Title: Anyone watch House?
Post by Gena on Feb 15th, 2006, 9:23am
House is a Doctor that only takes cases that nobody else can figure out,
Last night he was trying to prove that a new migraine med that you take once a month did not work.
So he gave his self a migraine – and of course he was right the medicine did not work.
The best part was watching how he tried to abort the HA, he main lined verap.
And when that did not work, he used LSD.
He started tripping – and then to abort the trip he took anti depression medication.
I know it was not about CH but found it interesting anyway.

Wow!  Wish I'd set up to record that one.  Honestly I forgot it was on because I'm working nights this week, but that's probably one of my top two favorite shows on tv.  My boyfriend loves it too, since he may be going into pathology, which is a lot of diagnostic stuff.

Maybe my parents recorded it on DVR...  I'll have to ask them!

Don't you think we all need a doctor like House?  I'm thinking at least for me, he'd probably be the only person who could put together all the pieces and just MAYBE find some answers!!

Plus he's hot.  :)

Carrie :)

Yeah, I watched it. After he took the second injection and started trippin' I was making guesses but didn't pick the LSD. Kind of wacky.

Gena my first guess was LSD... my daughter of course asked me about it.

Next thing I asked myself... why didn't he try oxygen?

House is a smartie pants ( I LOVE THIS CHARACTER/SHOW) but I think he has a lot to learn.

Hey BobP, this is the show I was talking about!

From a medical accuracy standpoint, the show is often REALLY off base, but it is usually based on truth, and a lot of the basics about the diseases they portray are true - just not really how tests are run, who runs tests, certain effects, etc.  If you're going for medical accuracy from the main medical shows on TV, "ER" is actually the most accurate out of ER, House, Grey's Anatomy, and Scrubs.

But the drama and stories on House totally kick ass!!!

I didn't write that in reference to anything specific in last night's episode in case anyone misinterprets - since I didn't even see the episode yet!  I've seen most of the other ones though, and sometimes there are some far reaching things in the show!  haha  Probably justifies why he wouldn't jump to something as logical as trying O2 instead of verapamil injections!  ;)

I guess what really peeked my intrest was the whole anti depresent thing.

If you are taking LSD to abort, once it has done its job can you take, say zoloft to then abort and trip you might be experiancing? Also, would that work if you were doing LSD as a prevent.

Just asking how medically sound it is?

Gena, excellent point.  I wondered the same thing....

I think this is interesting, especially if antidepressants can be used safely as a follow up to treatment.

LSD and psilocybin (sp?) are related to the substance that aborts/prevents a cluster - if that substance is isolated (which is what the whole busters research thing is about) and can be used in this way, I'd say that would be a wonderful thing...

Well, just thinking it out here, if that combo is a no-no, I'm dead wrong.  But if it wasn't, wouldn't that be somethin'?

I taped it. Here's the story...

House reads about a new drug in an obscure medical journal from India that's a "breakthrough" which prevents migraines without daily administration. The HA doctor who wrote it is being paid by a drug company.

House injects the drug into a patient who's been in a coma for 2 years, then injects the coma patient with nitroglycerin and induces a migraine to prove that the drug doesn't work.

House goes to a lecture by the HA doc and says no drug can prevent migraines without daily administration and that he proved it in a coma patient. The HA doc said you need live conscious people for it to work.
House injects himself with the new migraine drug, then injects himself with nitroglycerin and induces a migraine. A while later, his neuro friend injects him with "sumatriptan for pain and verapamil so it doesn't recover".

Later, he gets another screaming migraine. He says he's going to take an aspirin and goes to the locker room and takes a shower. When he gets out of the shower he's hallucinating. He says he's hallucinating and he saw music. Later, another doc asks him "Did you drop acid?" He says "LSD acts on the serotonin receptors in the brain which can stop a migraine in its tracks". Later when he's feeling normal, a doc says LSD lasts 12 hours. Why isn't he still hallucinating? He says he took a bunch of antidepressants that short-circuited the LSD.

Note: Clusterbusters.com says that antidepressants (SSRI's) block the effects of LSD, although I doubt that it would have that effect so soon.

My son told me that the actor that plays House is English, and that he has mastered the 'American' accent. (quotes because I think every one else has an accent, not americans, hmph hmph hmph)
Does any one know if this is true?

True, Steve. There's another thread on this somewhere and it talks about his BBC shows, I think.

I love House. I think he did a great job of showing what a Migrain can do to someone. Except I don't know to many people who do their work laying on the floor in a dark room. Not many people who have that bad a migrain can not  even talk or want to talk.
I would like to see him do one with clusters, bet he would destroy his office or worst LOL

Fascinating stuff - think Hugh Lawrie practiced the accent (badly) in Stuart Little the Disney(?) mouse movie.

Have a feeling that when Andrew Sewell's research starts getting published the LSD/headache thing is going to be all over the media.  Also think a lot of research was done on this in the 1950-60s showing it does seem to work.

Also, if you some of you lot get choice TV series before us - Lost what on earth is that all about then?

Its his attitude that gets it done for me.  I like how they go about thier brain storming but its really not even close to accurate in real life hospital workings.

Sheesh, anoth er post lost... what I said is I saw him on an awards show and that's when I first heard him speak (love his accent!)
Though I'm a fan, I didn't know he was British until the awards show but I knew he was a winner!

Hope you're well,
Pep
