Title: Medical info needed Post by thebbz on Feb 8th, 2006, 7:59pm :-/ Hey all, So I am the designated responsible party for my Aunt who thinks it is 1987 and she's in Santa Monica. (She lived there over 30 years ago.) Many other compounding ortho problems, colosotomy, lymphoma, double knee replacements and on. Six weeks ago she had a failed ortho device replaced and was doing well.(knee) She was not ambulatory and under going assisted PT. Last thursday night she fell, going to the restroom. They called on Friday and informed me of xrays ordered for her knees. These were negative. We visited Friday , Saturday and she was on bedrest so we just talked and did not examine her ourselves. On Tuesday I get a call and she was undergoing xrays for a hip complaint. We visited and were waiting for the results. We noted her wrap and bedding was soiled and dry. I bitched to the nurse and questioned the status of treatment. This was bedrest since Friday, and monitor. The xrays revieled a spiral fracture of the femur below the ball appox 3 to 4 inches. The ends of the bones showed the ends overlapping in a fashion that would indicate weigh was put on it and it shoved it in a lap position. Upon examination at the ER there was swelling almost triple of normal and deep extensive bruising all around the affected area. ( nowhere near the knee. Is this right? Is it acceptable for a Skilled Nursing Facility to not catch this at the first examination post event? Obviously she couldn't walk on it. I know there are nurses here and possibly doctors. Please I dont know what to do...shoot first? Is this irresponsablity? Is it my fault because we didn't examine her ourselves? This sucks major and I don't have the expertise to judge. I am however very pI$$ed! Any input would help and thanks in advance. jb |

Title: Re: Medical info needed Post by BarbaraD on Feb 8th, 2006, 8:30pm As I understand this, she is in a Nursing Home (Skilled Nursing Facility)??? Ok, time to take ACTION. NO - it is THEIR responsibility to EXAMINE her - that's called SKILLED NURSING! Time to go see the Administrator (or a lawyer FIRST - get some advice - I don't know what state you're in and am too lazy to look it up). I'd notify the STATE nursing home administration (or whatever it's called in your state) and then raise me some merry HELL! They TRIED to do something like this to Bill and even my grandson saw Granny get her pants in a wad. I had the name of the nurse on duty threatening to have her license revoked (and should have) and the administor of the "skilled nursing facility" was taking valium before I was thru with her, but after that he got "excellent" treatment the few more days he was in there. They never knew what time I was going to show up to check on them. They let him go without neurotin for 24 hours (cold turkey) because the damn nurse didn't know she could pick up the phone (after I explained it to her even) and call the doc to give her an RX for it (apparently he forgot). And she told ME I couldn't give him his meds -- honey stand back and watch me! That's when I got her number off her license and threatened her. Told her she had to give the number to me (don't know if that was true or not, but apparently she didn't know either so she gave it to me). Sorry, didn't mean to get on a rampage, but this gets me stirred up. Don't sit back and do nothing. These places have NO right to treat elderly people this way - they're getting paid dearly to TAKE CARE of them and by gosh they should be held to task. Let me know if I can do anything to help you... Hope your Aunt gets better. Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Medical info needed Post by Lizzie2 on Feb 8th, 2006, 8:43pm Speak up... Get your thoughts, facts, documentation together - consult a lawyer if you want to, but I'd go beyond the director of the nursing home. OR you could talk to the nursing home director, find out what they're going to do about it, and then tell them that if such and such isn't done, then you're going to report this to the higher authorities. Make sure you get a copy of the medical record so you can see anything written in it. As a note of caution, incident reports won't be a part of the medical record - not sure how to obtain that, but it does not go in the medical record. The incident should be documented, but you'll probably not find an actual official report in her record - that goes to the facility. There's no excuse for this. Maybe someone just messed up - but still, it should at least be examined and checked into, IMHO. So sorry to hear this happened to you!!! Carrie |

Title: Re: Medical info needed Post by thebbz on Feb 9th, 2006, 10:00pm Threatened the Ortho surgeon today with ultimatum. Surgery tomorrow or I call the ambulance have her transferred to UCSF as an emergency right now. After some stammering and reviewing the chart he agreed. I spoke with her social services case worker with the county. I have to request all the documentation from the nursing facility and review in a care meeting. Then comes out the big guns pending the review of the fact. Thanks to all I know I can always count on my cluster crew. BB: Still owe you a trip..you know what I mean.
