Title: WHAT NEXT??????? Post by BarbaraD on Jan 31st, 2006, 2:40pm Well, it appears our African American friends have found something else to be pissed off about. A black congresswoman (this would be Sheila Jackson Lee, of Houston) reportedly complained that the names of hurricanes are all Caucasian- sounding names. She would prefer some names that reflect African -American culture such as Chamiqua, Woeisha, and Jamal. I can hear it now: A black weatherman in Houston saying... "Wordup, Muthas! Herr-i-cane Chamiqua be headin' fo' Galveston like Leroy on a crotch rocket! Bitch be a category fo'! So, turn off dem chitlins, grab yo' chirren, leave yo crib, and head fo' de nearest FEMA office fo yo FREE shit". |

Barbara will be the second eastern north Pacific tropical cyclone name for the 2007 season, and again in 2013 and so forth every 6 years as long as Barbara don't do too much damage. Has anyone ever looked at the tropical cyclone name lists (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml)? New discoveries in the extended space beyond Pluto are now using more universal deities and fabled character names instead of just Greek and Roman mythology or Shakespearian characters. The IAU has a worldwide catalogue for naming now from myths of worldwide cultures past and present. A few being Quaoar, Varuna, and Ixion, but these are not names for use in daily public weather newcasts. |

A good friend of mine from nursing school is from Africa, and one day we were discussing baby names. She said, "Most of those names aren't AFRICAN anyways. They're just random 'names' people made up to make it sound ethnic." After the names I've seen.... yeah... But I would say one thing in seriousness - just please remember that not every African American "behaves" like this or views the world this way, just as not every White American participated in acts of racism in times past. A few years ago now, I became best friends with a guy I dated for about a year and a half named James. Some of you have seen a couple of our pics. He's a 6'2" black guy from Philly, and I'm a 5'2" white girl from the suburbs. We met because we had the same job in the ER, and I randomly asked him to be my date for 2 weddings in the same weekend - not really even expecting him to say yes! We really enjoyed the weekend and ended up dating shortly after that. In the beginning, times were a little rough because I felt James was looking at me as a white girl who grew up in the suburbs - and therefore a rich girl who never had a single problem in her life. We actually used to have a number of arguments over it, but we really got past it and had such a wonderful relationship, but more importantly - friendship. He's listed as my emergency contact for medical things - next in line only to my parents. He stayed after work a number of times to look out for me when I was in the ER as a patient, and he called my parents when I had a severe medication reaction and was unable to speak for myself. My parents love James as much as I do. He'll always be one of my best friends and one of the most wonderful people I've ever met. That's just one person, but I guess working in the heart of a big city, there are constantly mixes of all races, creeds, socioeconomic classes, etc. Yes, I've been treated with racism on the part of some blacks in the city, but I could never make a blanket statement based on this about all black people. Some of the most loving, closest friends I've had are black. It's not the race - it's the individual. We are all given the same opportunities to treat others with respect, kindness, and love. (Yeah...I sound like a hippie...!) Not trying to detract from your humour by writing something serious, but I just really felt I had to say it. Please don't take offense. Hugz, Carrie :) |

They want the BIG half. Heck, I was around during the 60s (don't know if I was a hippie, but did my part for civil rights and all that) and "equality" doesn't mean wiping out the "white" race or "giving" to someone because one of their ancestors "Might" have been a slave. I think it's about time people started "Earning" what they get. Nobody "Owes" anyone a damn thing. I've been listening to the news again.... Entitlement programs... education fixes.... one fix after another.... the government knows best -- yeah right. And we MUST be politically correct in all things or ELSE!
