Title: Ladies, did you know...
Post by Jasmyn on Feb 3rd, 2006, 7:22pm
Pregnancy test may lie behind deadly frog fungus:
Not Mad Cow Disease but the latest is a Crazy Frog Disease:

Quote:
The clinical signs are obvious to experts: crazy frogs.

That test involved taking the urine of a woman and injecting it into an African clawed frog. If the woman was pregnant the hormones in her urine would stimulate ovulation in the frog and it would spawn within a matter of hours.

Sorry I know I should have made the address shorter with that other mini thingamajig but it is 2:20am in the morning and I just don't feel like it, so call me lazy ;)

PS:  So now you know what to do when you run out of pregnancy tests [smiley=laugh.gif]

Just what sort of thing is a person thinking of when they come up with the idea to inject a frog with urine????  How fucked up is THAT??

lessee, go to a pet store (find one that sells African clawed frogs), Lay down the $300 bucks to buy it. Inject the frog with urine cover and wait a few hours to find out that she may NOT be pregnant. The $300 is better spent on a blood test, no?  [smiley=huh.gif] :P

LOL...Its blowing my mind that someone has figured out how to tell if a human woman is pregnant by injecting a specific breed of frog with her urine... I assume this information is obtained in the ongoing fight against Cancer and/or CH... HOLY S*it BATMAN!  :D [smiley=ohjez.gif]

LOL...I don't mean any offense, but who comes up with this stuff? How much does it pay? and I thought those drugs were illegal.... :-X

Whatever happened to determining if a woman is pregnant the old fashioned way - waiting a couple of months to see if she starts ballooning???   :-/

Let’s see…..we have urine, African clawed frogs, hormones, injections and spawnning.

Jasmyn, just what were you looking for when you found that?

::)

Bus, yip, African Clawed Frogs were and I believe are still used extensively in labs all around the world for medical research.

More info can be found here as to their history and purpose:

http://www.ijdb.ehu.es/fullaccess/fulltext.feb00/GURDON.pdf#search='African%20Clawed%20Frog%20History%20Pregnancy%20Test'

They are also used as pets in many countries and it seems now that all amphibians are on the decline due to this fungal disease that they originally carried and being exported with these little critters.

Mel, that's scientists for you but then again they sometimes save life's like that.

Sandy this was the old fashioned modern way of testing for pregnancy... times changed and people with it, modern man wants quick answers and quick information.

Jenny if we can only find the cure in a frog but strangely we are still the guinea pigs.

Now Bob, yes sometimes I feel like my hormones are running away with me and all I can think of is spawning and yes, I live in Africa and it's bloody hot but I was actually going through some news articles when I came across this one and I knew for some Biology/Science junkies like me and some of my own gender here will find it interesting.  Good to know where fertility testing came from and NO I'm too old and sporty to spawn any more young-lings :P
