I think I am "on" to something good and looking for pros/cons of an online business IF YOU HAVE ONE. I'm trying to work out the kinks before they begin.

I just can't stomach the thought of working for someone again (though I may have an interview soon with a govt. contractor)

I've been doing some serious research, got some seminars lined up to attend and am really planning the whole thing out before I begin. Can't tell y'all what it is just yet, but you all will be the first to know!

We've had an online/catalog business going for several years now. I can help with most of your basic questions and give you a heads up on key issues to plan for and/or be aware of.

Email me if you would like some basic guidance. I don't need to know what you're business idea is to help.

I used to have one but didn't have the time to keep up.

My bit of advise is simple.

Have a well thought out and documented business plan in place.

Chewy, you're absolutely right. One of the seminars I am attending later this month is a "Business Plan Workshop" and I have been working on all the details for the last week or so. But I sure could use some guidance - luckily, I found the seminars low-cost and in my area.

I found a lot of "Business Plan" resources and even some templates by searching around the web.

Also check the Small Business Administration website.

Try this: Type "Business Plan" in the search box.

What general online sector is it in? Ebay, retail, affiliate, adsense, ??

Hubby runs an online biz.

Its more than a fulltime job, but he loves the fact that all his efforts benefits him and not someone else.

The secret is finding a niche and doing it well.

none of the above. Will be setting up thru (possibly) highpowersites.com.

Jenny G- would you say that, financially, it is worth it? I think I may have found a niche that definitely needs filling, and I am just the woman to do it.

Hubby says a bad day working for yourself is better than a good day working for someone else.

I went back to work full-time so hubby could start the business. The business revenue is doubling every month, and soon I'll be able work for him.

If you can afford to do it, do it, it sounds like you have the ambition and confidence and that is the main ingredient in success. Take baby steps, do your homework, find out who your competition is and kick their ass!

affording to do it: that's why I'm selling my GWTW first edition, first printing, very rare.

baby steps and homework: you betcha! As badly as I want to just jump right in, I'm smart enough to know that there is a lot I don't know.

kick their ass: Like I said, I am the woman to do it! I think I found the loophole all the "others" missed, and I am going to work it for all its worth! woohoo! Can somebody give me a ~~cha-ching~~ amen?!

Hi Jen best of luck to you.

I too, a computer idiot, am starting to get an online portion of my business going.

I have recentlly started my 5th business venture, each one started bare bones.
One went belly up. Three were sold outright. One was sold to employees.

Some advice:

The biggest plan you should make is plan to make mistakes.

If you havent had a business before definately study up get your books in order, tax liscenses etc..., but work out the kinks "as you go" or you may talk yourself out of business.

A small business plan is allways good to show to others. Plan on changing that plan tommorrow.

And lastly never ever think you are the boss because before as an employee you may have had one or two bosses. With customers you will have hundreds of bosses and they are the ones that will determine your success or failure.

Stay flexible.

In business knowledge must be available and you need to know where to go for answers but it is secondary to service.

Some of the greatest rescources for help and information are free. Your state and federal governments all have millions of dollars invested in providing you the help and knowledge to succeed. Check the websites, make some phonecalls. A lot of private seminars are a repeat of this free help and information.

Never be afraid to ask for help. I once invited the IRS to help me out and it saved me thousands years ago. They send you to a public accountant now. Your product suppliers are also a great source of info.

SBA is worthless unless you are in the 25 mill sales range or above.
