Title: ? about cluster in US +forgot to add Post by Svenn on Feb 11th, 2006, 2:47am Is there a way to find out how many clusterheads there are in the US "See example in bottom here" How many have heard about O2 and are using O2 as their first line defence before other meds as triptans etcetc against clusterheadaches? Example: We are 4,5 mill Norwegians and stats say 4000 ch,heads and out of those there are expected to be around 1000 "guess and no stats"that are using O2 as their first line defence against clusterheadaches ? Any help with this will be highly apreciated Svenn Edit: There is suppose to be some 500000 people in Norway with migraines,if that is of any interest |

Title: Re: ? about cluster in US Post by KingOfPain on Feb 11th, 2006, 8:10am Svenn, Here are a couple sources for numbers. I don't know how accurate these figures are. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "Although the exact U.S. incidence isn't known, an estimated 500,000 to 2 million Americans experience cluster headaches". http://www.pdrhealth.com/content/women_health/chapters/fgwh14.shtml --------------------------------------------------------------------- "There are an estimated one million cluster headache sufferers in the United States, of whom 10 percent are afflicted with chronic cluster". http://www.idph.state.il.us/about/womenshealth/factsheets/headaches.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------- As far as percentages of O2, not sure. Hope this helps some. |

No stats for you Svenn but personal experience from where visit was to introduce a preventative med right away with of course supplemented abortives, oxygen and a quantity of a triptan. I went in there living off the hell of abortives only, which was luckily and gratefully corrected. |

Title: Re: ? about cluster in US Post by Sean_C on Feb 11th, 2006, 4:47pm I've been off the synthetics for a while now Svenn. My first line of defense is the Clustermasx (http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~tritech2/clusterx/index.html) with ice if I have it. I would say my pain ratio is the same as with the abortives and at best the clusters last 20 minutes. As for the 2 million people in the US with Ch I still disagree with that stat. Title: Re: ? about cluster in US Post by E-Double on Feb 11th, 2006, 5:55pm I did some basic math based on the following: http://www.census.gov/population/www/popclockus.html http://www.w-h-a.org/wha2/NewSite/resultsnav.asp?color=C2D9F2&idContentNews=421 If we currently have 298,089,075 people in the US & it is estimated that .1 to .4 % has CH = at least 2,980,897 people have CH in US so........ There must be 100 million migraineurs the way research is distributed. Does that include the million who get misdiagnosed with CH when they have icepicks or PH? Or the migraineurs who are dxed with CH or the millions who do not get diagnosed ever or not for decades? There can not be that many people in this country who are in such agony and nothing is done to help!!!!!!!! |

Title: Re: ? about cluster in US Post by BlueMeanie on Feb 11th, 2006, 6:47pm I believe you forgot to add a "0" to your % EE. You're saying 1/100 people get CH. I find that waaay hard to believe. It's more like 1/1000 which means 1/10th of 1% or 4/10ths of 1%. Using those figures there would actually be somewhere between 298,089 to 1,192,356 people in the U.S. with CH. Chronics are 1/10 the CH population which means their are only between 29,808 to 119,235 Chronics. That's why CH's are not publisized much, because the majority are episodics and just deal with their 8 weeks of pain then take their 2-3 years off. Just my 2 cents. |

.1 *298089075=29808907.5/100= 298,089.075 ooops!! So that would mean there are approximately 300 thousand of us in the USA. Where did they get 2 million other than screwing up the basic math as I did. Some teacher I am :-[smiley=laugh.gif] glad I don't teach math further than 1:1 correspondence and number identification ;;D Thanks Blue |

Title: Re: ? about cluster in US +forgot to add Post by floridian on Feb 12th, 2006, 10:33am Svenn, one problems with these statistics is that some calculate it for people that ever get clusters (lifetime incidence) and others calculate it for people that have had clusters within the past year (annual incidence) or past 3 years, or 5 years. http://www.med-owl.com/clusterheadaches/tiki-index.php?page=How%20Common%20are%20Clusters |

Title: Re: ? about cluster in US +forgot to add Post by Lizzie2 on Feb 12th, 2006, 11:09am E, I think the old statistic for migraine in the US is 28 million Americans, but then it was raised to either 32 or 35 million Americans. I'd have to look it up, iffin you are REALLY interested! I had quoted the 28 mill in my research initially, and then after going to AHS made some adjustments. That's the only stat I know of. And there's also a stat for how many migraineurs should be on preventative treatment - as quoted by Dr. Stephen Silberstein. That's another one I'd have to dig out. Unfortunately, doesn't really answer the question though. I have more stats on the prevalence of migraine than on prevalence of CH. L2 :) |

Title: Re: ? about cluster in US +forgot to add Post by Svenn on Feb 12th, 2006, 11:24am We all know there is a LOT of greys in ALL statistics, but what is interesting to know is an estimate on how many clusterheads there are in US and how many % of those that are using O2 as their first line defence against clusterheadaches. Hopefully some reliable numbers Svenn |

Title: Re: ? about cluster in US +forgot to add Post by MJ on Feb 12th, 2006, 1:36pm I may be wrong but the statistics for CH are only estimates. Where did those estimates come from?? Are they 1 in 1000 patients who saw doctors or were they derived from a general population census? The statistics for the value of 02 in "known" sufferers is something like 70% that get benefit. Now in my logic with a few other factors put in and if I were estimating for money If you take the best quesstimates of CH populations and look at CHers who come to this site and remembering their initial knowledge of 02. Hearing pharmacy stats from my friend the local pharmacist serving an est. 11,000 adult pop base with only 2 known CH sufferers including myself. (.002%) Talking with local med 02 supplier who says only one CHer comes to mind in wider area of 50,000 population using his product. Then I would over guesstimate that maybe 40% of those diagnosed with CH would actually use 02 as 1st line defense. I am not one of them. My "thoughts" for whatever they are worth. Skewered or not MJ |
