Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by minnie on Jan 30th, 2006, 10:44pm Mike I am so sorry to hear that.I will keep her in my prayers.Something to think about is not only healing the outside but the inside.I can only imagine how scared and confused she must be about dogs now.I hope she is able to work out any fears.I will be praying for all involved her,her family and I can imagine how upset the dogs handler must be.It might be hard to see right now but the officer probably relives the moment too and wishes it was him attacked and not her. Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by BarbaraD on Jan 31st, 2006, 8:05am That's terrible. If the dog spooks that easy he shouldn't have been around a grade school. I'm with Bob -- get lots of pics, witnesses statements and a good lawyer. There's no excuse for this.... Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by JJA on Jan 31st, 2006, 9:15am Even though I think it's important to teach 6th graders how to package their drugs so drug dogs can't detect them, maybe there's a better way to allocate the police budget.::) One more victim of the drug war.... Sorry Jesse |

Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by seasonalboomer on Jan 31st, 2006, 9:24am evidence of what is often a waste of police resources, doing touchy feely community stuff. the dog should not have been relied upon as Public Relations tool. Companion/Service dogs are the only dogs trained for this type of activity. it's a shame for your niece as well as the dog and the officer involved. the officer would probably admit that placing a dog in this type of environment is outside of the scope of what the dog has been trained for. misplaced priorities of local government. and what would the kids learn? that people try to hide drugs and this dog will find it? wow! that was worth it. sad. scott |

Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by juvy on Jan 31st, 2006, 10:07am that's horrible. they really should have the dogs muzzled when they're not in use. Sending vibes for a speedy recovery. |

Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by Lizzie2 on Jan 31st, 2006, 10:39am Michael, So sorry to hear of this awful news! Sounds like the dog is supposed to sniff out drugs, but instead "spooks" easily and bites children. >:( Please give your niece our very best well wishes! Hope the injury heals quickly and remind her that not all dogs are mean! I was afraid of dogs for years after I got bitten (hardly even a scratch, really though - but it scared me!) - I stopped being afraid when my parents got our labrador puppy. :) Hugz to you and your family! Carrie :) |

Wrong. Most often the team will do demos on their own time. |

Maybe wrong. But often local police in efforts to rationalize ever growing budgets are being "encouraged" to spend greater amounts of time "promoting" what the resources are being used for. These dogs are expensive and the only way to rationalize is to get them out in the community doing "meet and greets". |

Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by unsolved1 on Jan 31st, 2006, 12:32pm Thanks for your support everyone. Cortney had a plastic surgeon put in 15 stitches in her cheek. She stayed home from school to rest today. It's all over the news in Louisville. More TV cameras are coming today. BTW, we meet the attorney at 3 today ! UNsolved |

True but sadly enough the departments pay very little towards the upkeep. They supply food and thats about it. It all falls on the handler to keep the dog properly. Theyt may lead you to belive that the Departments take care of these dogs but they dont. In some case not even medical. If the dog isn't adopted by the handler upon retirement they may euthenize. I hope Coutneys settlement is enough to put her through vet school. At least you can be a celebrity for awhile Courtney! |

Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by Charlie on Jan 31st, 2006, 3:31pm Sorry for this sad story. Hope she has no more problems. I'm with most of you. What a waste of time, money, energy and just plain misuse of resources. (of all kinds) What we couldn't do with the billions wasted on this stupid war on drugs election tool. I love dogs but one more incident and the dog should should be history; maybe less than one..... Charlie |

Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by BarbaraD on Jan 31st, 2006, 3:43pm If Courtney shows a "fear" of dogs after this, try what Lizzie says - get her a puppy so she'll get over the fear. That's what we had to do for my grandson. He was terrified of "big" dogs, but now we have Homer and he's growing with him and is not near as afraid of big dogs now. Kids bounce back, but sometimes need a prop to help them. Give Courtney lots of hugs. Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by JJA on Jan 31st, 2006, 3:46pm Your neice is making national news among drug law reformers. http://www.daregeneration.blogspot.com/ BTW it is described as a "DARE dog". This presentation was was part of the DARE program which is a well funded and ineffective program. If it's not a waste of police resources, it's a waste of federal tax money. Quote:

Unfortunate but true. The DARE Program was well intentioned and well thought out bit is just simply innefective. Many communities have scrapped the program. I've facilitated numerous K-9 demonstrations. The empahsis I've always experianced has been on how the dogs are trained and the demo is used as educational tool. Rarely have I witnessed a demo with interaction between the dogs and the spectators. These dogs are pretty high strung and even more so when they are working. The exception to that rule is the bloodhounds who wouldn't bite a hamburger and generally love kids. Allowing the interaction at Courtneys school was extremely poor judgement on the handler's part. Barb is right. Get her a puppy. |

Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by Trapp on Jan 31st, 2006, 9:56pm I'm so sorry to hear about your neice. I also train these types of dogs and I hate it when something like this happens. I hope she has a speedy recovery. Sheena |

Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by Gator on Feb 1st, 2006, 2:45am Sorry to hear about your niece, bro. I hope she recovers quickly both physically and emotionally. I supervised K-9 handlers of drug, patrol and bomb dogs for about 3 years. I spent many hours conducting specialty training with K-9 teams, including being a practice dummy with the wrap for attack training. I did quite a few public relations demonstrations as well. Like chewy said, most of those dogs are high strung Alpha types. They should not be allowed out around people, especially kids who like to touch and pet dogs, without being muzzled. |

Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by Jackie on Feb 1st, 2006, 7:10pm This is so pitiful......I'm really sorry your little niece was injured. An incident like this is uncalled-for and unnecessary...... VERY negligent on the part of the handler... >:( Speedy recovery to your niece. Jacks 8) |

Title: Re: Police dog attacks my neice Post by BlueMeanie on Feb 1st, 2006, 11:19pm A friend of mine has a little girl that was attacked by a bit bull over 2 years ago. It was not a pretty site. Fortunately the plastic surgery is hiding most of the scars. I really feel for your neice and hope she comes out of this o.k. Unbelievable that they would allow those dogs without muzzles that close to youngsters. :( |
