Title: What do you think? (not CH)
Post by Melissa on Feb 3rd, 2006, 9:57am
Ok, I have been thinking about how I can make some extra money due to hubby probably losing his job in 4-5 years.  At first, I had thought about knitting camouflage (hunting colors) adult & baby afghans, but now am leaning toward a more luxurious knitted chenille.

I LOVE chenille, so it would be a joy to knit!  What do you think would be more popular??

thanks!
:)melly

p.s. forgot to add, I will also do a cashmere baby afghan twice a year.

I think the camouflage baby stuff sounds adorable.  It's more unique, and with the hunting culture being what it is around here, I think it has the greatest sales potential...maybe even in catalogues.  I can picture it not just in baby stores, but at "Outdoors" conventions.

Well yes, you do have a point.  I just hate that the yarn is acrylic, and not too snuggly for a baby. :-/

It's not much for me to do an afghan and matching hat in camo, but I wonder how popular it would be within other states other than us northerners?  I know it would be excellent if I were to do a booth at like, the Wausau mall just before Christmas, but beyond WI, MI, MN, IL, etc??

Do Camo, chenille. I'm sure someone sells it somewhere. Mom's and Dads alike would buy it for their kids. just thought I'd through that to ya. ;;D

There are plenty of baby stores around which would probabaly take your stuff on commission, or even just buy it from you.  You just need to start locating them, and find out who to contact at each store for when the time comes that you have enough inventory to keep them stocked.  It's not uncommon for stores to sell on commission.  If you can't build up enough inventory, then you could always just concentrate on the Christmas season, hunting season, or even do a once or twice a year sale out of your home.  I know a woman who does hand-painted furniture, and sells it just at Christmastime out of her home, and she does quite well.

Wonderful suggestions Patti!  Thank you so much for giving me a few ideas.  Although since I am quite new at this, I will start small with eBay, but maybe by the time hubby loses his job, I'll be an expert at it and make us some nice extra $$$$.

Can't you use cotton or is it too thin to work with?

I could, but it wouldn't be cozy nor warm enough as the thread itself is much more tightly bound than acrylic.  Cotton works well for dishcloths and towels, but not knitted blankets.

Holy CRAP, you guys are going to keep me busy for like, 5 years!!! [smiley=laugh.gif]

I have a feeling arthritis is just around the corner... :-[

BTW, when I get them completed, they're going up on eBay, as that was what I was gonna do to begin with, but it's going to take me a few months to complete them.  (I only gots 2 hands and 8 fingers ya know!)

Tracey, Cashmere will NOT be cheap, do you know what the yarn is selling for? :o  Now alpaca is just as soft, but if what you want is cashmere, you better open up your pocketbook. ;) ;;D  BTW, are you gonna be a GRAMMA, or are you pregnant????? :D ;;D ;;D

Jonny- I'll pencil you in for 2008. ;;D

OMG, ROTFLMAO!  Yes Bus, it is. [smiley=laugh.gif]  A full size afghan will take me at least a month or two to complete, LOL.  Also, for one skein (ball) of alpaca yarn costs about $25, and that's off eBay.  Then, you need at LEAST 5 skeins to make a full size afghan, and that is only doing a single strand of yarn.  Multiply that times the hours it takes to knit one, and guess how much it would cost for an alpaca blanket?  Around $200-$300 is my guess...

At the Mall of America, they had a store with nothing but alpaca products.  OMG the stuff was SOOOOOO soft!!!  BUT, extremely pricey.  They had a huge tiger alpaca blanket I would have loved, but it was like, $650! :o

Insane

Here is a baby blanket (for hubby's cousins wife, who's due in April) I'm working on right now with just a plain and simple purl stitch...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v708/mfiltz/babyblanket.jpg

The blankets I'll be making will have block patterns to them, with a knit & purl stitch, to give them some definition.

Gotta go for now, it's Lily's Karate Tournament Fun Day today! :D

TTFN!

Sell on e-bay, from home, at craft fairs would be OK, I think.  But, I'm pretty sure that retail baby stores would have to sell only government approved fire-retardant baby clothing, so these might be off limits to you, unless you can make them fire-retardant and get approval.

And I'm from NC - folks hunt down here too!

Yup!  Sandy's right.  That is mainly why I like eBay.  That, and I don't want to really become a "business" and have to pay taxes due to carrying an inventory, etc. ;)

You guys are great with the feedback, thank you so much!!!!
