head for the couch, pop in one of your Celebrity Poker videos and relax. When the smoke alarm goes off, it's done.

After you've satisfied your neighbors and the fire trucks have gone, take out the meatloaf. I usually find that it's a bit easier to separate the melted plastic from the meatloaf if you run it under cold water.

Poke around in the cupboard for an unprententious wine cooler, grab your Ron Popiel's electric knife, set up your TV tray, select one of your C-SPAN book tour videos and enjoy.

Serves you right one...only once, so far. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/fork drink.gif

Charlie...  too funny.  I was just going to post about how me and you are pro microwave chefs.  ;)  5 minute microwave wonders...

Closest I generally get to cooking is boiling vermicelli on the stove for 8 minutes.  LOL

I have never made anything on the Foreman that was worth eating...  Used to make bbq chicken on it all the time, but it was constantly so dried out (in order to cook it thoroughly enough) that it tasted positively awful!  Made steak on it once, too...that was a mistake.

If I knew how to cook things that didn't make servings for 12 in a household of 1...I 'spose it wouldn't be so bad!!

Microwave Swanson Chicken Pot Pie:  (I've actually done this)

Take the pie out of the aluminum foil unless you want excitement; place it in a little Corelle bowl (fits like a glove) and that inside a Pyrex covered bowl. Let her rip.

Pasty looking chicken pot soup in 3 minutes.....tastes ok.
