Title: Something to KNOW about......
Post by BarbaraD on Feb 7th, 2006, 5:03pm
I knew about the red light on cars, but not the *677. It was about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. *Lauren's parents have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc *

Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called 677 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way.

Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her.

One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.

I never knew about the *677 Cell Phone Feature, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a safe & active place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them (i.e. put on your hazard lights) or call *677 like Lauren did.

Too bad the cell phone companies don't generally give you this little bit of wonderful information.

*Speaking to a service representative at **Bell** Mobility confirmed that *67 7 was a direct link to State Police Dispatch. So, now it's your turn to let your friends know about *677.

**This was sent to me in an e-mail. I haven't checked it out with ALtell, but will. This world is getting scarey... Hugs BD

Oh, honey, I'm sorry, didn't realize it was you. Sorry to spoil your "fun". I know you didn't mean any "harm". But you know how the other kids are when they start trying to "copy" you - they always get it out of hand and someone gets hurt. Just didn't want no foolishment.... :D

Hugs Mom...

Seriously Mom.....its a good message you posted, I would bet more than half of people would just pull over.

Keep in mind folks, cops only use blue lights, not red.....if im wrong Jimi will correct me.

I don't know if *677 is true and works in all areas, but I do not if a woman is driving alone, especially after dark - do not pull over for an unmarked car with flashing red or blue lights.  A friend of mine, being a law abiding citizen did pull over, but had the sense to lock her doors and roll her window down only 1".  A non-uniformed man walked up to her window and demanded that she roll it down and give him her license and registration.  She refused and said he could follow her to the next, well lighted, very public area.  He put his fingers through that 1" gap and proceeded to try and pull her window out.  She put the car in gear and drove off like a bat out of hell leaving a little of his blood on her window.  She did stop at the next well lighted gas station, ran in and asked the attendant to call the police.  There were no cops, marked or unmarked in that area.  She had no cell phone.  She was lucky.  So moral is, ladies, do not stop for an unmarked car no matter what.  The idea about turning on the hazard lights is great.

it doesn't even have to be a fake cop, Barbara you should know Larry Adcock from Atlanta, he was a state trooper. He was pulling women over on 77 after they left the bar on the La. state line, and gave them the choice of either going to jail or putting out. I know 2 women he did this to but there were 7 or 8 that came forward after he was arrested, he got 6 months probation for abuse of power. Nothing like small town justice is there?

Speaking only for the state of California, a blue light is not required. The only REQUIREMENT for an emergency vehicle in California is a steady red light facing forward, and a siren. Most cop cars also have the red and blue flashy lights but the only required light is a steady forward facing red. California also allows you to pull to a well lit public place before you stop. As with all law enforcement contacts, your attitude is everything!

I think I liked the days when the cops were older than I was... :P I have a little trouble taking some of these young ones seriously...

And what's wrong with picking up hitch=hickers? You meet such "interesting" people that way.....

Hugs BD

Seriously, I'd check with the cell phone co's and see if the 677 number is a working thingy... It might save a life here and there if it is. At least keep the motor running and Don't GEt OUT OF THE CAR for any reason! Even I KNOW that!

I'm not Jimi but...these are what different lights mean in NY state......according to one website but our amblulances use red lights
A flashing blue light indicates a volunteer fire fighter responding to an emergency call.
A flashing green light indicates a volunteer ambulance service member responding to an emergency call.
A flashing amber light, indicates a hazard vehicle engaged in a hazardous operation (i.e., snowplow, tow-truck, utility company vehicle).

An emergency vehicle is defined as a police vehicle, ambulance or fire truck. These vehicles may have red, white or a combination of red and white lights which, when responding to an emergency, are constantly moving. (See Section 375 (41) of the Vehicle & Traffic Law.)

from Snopes.com..type in *677 for more heres a paragragh....I love snopes.com.....
Whether this particular tale is true or not, women driving alone have been sexually assaulted by rapists pretending to be patrolmen (and in certain rare cases by actual police officers), so the advice it gives about not pulling over in deserted areas when signaled to do so by unmarked police vehicles is well worth heeding. Throw on your flashers, slow down, and keep driving until you get to a well-lit area where there are others about. Though you might subsequently be charged for failing to heed a police officer's commands, you will avoid the potential for harm. Call 911 and tell them what's happening, asking them to relay to the officer in pursuit your intent to continue traveling until a populated has been reached. (Although in some U.S. states, #77 on a cell phone will immediately connect you to that state's highway patrol, that code is not universal. Some states use #77, but others use *55, *47, or *HP, and some don't have any special code at all. Rather than frantically try to figure out which one will work in the area you're in, get around the problem by going straight to
911.)

That's so good to know. Me and two of my friends are planning a road trip across USA, so info like that is useful for the future. :)

And I'll be asking tons of questions when we have decided the the states & cities we'll be visiting, the route and schedule. But before that those two will have to learn how to drive! I won't be driving all that way myself! ;;D

Best wishes,
Sanna

Any time, any police officer, real or otherwise, tries to pull you over, you should signal to acknowledge the officer's command, and pull off the road in a safe area.  This is the rule of the road for most states, and a police officer shouldn't ticket you for failure to pull over as long as you signal in some way.  Of course, you prolly shouldn't try to drive clear to the next state before pulling over... Cops tend to get a bit pissed when ya do that.
